About the Author


Beverly Derewianka is Professor of Language Education at the University of Wollongong, where she is Director of the Centre for Research in Language and Literacy. Following several years teaching in primary and secondary schools, she became a teacher educator in the fields of TESOL and literacy education.

Pauline Jones is Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Wollongong. Pauline teaches in the areas of language, literacy and TESOL in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Before moving into teacher education in 1995, she worked as a language curriculum consultant, ESL and classroom teacher and a community development worker in underprivileged urban environments.

A father and his four children--a toddler, a preschool boy and two older girls--go on the traditional bear hunt based on the old camp chant: "We're going to catch a big one. / What a beautiful day! / We're not scared. / Oh-oh! Grass! / Long, wavy grass. / We can't go over it. / We can't go under it. / Oh, no! / We've got to go through it!" The family skids down a grassy slope, swishes across a river, sludges through mud and, of course, finally sees the bear, who chases them all back to their home. It's a fantastic journey--was it real or imagined?--with the family's actions (and interaction) adding to the trip a goodnatured, jolly mood. The design of the oversized volume alternates black-and-white drawings with gorgeous full-color watercolor paintings, which Oxenbury uses to wonderful effect. Readers accustomed to her board books will find a different style here, of puddled colors and sweeps of light and shadow. The scale of the pictures and the ease with which the text can be shouted aloud make this ideal for families or groups to share. Ages 4-9.

PreSchool-K-- From England comes this refreshing interpretation of an old camp hand-rhyme presented in large picture-book format. The setting is the beach and its environs. The cast: five hunters (a man and four children) and a dog, all of whom stalk the furry beast through coastal landscapes, oozy mud, an unlikely snowstorm, and finally, into the cave where they meet the object of their search. And, just as in the old tale, they reverse their steps and, in this version, end up in bed under the covers, vowing never to go on a bear hunt again. The beautiful pastel watercolor paintings that fill the huge pages alternate with soft-textured charcoal sketches. The most impressive of the black, white, and gray drawings is the full-spread storm as it approaches. The final "reverse" scenes are small blocks, three to a page in rapid succession, in sync with the rushed pace of the text. Even the endpapers lend themselves to the mood of the tale. In contrast to the sunny beach featured at the front, a lonely bear walks the beach in the moonlight at the back of the book. The characters' faces are round and filled with expression. The rhyme is printed in a large, almost calligraphic typeface that leaps off the page, alive in onomatopoeic expression ("squelch squerch!" and "Hoooo woooo!") and reassurance for young listeners ("We're not scared"). This version adds vitality to Sivulich's more traditional I'm Going on a Bear Hunt (Dutton, 1973; o.p.). Can't go over it

Glancing at the cover of Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury's, "We're Going On a Bear Hunt", I thought something along the lines of, "Hrmph. I bet they watered it down and made it syrupy. There's no way this kind of kid's book (in which a father and his four children of different hair colors go hunting for a bear) is going to actually end with the family finding the bear and getting chased back to their house". Well, you can just color me wrong all over. Not only is the book faithful to the original song, but it's a hoot to boot. The words are those old familiar ones we all love so well, and the pictures are a high-stepping romp complete with adventure, daring, and danger. Everything, in fact, that a good picture book could hope to be.
If you've ever heard the song "We're Going On a Bear Hunt" then you know the way the story goes. A father and his rambunctious youngsters are setting out to locate one bear. They're not actually on a hunt in terms of carrying guns or anything of that sort. In fact, these people haven't anything with them but one another and the clothes on their backs. With their border collie along with they successfully cross the tall wavy grass (swishy swashy), ford the deep cold river (splash splosh), tromp through the ooey-gooey mud (squelch squerch), wander through the deep dark forest (stumble trip!), run through a whirling snowstorm (Hoooo woooo), and at last enter a deep dark cave (tiptoe). It's the dog that sees the malicious bear first and the brave troop run back over every place they'd been before to escape. In a moment of frenzied activity they enter their house only to discover that they've forgotten to shut the door. At the last minute they get it closed (angry bear safely outside now) and everyone crawls into bed and under the covers. The final shot in the book is one of the bear as he tromps solemly homeward again.
This is quite an exciting book. Author Michael Rosen has captured the enjoyable sounds of the story quite well, and the high tension towards the end is just delightfully scary enough for the youngsters. But it is illustrator Helen Oxenbury that really lets this puppy shine. She has the ability to create scenes in which characters are interacting with one another against huge evocative backgrounds. I'm very partial to a scene in which the family is joyfully running through the tall grasses, dotted occasionally with deep red poppies. The sky is a blue one, filled with light puffy clouds and in the distance a flock of birds travels up and away. Admittedly, I love a good pastoral illustration, but this kind of care for illustrations is visible in all Oxenbury's color pictures (each appearing on every other page). If you're at all familiar with Helen Oxenbury then you'll find numerous scenes in this story that remind you of her other books. The baby found here looks like nothing so much as a clothed version of the infant in, "Big Mama Makes the World". The muddy squelchy vista in another picture is reminiscent of the barnyard takeover attempt in, "Farmer Duck". She knows how to pick `em, Helen Oxenbury does.
Will kids be scared by a family chased by a bear? Pleasantly so, I believe. The shot of the bear walking home is enough to convince even the worry-wartiest of children that the family is not going to be eaten in the near future. All in all, this is just another one of those great picture books that fill the world. It reads aloud very well, so if you need a book to present to a large group, I've found the perfect match for you. If you like high adventure and a good tale, "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" delivers both in spades. A wonderful addition to any storytime collection.

