Fit For Purpose

This is what the title says - for engineering students. It is not really useful for the practicing aircraft structural analyst. The mathematics presented is considerably more involved than is presented in most other airframe analysis texts, with empahsis on how stress formulae are derived. A bit over the top if all you want is to know how to analyse a practical problem, but ideal for the student who needs to know the foundations of analysis. A little bit annoying how equations are quoted by number, forcing the reader to continuously return to previous chapters.

The 4th edition of this book complete and improve the already good level of the 3rd edition. It is probably one the best book dedicated to the study of the aircraft structures for aerospace engineering student.

As an Aeronautical Engineering student, using this book has been great. Not the easiest reading I've come by, but the text is very clear and the subjects are organized in an intuitive manner, making it a good reference for my courses.

A must for any fan of The Legend of Korra

If you are a fan of The Legend of Korra, this collection of posters is a must for anyone who is a fan of our girl from the Southern Water tribe, you won't be disappointed.

The book is well printed on thick stock paper, and the artwork is printed individually/one side only, so you will not have to choose which side of the art to display, and features concept art from all four books as well as ancillary media used to promote the show.

For example, if you were unable to attend any of the large comic conventions such as the New York ComicCon, or the queen mother, San Diego ComiCon, there are a few reproductions of posters from those venues- NYCC, featured on the cover of the poster book itself, as well as the poster from book three featuring the Red Lotus characters, the Avatar, and two of the new airbenders from Earth Kingdom, and there is even a print of the first poster Nickelodeon issued in 2012 before the show even aired featuring Korra looking over her adopted home, Republic City.

There are a few prints in the book that aren't so spectacular, but that is just my taste, as I wanted to see more characters in print, rather than a large background painting of the banyan grove tree standing proudly of the swamp, or wide shots of Zaofu. I wish that the book included the poster "New Friends" that featured the new Team Avatar, or Hiroshi Sato's photo of he posed with his wife Yasuko, and daughter Asami when they were a whole family untouched by a horrid act of violence.

Hopefully, the lack of this artwork only means that we will be treated to the opportunity to purchase a second, or perhaps even third collection of Legend Of Korra art, but for now the lack of those images are made up for by the presence of two extremely rare, and special works, Korra's spirit parade, which was a limited edition print limited to only a few hundred copies, and the rendering of the post series image painted by Brian Konietzko, which the fandom has dubbed "Turtleduck Date Night" featuring the endgame romantic pairing, which was also a limited edition offering.

I can't say that I absolutely love each inclusion in the book, Meelo's self-portrait for example, but the book isn't meant to cater to everyone's tastes, but to serve as a sampler for everyone to have an opportunity to enjoy a quality image of material that they may not be able to find because it wasn't issued for widespread ownership, or acquire the originals of, because of the ballooning collector's market for this show's memorabilia.

In short, this is a high quality collection of artwork from this show that everyone who is a fan, will be able to draw some enjoyment from in one form or another.

I bought two of them, and I believe I might have to purchase another, y'know, just to be safe.

BEAUTIFUL!! The art and the pages it's printed on are just gorgeous and high quality. The other wonderful thing is that the pages aren't double sided like most poster books! Couldn't be happier :)

Alton Brown used to direct TV commercials and cook on the side. Then he got the crazy idea to go to culinary school and reinvent the food show. The result: Good Eats, which kept Brown gainfully employed for fifteen years and earned him a Peabody Award. Along the way he also hosted Iron Chef America and Feasting on Asphalt and wrote seven books in his spare time. In 2013 he launched a live culinary variety show called The Edible Inevitable tour, which played to sold out theaters across the United States. In the spring of 2016, Brown’s new live show, Eat Your Science, toured forty U.S. cities. Brown also hosts the insanely popular Cutthroat Kitchen on Food Network.

An evolution from Good Eats (or just a departure, depending on your perspective)

One of the things that I've always appreciated about Alton Brown is that he takes the time not just to explain the "how" of cooking, but also the "why". I've always enjoyed AB's sense of humor, pop culture references, and food science nerdism. That said, I kinda felt I had moved on in the gap between the Good Eats books and this.

