Anyone intrigued by the history, methodology and results of the research done in the quest for the historical Jesus should read Powell's study. In his opening chapter, Powell notes that interest in the historical Jesus began in the 1700s due to Reimarus's volume that declared Jesus to be a messiah only in a worldly, political sense. He then explains how later scholars have influenced the search for the historical Jesus. The heart of the book lies in Powell's "snapshots" of Jesus, a sampling of the diverse portraits of the historical Jesus and of the scholars who are engaged in contemporary research, including: Jesus as social prophet (Richard A. Horsley); Jesus as charismatic Jew (Geza Vermes); Jesus as magician (Morton Smith); Jesus as Jewish sage (Ben Witherington III); and Jesus as cynic philosopher (F. Gerald Downing). He then presents what he regards as the six key players in the current quest for the historical Jesus?the participants in the Jesus Seminar, John Dominic Crossan, Marcus J. Borg, E.P. Sanders, John P. Meier and N.T. Wright?and offers critiques of their methods and findings. Clear, scholarly, meaningful, and even devotional!

I couldn't get enough of this book. Powell is a wonderful writer, and he introduces us to the perspectives of Historical Jesus scholars of the last two centuries with absolute clarity and just the right details. I just had a lot of fun reading on the different scholarly views on who that ancient man of sorrows was. Powell seemingly has no axe to grind, seems completely competent to plough the terrain, and makes the whole trip worth it with the last two pages of the book....After this huge deluge of information about what Jesus did or did not say; after all of the guessing concerning Jesus message; after probing why Jesus has remained so controversial after 2000 years, Powell offers a tantalizing scenario concerning the very first Christian words ever penned on the last two pages (his only personal reflections in the book). I had to wipe the tears from my eyes after that.
This book is a 5 all the way. You won't be disappointed regardless of your view of who Jesus was (or is).

who do historians say that I am?

Who was Jesus of Nazareth? Today, few scholars doubt that Jesus actually existed, that he was a real historical figure. But exactly who or what was he? A raving madman? A prophet? A self-proclaimed Messiah? Or...?

This book, written by Mark Allan Powell (who is incidentally a Lutheran) doesn't give an answer to the question "who was Jesus". Rather, it describes the views of various scholars on the matter. Inevitably, there are many different views on Jesus within the scholarly community.

Powell begins by giving a short historical background. He describes how scholars during the 18th and 19th centuries attempted to cast Jesus in a "naturalist" mold. His miracles were really natural occurances, misunderstood by the superstitious disciples. The "kingdom of God" preached by Jesus was an earthly, political entity, not something supernatural and divine. And so on. The eschatological, apocalyptic and messianic elements of the Gospels were rejected as later ideas, and Jesus was transformed into a figure acceptable to 19th century agnostics or atheists. During the first half of the 20th century, Albert Schweitzer decisively challenged these ideas, "rediscovering" the eschatological ideas of Jesus, placing him once again in a firm 1st century Palestinian context. However, Schweitzer also believed that Jesus had failed in his mission, and that 20th century Christians must adopt an ultra-liberal, Social Gospel stance.

The main bulk of the book is devoted to contemporary scholars and their views of the historical Jesus. Powell does a good job in describing the various positions, the criticism levelled against them, and the often tricky methodological issues involved. For instance, how do we know which parts of the Gospels give the most trustworthy historical information about Jesus? How should apocryphal texts like "the Gospel of Thomas" be evaluated? What about the Talmud? Etc.

A particularly tricky criterion is the one called Dissimilarity. If a statement purported to be by Jesus is very different from 1st century Jewish conceptions, while also being potentially embarrasing to the early Church, it's usually deemed authentic. However, the Dissimilarity criterion gets problematic if taken to far. If the historical Jesus was neither "Jewish" nor "Christian", its difficult to explain why he recruited Jewish disciples who eventually founded the Christian Church! Dissimilarity risk turning Jesus into an inexplicable anomaly. In reality, there must have been at least some continuity between John the Baptist, Jesus and Paul. Why else would Jesus become a follower of John? And why else would Paul claim to act in Jesus name? Powell also points out another very common problem: those who attempt to reconstruct the "real" ideas of Jesus often end up with a Jesus whose ideas are similiar to their own! Leftist radicals end up with a leftist radical Jesus, Catholics with a Catholic Jesus, vegeterians with a vegetarian Jesus... Indeed, one of the things that made Schweitzer so remarkable was precisely that he came up with a Jesus he couldn't agree with.

The scholarly opinions described by Powell include those of John Dominic Crossan, Marcus J. Borg, E.P. Sanders, John P. Meier and N.T. Wright. Crossan and Borg are members of the Jesus Seminar and represent the "liberal" part of the spectrum, with Crossan speculating that Jesus was a kind of Cynic antinomian philosopher, more Hellenistic than Jewish, indeed, something of a 1st century hippie. By contrast, N.T. Wright openly defends the Biblical position, claiming that Jesus might very well have believed himself to be the God of Israel in the flesh. Of course, it's difficult to escape the suspiscion that Crossan is a hippie of sorts himself, while Wright is, of course, the bishop of Durham!

