About the Author

M. David Miller has been working in the field of assessment and evaluation for more than 25 years. He is a Professor in Research Methods and Evaluation at the University of Florida.  He is also the Director of the Collaborative Assessment and Program Evaluation Services, which conducts evaluation and assessments of public school programs and NSF grants at the UF.  As part of this work, he is also the Director of the University of Florida’s Quality Enhancement Plan, which is looking at ways to prepare undergraduates to compete in an international environment.  He has also been a co-Director of a state K-12 assessment program and was the data analyst for the Second International Mathematics Study.

 

 

Robert L. Linn is a Distinguished Professor emeritus of Education at the University of Colorado at Boulder.  He is a member of the National Academy of Education and Lifetime National associate of the National Academies.  He is a former President of the Division of Evaluation and Measurement of the American Psychological Association, former President of the National Council on Measurement in Education, former Vice President of the American Educational Research Association for the Division of Measurement and Research methodology, and former President of the American Educational Research Association.  He is widely published in educational measurement and has received several awards, including the ETS Award for Distinguished Service to Measurement, the E. L. Thorndike Award, the E. F. Lindquist Award, the National Council on Measurement in Education Career Award, and the American Educational Research Association Award for Distinguished Contributions to Educational Research.

Ugh, what tortured language, using as many words as possible to convey a straightforward concept. I am *not* a fan of this textbook! I've used much better textbooks that have similar information in some of my other grad program classes. Not a keeper on my reference shelf.

Why on earth doesn't the book work on my other devices??!!

The book is considered a classic. The 11th edition, content wise, is great. However, I am so upset that I can open this book ONLY through the Kindle app on my iPad. What is the publisher thinking? I told my professor and he is not considering the text for next semester. This will be a shame because the content is great.

A must-have for the gay studies enthusiast!

Beemyn has edited an anthology of works from emerging academics who are studying gay life outside of the white, vanilla, male mode. This anthology has great articles on gay black men, Asian lesbians, biracial female sadomasochists, etc. It is a very welcome edition to my gay studies collection. I find myself citing articles from this anthology all the time. I truly recommend this book. I think gay men and lesbians of color will truly appreciate it.

Overall very pleased with his purchased. I own 20+ soccer books and hundreds of hours of DVDs. The drills explained were not necessarily new to me but the way the book was organized was professional and attractive to myself as a coach. A great resource for improving passing, receiving, possession and decision-making. The drawings and instructions are clear, the progressions are helpful and the questions and challenges for players ensure specific attention to detail and improvement. I tried several exercises from the book with my team and thanks to the variety, players were motivated and engaged.

About the Author
KHANG LE
Khang Le was born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1981. When he was ten, his family moved to Los Angeles, California, and Le immersed himself in the world of comic books. During high school, a friend introduced him to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. At the same time, The Art of Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace came out, and making a living as a concept artist for the entertainment industry become Le's aspiration. In 2000, he got accepted to Art Center, where he had the opportunity to refine his skills to freelance for various entertainment mediums, including games, movies, music videos, and publishing. He has recently graduated and is currently traveling the world and considering all of his professional options.

FELIX YOON
Felix Yoon was born in Pennsylvania in 1982, where he spent his childhood, and later relocated to South Korea. He moved to California as he entered high school. It wasn't until senior year when Yoon decided to take art seriously as a possible occupation. After high school he entered Art Center College of Design, where he graduated with honors with a BFA in illustration. He started working as a concept artist for video games and now works as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation.

MIKE YAMADA
Michael Yamada was born and raised in Pasadena, California. Originally intending to be a graphic designer, Yamada attended a local community college and changed his course of study after discovering a book of Star Wars production art. He transferred to Art Center College of Design where in 2003 he graduated with honors with a BS degree in product design with a emphasis on entertainment design. He has spent the year after his graduation employed as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation, and working on a variety of freelance projects. He also teaches at Otis College of Art and Design.

Inspiration for my senior project

I love this book because
(a) it depicts a fantastic journey of imagination and artistic exploration,
(b) it has a sense of adventure about it,
(c) these young artists show such mind-blowing talent in the pages of this book,
(d) and it inspired me to tackle my own concept art project while I'm still in college.

As I go through my own creative process, I've often found myself referring to this book to see how they tackle the various challenges of designing unique and compelling characters, environments, and props. The commentary they make on each step of the process is just as valuable as their sketches and finished paintings because it gives insight into their mindset as they encountered problems along the way, and how they creatively overcame them. Highly recommended to all students of concept art.

Absolutely Wonderful.

Absolutely gorgeous and wonderful, the book is a fantastic addition to any library. Being a fan of concept art and Grimm tales, I was stoked to get my hands on it, and once I'd seen it in a teacher's collection--I absolutely had to own it myself.

It came quickly and in wonderful condition, and the art inside was just as beautiful as I had remembered! I was more than happy to put it on my bookshelf.

Beautiful, Imaginative, Inspirational

I bought this book originally because it sounded interesting: three artists conceptualizing the same fairytale. What I got was a book FILLED with sketches (which I love, as an artist myself). These three gentlemen walk us through their creative process visually, so you can see how blocking out character shapes turns into detailed character design with color, attitude, and even some humor. I flip through this book regularly (have had it now for two years), and I'll see a headdress here, a sword there, a detail on a gown, and it gives me new ideas for my own characters.

Of the MANY books that claim to be concept art, The Skillful Huntsman is, by far, the best I've found. Love love love.

I don't like it because ...

I bought this book with great hope. I have spent the past 12 odd years of my career working on various networking protocols. But, I had never worked on network management systems. I figured I could use a good book about network management. Looking at the TOC and the author's info (the author teaches at GaTech), I figured I wouldn't go wrong if I read this book.

The author definitely covers a lot of ground. The emphasis is squarely on SNMP based systems. The author also has some decent discussion about EMS/NMS, event-correlation, commercial and open-source management systems, etc.

So, why am I giving it 2*-s? I didn't like the book because it is very hard to read. The sentences are very difficult to read and understand. You have to make a big effort to figure out what the author is saying and even then, it's not easy. I am hoping the author and the editors simplify the language of the book and update some of the content in the next edition. So, my suggestion would be: wait till the next edition if you can, else, be ready to put in a lot of time into reading this book.

For folks serious about learning network security

I purchased this book as part of the required reading for an Information Security class at UCLA. From the start the book was full of very technical and detailed information. Having little practical network experience, my first reading focused on grasping the low-hanging fruit. As I read the book a second and third time I picked up some serious knowledge. It seemed like everytime I re-read a chapter there was more there to glean. I'm now studying for the CISSP and CISA. My initial cold self-assessments returned scores in the 80%-100% range. That's without CISSP/CISA-specific studying. I attribute most of that knowledge to this book. This was money well spent!