With EveryDayCook (EDC going forward), AB shows that he has moved on as well. While EDC still contains all the cleverness and food geek knowledge of his previous works, there has been a clear evolution as he has learned more over the years -- both from personal and dietary experience and from techniques he no doubt picked up hosting Iron Chef America. You will find in EDC certain ingredients, tools and methods that may be new to you. For the most part, that's a good thing. While AB certainly doesn't go full-on modernist cuisine, he definitely dips his toe in the pool with such things as the use of a whipping siphon and the use of metric measurements.

Which brings me to one of the issues people may have with this book. In a number of recipes, AB uses metric measurements (which will bother some "traditional" home cooks). In some recipes, he'll use a combination of measurements: quantity (3 eggs), volume (1 cup of milk), and weight (55g clarified butter). If weight is critical to the success of a recipe, then you're going to have to grab that digital scale - ideally accurate to a tenth of a gram. If it's not going to impact the recipe, AB will give you the measurement in the easiest and most convenient way. It sure would have been nice, though, for him to give approximate quantities or volume equivalents when he provides metric weights. When making the apple spice bundt cake, for example, I would have known to have 3 sticks of butter at room temperature to hit the required 336 grams.

Another thing AB does in EDC that may strike some as odd, but after you give it a moment of thought you'll recognize the sense to it, is that he organizes the book in terms of what time of day you'll be eating - breakfast, lunch, dinner, and the times in between. Rather than a section on pork or poultry, he thinks the way most of us do, i.e. "what should we have for dinner?" Furthermore, most of the recipes are not overly complex. AB wants this to be a book you can use any (or every) day. Many times he succeeds; a number of times he does not.

There are some issues I have with these recipes and the way they are presented. Many of them are simply NOT "everyday" recipes. The process for the amaranth wafers took 4 hours from start to finish (more on that below in the "update"). Sadly, the recipes do not list "total time" and "active time" in minutes, so it's hard to be sure of what kind of commitment you're looking at when you start. The recipes are written in paragraph form, with no additional spacing between steps or bolding of the step number, so they sort of blend together into a mass of text. It's almost like AB transcribed his hand-written notes into this cookbook.

This brings me to the photography in EDC, which is a double edged sword. It's wonderful, copious, and pretty amazing that it was all done with a smartphone. Unfortunately, a great many recipes are printed on top of these photos, making the recipes even more difficult to read.

Ultimately, those hoping for Good Eats Volume 4 are going to find themselves wondering "what happened to the Alton I thought I knew?" Those of us who are curious about how AB has personally evolved as a cook over the last handful of years will likely enjoy this book a great deal.

On-Going Updates (Oct 29, 2016): I'll continue to update this review as I work through the recipes, providing my thoughts on those I find note-worthy.

- Amaranth Wafers: Ever have a food that you can't tell if you like or not (you'll say "this tastes interesting"), but then can't stop eating it? That's amaranth wafers. While I'm glad I made these, this is NOT an everyday recipe. You will need to candy some orange peel for this recipe (this takes a while and yields enough for 2 batches of these cookies), and AB's instructions for removing the orange rind strike me as the most difficult way to do it -- at least for this recipe. Further, following the recipe left me with a "batter" that did not stick together at all. Adding an additional egg and 2TBs of butter yielded a batter that held together wonderfully. The first time you make this recipe, expect it to take about 4 hours. At least half of that is "active" time.

- Barley Water: I include this only because it is one of the recipes that AB promotes in one of his recent podcasts. As I drank it, I thought "this reminds me of a home remedy for irregularity". It is essentially a thick, somewhat bland lemonade. Yet strangely, after my first glass, I wanted more. Perhaps my body just craves fiber. Also, I'm not sure why AB recommends a 3 quart pitcher when the yield is around a quart and a half.