As already noted, the author of "Jesus as a figure in history" never answers that Question of Questions Jesus put to his disciples: "Who do you say that I am?". But at least, he has made it possible for the rest of us to contemplate the scholarly responses.

a clear explanation of a difficult and complex subject

Dr. Powell is head of the Historical Jesus section of the SBL. He not only is a New Testament scholar in his own right, he is also a respected colleague and friend of the Jesus Scholars he discusses. He not only has read their works, but he understands their positions from the inside.
In my experience, the study of the Historical Jesus is sometimes characterized by rhetoric, special pleading, and an unfruitful "us" vs. "them" attitude. While Powell is forthright about his own views when this is appropriate, he comes across as
surprisingly objective as he discusses the pros and cons of each position. This is aided by the fact that the Jesus scholars often disagree with each other - so he can just say "Wright would take issue with that", or "Crossan responds to this view
in this way."
Powell's writing style is refreshingly informal at times, and he obviously strives for clarity over the "scholar-speak" so often encountered. At the same time, he is obviously familiar with the technical concepts and not only throws the jargon around
but often explains it.
The book shows unusual restraint - Powell gives the reader room to formulate his/her own conclusions, while providing insight into both the issues and the scholars themselves.
I understand that this book is used in college courses as an introduction to the subject, and I can see why.
_Jesus As a Figure in History_ is a rare contribution: a clear explanation of a difficult and complex subject. I give it a 5.

His interest in compiler development lies more in code optimization and vectorization. Previously, he has authored a book on LLVM, titled LLVM Cookbook by Packt Publishing. Apart from compilers, Suyog is also interested in Linux Kernel Development. He has published a technical paper titled Secure Co-resident Virtualization in Multicore Systems by VM Pinning and Page Coloring at the IEEE Proceedings of the 2012 International Conference on Cloud Computing, Technologies, Applications, and Management at the Birla Institute of Technology, Dubai. He has earned a bachelor's degree in computer technology from the College of Engineering, Pune, India.

Functional Pottery; Form and Aesthetic in Pots of Purpose

I found Functional Pottery to be a pleasant surprise for the most part, although I was mildly disappointed by the more practical sections of the book. Roughly the first half of the book provides an interesting historical and cultural review of functional pottery, which went beyond what I had anticipated from the title and general description. A portion of the second half of the book focused on the mechanics of particular forms of functional pottery. This portion, which was my particular interest in buying the book, was a little less thorough and extensive than I had hoped. For the beginner/intermediate potter specifically interested in practical advice and detail regarding the mechanics of functional pottery forms, the material in the book, while useful, may not go far enough. I recommend this book as a general overview, keeping in mind that the scope of the book covers a broader range of topics than implied by its title, and that only sixty pages of the book are dedicated to the practical considerations and mechanics of designing and creating functional pottery.

Got me through it

I bought this and the Extra Class version. After 3 weeks of casual study I passed the Technician, General, and Extra in one setting. I copied and then went through the pool of test questions included in the back of each book with a highlighter. Blue for the questions I 100% knew, green for the questions that I got with a little intuition (guessing not allowed), and yellow for the questions I did not understand. Each question in the pool has the section and page number listed making it easy to refer back to the section for further study. I went through all of my "greens" and then the "yellows" reading the relevant sections. Using this process with a clean copy of the pool questions I got to mostly "blue" and a couple of "greens"...and easily passed the three test. I also took the practice tests on the ARRL and the AA9PW dot com web sites.

Helpful for the General class exam, but there are opportunities for improvement

The spiral version as it's a LOT easier to manage on the bus commute, where I've done most of my studying for the exam. I've supplemented practice with an iPad app that quizzes me on a random selection of 35 questions. After a few runs of the app, I've identified areas where I need to bone up and have done so with the book. Although this edition of the book is for the question bank that begins July 1st, the basic principles have not changed materially from the soon-to-expire exam. I'm pretty confident I'm going to pass the exam on Monday without a problem. On that metric -- helping me with the test -- this book is fine.

I am less enthusiastic about over-presentation of material that distracts from clarity of understanding. For example, in the front of the book (1-2, repeated half-size on 3-7) is a Frequency Allocation Chart (also available on their web site) with a diagram of the bands, frequencies and modes. Because it's the generic diagram, it includes a lot of superfluous information such as the restrictions for Novice and Advanced licenses -- both deprecated in 2000, as well as changes enacted a couple of years ago. As a result, the chart is dense and less useful than it could be in this setting. It would have been super helpful if they included ONLY the information pertinent to General privileges. With the extra room, they could add supplemental information relevant to several of the questions on the exam: power restrictions, sideband use, and relative position of data vs voice.

Excellent Text Book - Good Resource Book

Excellent technical book to use when studying for the General or as a good resource book to have on the shelf. I find this book provides information above and beyond what you might need to know for the test so this is a text book for the serious student that wants to do more than just pass the test. I do use the Gordon West book to condense studying for specific exams so it is a good companion book.

Great Book

This is a really fun story about Furious Pete and his beginnings as a competitive eater. He doesn’t just eat big, he eats healthy and it was really interesting to see how he took control of his illness, anorexia, and became famous on YouTube. A really fun book for anyone interested in healthy eating and dieting, and he is such a great persona that I loved learning more about what he has to say. Two thumbs up for this one.

I watch Furious Pete's YouTube videos and was really excited to see that he wrote a book. I originally bought it for my husband for Christmas, but ended up reading it before he could finish. Something to pass the time.

I gave this book four stars because the story was engaging and I got caught up in the characters of the dogs and fox in spite of myself. There were no surprises here. I will say that Mr. Adams has a wonderful imagination and conveys what he thinks these animals might experience. The book was a slow-go in parts, and the illustrations and maps added very little to the book. The plot was bad guys vs good guys and in that way there was no suspense. I have to admit, I cried at the end, which is out of character for me. Then I did some research about the writing of the book and found that the author actually wanted to have the book end differently. So in essence he caved in to outside pressures. Regardless, I'm glad I read it, though it was nowhere near as good as Watership Down.

Plague dogs highlights scientific animal testing from the point of view of animals.

It also brings up important lessons on loyalty, determination and love. This book is a must for young readers.

Dear Ken,
I would like to say thank you for your perfect sharing. I expect to come out this book before 2012 and I have been learn without guide line.
Once I read yours, I notice that you didn't explain how to collaborate Robot Structure with other structure related application as BIM basic, and CSi products.
So I hope, you will be come out for next Professional or advance reference book soon. I would like to advise to include above items for widely usage for structure designer or engineer.

Great book for learning Autodesk Robot

Very good book for beginners in Robot.
Telling a lot of hidden features and describing many advanced features that is impossible to learn in Robot's helpfile.
The book is pedagogic as well.
I will recommend it to both beginners and normal users and i hope that Ken Marsh will write a book for even more advanced users very soon.

About the Author

Bradley T. Erford, Ph.D., LCPC, NCC, LPC, LP, LSP, is a Past President of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and a professor in the school counseling program of the Education Specialties Department in the School of Education at Loyola University Maryland. He has authored or edited more than 30 books. His research specialization falls primarily in development and technical analysis of psycho-educational tests and outcomes research and has resulted in the publication of more than 60 refereed journal articles, more than 100 book chapters, and 15 published tests. He has received numerous awards for his scholarship and service to the counseling profession from ACA and the Association for Assessment and Research in Counseling (AARC), organizations within which he has held numerous leadership positions.

Succinct and Practical

[[VIDEOID:7a771538aa5783e6d1d9d92f3c7bdf26]] This is a succinct guide to implementing specific psychotherapeutic techniques. It targets anyone providing psychotherapy. This is absolutely a one-of-a- kind practical overview of particular counseling interventions.

The text is divided into nine sections, each focusing on a different theoretical approach:
1. Solution focused brief counseling
2. Adlerian or psychodynamic
3. Gestalt and psychodrama
4. Mindfulness
5. Humanistic-phenomenological
6. Cognitive-behavioral
7. Social learning
8. Behavioral approaches using positive reinforcement
9. Behavioral approaches using punishment

Each section includes separate chapters for each therapeutic technique. For example, the Mindfulness section includes chapters on guided imagery, deep breathing, and progressive muscle relaxation. The Adlerian or psychodynamic approach section includes chapters on I-messages, acting as if, splitting the soup, mutual storytelling, and paradoxical intention. Each technique is then broken down into (1) origins, (2) how to implement, (3) variations, (4) examples, and (5) usefulness and evaluation. The authors do an excellent job of keeping each chapter short and to the point. They provide example dialogue between patient and counselor and example implementation techniques.

I find this text an excellent supplement to a theoretical text like Sharf's Theories of Psychotherapy & Counseling: Concepts and Cases, 5th Edition. Pairing these two books together gives students a sense of both the theoretical and practical aspects of psychotherapy. I also think this book would work well for seasoned clinicians who want to brush up on some techniques and easily implement them into practice. This book is very simple to read and can be read cover to cover without difficulty.

Each short chapter is a technique with examples of how it can be used with client's. I love it and I am so happy to have found it before I started my second practicum. For a beginning counselor it is extremely helpful to have a tool kit such as this (and something that will be useful throughout my career until I have each permanently saved in my brain).