- Cold Brewed Coffee (edited 10/29/2016): Wonderful, but if you like iced coffee, just get a Toddy Cold Brew System. It will take you about the same amount of time to brew up an entire pitcher of iced coffee concentrate as it does to make a serving from AB's recipe.

- Scrambled Eggs 3.0: Truly an "everyday" recipe. Super fast, super easy, super yummy. I don't prefer them to Ruhlman's or Blumenthal's double boiler scrambled eggs, but these take a fraction of the time and are still fantastic. This really felt like a "Good Eats" recipe, and I mean that as high praise.

- Apple Spice Bundt Cake: Extraordinary! The flavor of this cake almost defies description. Who'd have thought that you could use rosemary in a cake? The spices blend together so subtly that it would take a sophisticated palate to recognize them all. I thought that a cake that used 3 sticks of butter would have been a little more moist. The next time I make it, I think I'll throw in a little macadamia nut oil. And maybe boost the rum content of the frosting. Also, this is not really an "everyday" recipe, but definitely a great weekend recipe. Between grinding all of our spices, dicing and shredding apple and chopping ginger and pecan, just getting the ingredients prepped took over 30 minutes. But man, oh man, it was worth it.

- Garam Marsalmon Steaks: I have a confession -- I HATE salmon. I pretty much would need to be starving to eat salmon. And yet I found this recipe very edible. I "grilled" these inside on cast iron rather than on a grill, and my wife (who likes salmon) absolutely loved these. The recipe recommends applying the spice blend liberally. I held back a bit and would say that the recipe is right -- the spice blend will not overpower the fish, even if applied like a rub. On cast iron, it forms a wonderful crust. This recipe was very easy and definitely qualifies as "everyday".

- Chicken Parmesan Balls and Weekday Spaghetti: I group these together because of the significant overlap between the recipes (the herb oil and sauce are the same). If you have already prepared the herb oil, both of these become "everyday" recipes (the spaghetti more so). I honestly found the spaghetti sauce a little under-powered, flavor-wise. It tasted "fresh" and "authentic", but I just didn't get the herbal punch from the oil that I had hoped for. Don't be afraid of using two anchovies in the sauce -- I promise that it won't taste fishy. The CPBs were very good, though I think they would be even better formed into patties (more surface area to crust up the panko/parmesan) and made into sandwiches. I also confess that I topped this meal with triple the recommended mozzarella (see the pic), but hey, I'm from Wisconsin.

- "The Last Pizza Dough I'll Ever Need" - Those are AB's words, not mine. While it won't be the last dough I ever need, it certainly makes for an excellent pizza crust. AB has created a recipe that is extremely easy to make, very easy to handle and shape, and achieves the magical crust attributes of being both crispy and chewy. The crust is crisp enough that it doesn't buckle under the weight of ingredients, yet still retains a very satisfying chew. I've made better tasting pizza crust (typically with 00-Antimo Caputo flour) but not by much, and it wasn't as simple as this. This recipe definitely falls under the category of "everyday" assuming you spent 10 minutes the prior day prepping the dough. Be aware that the crust on this recipe goes from "almost done" to "burned" very rapidly. Keep an eye on it.

If you love to make great food, you need this book!

I love Alton Brown's style. And he has loaded his new book with nothing but! Well laid out, easy to follow recipes. And in reading through most of these I find that at the point where I start to think to myself "hmm, I wonder why he would use (insert ingredient or utensil or cooking method here)" sure enough, AB provides an explanation. This is what I love about the way he teaches his cooking. It is what originally made me a fan of the Good Eats TV show. Though I always used to say that Good Eats was the Peewee's Playhouse of cooking shows, so there is a fun side of it too!
This book is complete with detailed sections on his personal favorite pantry items, utensils, methods and bar stock. I've tried a few of the recipes already, and family and friends (and myself) get dazzled every time! This is a book I would recommend to anyone who loves to cook, not only for the good food you get, but as a way to relax, and enjoy a little creativity... that you can share.. and eat!

Another Great Alton Tome

I think I own every book Alton's written, and while I don't always try every recipe, I still enjoy reading them (although his brining turkey is now a family tradition every Thanksgiving). That said, I think this book is going to change that "don't always try every recipe" formula. There's a LOT of great ideas in this book I'm looking forward to dirtying up the kitchen attempting to make. And, as usual, it's still a fun read even if you never pick up a single spatula.

I really love this book

Speaking a language without using idioms and expressions is neither expressive nor full in meaning. Amy does a great job writing this book because it teaches us the idioms we need for daily life situations. Each lesson presents good stories and the associated idioms and expressions that go with them. Language lens is a grammar refresher and expression practice followed by quizzes all do a good job to practice what we learned. The audio CD that comes with the book helps the reader with the pronunciation and it can be played over and over again at reader's convenience.

I love this book (and the rest in the series). It provides easy to understand context for each idiom discussed. Plus, it's good for classroom use, since students can act out and practice using the idioms in a practical way.

Great questions that lead to very deep conversations

Although I'm already very happily married, my wife and I have found this book to be incredibly stimulating. She bought a copy on impulse for a friend who's getting married, but after skimming through it, we ended up keeping a copy for ourselves and buying another for our friend. We haven't finished it yet (not by a long shot), but we have found the process of answering the questions very insightful and provocative. We have discovered things about each other that might have taken years to find out. We have had some incredibly deep and interesting (and sometimes quite difficult) conversations that have lead us to whole new levels of understanding about each other. I'm generally not a big "self help" guy, and I was definitely skeptical when she started reading the questions to me, but it really has been a fun and helpful (albeit also a little scary sometimes) process. I recommend this book highly and not just for people who are contemplating getting married. I think it's an excellent book for any two people who are involved in a committed relationship and who want to understand each other better and perhaps take their relationship to a deeper, more meaningful level.

Great tool for couples!

I have seen some great success with this book in my personal relationship and highly reccomend it to others! I am currently in a long distance relationship in which my partner live 730 miles away. We had come to the point in our relationship where we had been discussing marriage and the possibility of me moving to be with him and his son. Uprooting my life has been a difficult pill to swallow and I wanted to make sure I was making the right choice before making such a move. I purchased this book so we might cover those make or break relationship moments before actually making the move and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. My partner was not only more than willing to participate, but excited as well! I was thrilled at his enthusiasm as well as at his answers! We were able to have some riveting conversations on those tough relationship questions and I currently making moves to relocate!

best for every couple

I disagree with previous writers who say the questions are childish, or for people with a short engagement. We had a long engagement, and found this book to be quite stimulating. I will agree that some of the questions you hopefully have talked about before becoming engaged, but others we hadn't thought of.
Also, the book is supposed to spur discussion, contemplation, and conversation, and the questions are not supposed to elicit just at one sentence answer. Developing good communication is a must for any marriage, and this book is great at sparking discussion and debate. It is nice that it has questions like "What do you think a father is supposed to do?" as the answer to these can vary greatly from person to person. If you discuss these types of questions before even getting married, you will be able to have realistic expectations of your future spouse, knowing better his/her beliefs and expectations of you too. The point of this book is to find out if there are huge discrepancies in your backgrounds, morals and values, so that you can work through them before they become an issue, and destroy your relationship.

The thing I liked best about this book, is that while reading it, in answering a question, we would often get into conversation about things that were related, but not necessarily asked in the book.

I think this book is great for married couples, as well as engaged couples.

Passionate medieval romances with a Viking touch!

I really enjoyed The Rover Betrayed, the third novel of Anna Markland's Viking Roots Medieval Romance Saga! I loved her previous stories The Rover Bold and The Rover Defiant, they were amazing and captivating! This time, it's the love story of Magnus, the son of Bryk from her first story. Magnus, a Viking, is the heir of his father's title and lands, also, a young widow with two young daughters Aleksandra and Brynhild. It pains him to leave his family, but he has to join his men in Normandy. Meanwhile, Judith, a Flemish noblewoman, is betrothed to a man she finds so strange, even is manners lack virility, she has no choice in the matter of this alliance of marriage. She could not understand why her brother, would do that to her! But destiny has other plans for Magnus and Judith! One day, the life will reunite them and embark them on a wild Viking adventure. Will he become her protector? Will he trust his enemy's sister? I am sure that you will again enjoy Anna Markland's beautiful saga!

Anna Markland has done it again! I loved her first novel The Rover Bold, which was the passionate love story of Bryk, a Viking warrior and Cathryn. Her new novel The Rover Defiant is also a well written love story of Torstein and Sonja. We meet again Bryk, who has become a mentor to Torstein, who is now a free man. Sonja is the daughter of noble man, she should marry and have children, but she doesn't like babies too much. As soon as she meets him, she becomes intrigued with him, but can she love this man, who is below her station? Will, this man, once a slave, offer his love and catch her heart? What will happen next? It's a beautiful novel filled with passion and adventure.

I love Viking adventures, I find them captivating and refreshing! Anna Markland's book The Rover Bold was so amazing, that I read it in one shot and could not put it down. We always imagined that the viking men were wild and cold , but THE ROVER BOLD is the story of one of these Viking warriors, who had a soft, sensitive heart and a sense of justice. I, was really touched, by the beautiful story of these two characters from different worlds who managed to understand each other by kindness, tenderness and finally fall in love. Beautiful sensual chemistry between Bryk, a Viking warrior and Cathryn, a brave woman! Anna Markland, is a talented storyteller and a very descriptive writer, this is her first book in her new series Viking Roots Medieval romance Saga. The story starts as Bryk, leaves Norway, along with his chieftain Hrolf and his army, his brother Alfred, and friends, to find a better place to live in peace. As for Cathryn, she had been left at a convent, when she was a newborn, and been raised to become a nun. Their worlds will collide and they will embark on a beautiful journey filled with love, danger and adventure. As soon as, they met, it was love at first sight, he will become her protector and she will become his woman to fulfill his destiny! I loved the cover of this book! This is my first book by this author and will surely watch for her next one THE ROVER DEFIANT, which will be Torstein's story. I loved her secondary characters Javune, Torstein, Kaia, Krolf, Alfred and Poppa. I strongly recommend The Rover Bold.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this series. My favorite is Bryk and Carolyn. Along with the romance, is the history. Really liked that she gave you fact and fiction at the end.

About the Author
It all started with a tickle. Roger Hargreaves' son Adam asked him what a tickle looked like. In response, Roger drew a small orange man with extraordinarily long arms that could reach anywhere and tickle anyone. The idea that a tickle could be a character in its own right sparked an idea in Roger's mind. Roger was a successful copywriter but he wanted to do something that would enable him to work from home and spend more time with his four children. He wondered if he could make a living writing and illustrating children's books so he wrote the first Mr Men titles: Mr Tickle, Mr Greedy, Mr Happy, Mr Nosey, Mr Sneeze and Mr Bump. The books were an instant hit and Roger went on to create many more Mr Men and Little Miss characters. What Roger really wanted was to make children laugh. Mr Silly was his favourite Mr Men story and, according to his family, encapsulates his humour most closely. Sadly Roger passed away in 1988, but his son Adam took over the series, introducing new characters and exciting new adventures. Roger once said, 'I feel very happy to think that when the Mr Men and Little Misses are 100 years old, their readers will always be five.'

Who are Mr. Busy and Mr. Bustle?!

Mr. Lazy lives in Sleepyland where everyone and everything is lazy. Even the trees do not stand tall! I do agree a little with another reviewer on the point that this book appears not to have a message. It is very different from many of the other Mr. Men books in the fact that the character, Mr. Lazy in this case, does NOT get cured of his bad habit. He is as lazy in the beginning as he is in the end.

HOWEVER I think children can understand the fact that being lazy is not a good thing and as they read this story they will see, through his dream, that his life could be much more productive if he was not lazy and the dream is not going away even though he has woken up from it once!

As a family, we love all the Mr. Men books including this one.