One of the best choices out there

This is one of the first books my son responded to. I could read it to him and get him to say Uh Oh at the proper point. Months later he was able to add Oh No at the proper point. A book like this, with fun noises, great prepositional phrases, interesting drawings, a funny storyline, an exciting ending, and a repetitive reading sequence, really help children to remember what's going on. A kid who can remember a story can eventually learn to tell you that story, and sometimes even do so long before they're truly reading and decoding the words.

The board book format will always be lauded in our household. We like the durability and compactness of the books. The babies can easily turn the pages, the books withstand being thrown (hey, it happens) and stepped on, and the pages can be gnawed on without too much harm.

One of our favorites!

We love this book! As a parent of two toddlers, I have read a lot of children's books and this is one of my favorites! It is so fun to read and easy for the kids to memorize so they can "read" along. It's also really fun to act out the story, if you're feeling creative. The board book is very sturdy and we haven't had issues yet with durability. I am very pleased with this book and we've even purchased it again as a gift.

The extreme nature of today’s climate events, Ghosh asserts, make them peculiarly resistant to contemporary modes of thinking and imagining. This is particularly true of serious literary fiction: hundred-year storms and freakish tornadoes simply feel too improbable for the novel; they are automatically consigned to other genres. In the writing of history, too, the climate crisis has sometimes led to gross simplifications; Ghosh shows that the history of the carbon economy is a tangled global story with many contradictory and counterintuitive elements.

Ghosh ends by suggesting that politics, much like literature, has become a matter of personal moral reckoning rather than an arena of collective action. But to limit fiction and politics to individual moral adventure comes at a great cost. The climate crisis asks us to imagine other forms of human existence—a task to which fiction, Ghosh argues, is the best suited of all cultural forms. His book serves as a great writer’s summons to confront the most urgent task of our time.

An excellent, informed, wide-ranging analysis of what the arts might do in the service of communicating climate change. Ghosh's three part structure ("Stories," "History," "Politics") allows him to cover a remarkable breadth of social conditions which have left us unprepared and perhaps unable to face the climate challenge. Especially pointed in its description of what it sees as the challenges for Asia, and for South Asia specifically, in gearing up for this new era already upon us.

Ghosh's inquiry into the uncanny reality of the Anthropocene reveals connections between colonialism, capitalism, carbon politics, and rising oceans that really have been "unthinkable" in American and European non-fiction. While I would have preferred that Ghosh acknowledge the value of science fiction writing on climate change, I believe this book is necessary reading for anyone engaged in untangling the patterns of thought and action with which we are collectively enacting mass extinction.

Faulty Research

While much of this book brilliantly exposes the problem we have with coming to grips with climate change--in many different types of narratives, such as historically and politically--the one glaring error is Ghosh's assumption that artists and authors aren't properly dealing with climate change in their works. This is so very untrue. I work with, and have worked with, climate change authors for over three years now; some very notable, some just starting out but still producing legitimately life-changing novels--if media paid attention. Maybe because I actively research and talk with authors and read these novels and short stories, I am more aware of what's actually happening--but then that would point to poor research in this area on Ghosh's end.

I agree that climate change in fiction perhaps shouldn't have one particular genre--that it's the story that counts, despite the newer genres readily trying to wrap their hands around global warming (Anthropocene fiction, climate fiction, solarpunk) and the older genres still doing the job (science fiction, literary fiction, speculative fiction, weird fiction).

That brings me to another point, that there does exist the assumption in Ghosh's book that literary fiction is the only fiction that matters when it comes to climate change.

Shouldn't this movement be readily open to all readers and writers, regardless of what genre the work is in? Genre fiction and literary fiction may be miles apart, yet many times the lines are blurry. No reason to be elitist about genres and their potential impacts, especially when global warming, as a huge crazy reality that everyone finds difficult to grasp and talk about, would seemingly call for a tolerance globally to discuss and immerse artistically in whatever way (journalism, art, fiction, etc.) one can. This is not an issue reserved for only a few people.

Real world "how-to" that works

No other info I have ever obtained has so profoundly improved my ability to plan, manage, and deliver work in both my career and home life. It (rightfully) almost totally ignores software p.m. applications and instead informs and instructs on the key factors in successful project management- estimating,organizing/planning,tracking,resource allocation, and the human factors. Simple and universal concepts and approaches that work! If you just want to play with cool looking p.m. software this book is not for you. If you need to learn the principals and techniques of successful project management, you can't do better than this book!

This book was a required textbook for a project management class I took online at Berkeley. I found the information, templates, and exercises very helpful in starting my path as a project manager.

I would recommend this book to those wanting to get the basics in project management, but remember that it is written as a textbook.

This is NOT a good book for the majority of test takers (or teachers)

This is NOT a good book for the majority of test takers (or teachers). As a GRE writing teacher, I was anticipating some different approaches to teaching.

Imagine my shock to discover that the book has not even been proofread, and is chock-full of basic English errors that a native speaker could not have made. Checking Wikipedia, the reason became obvious - the author is not a native speaker (and obviously chose not to pay one to check for the ridiculous amount of errors throughout the book.

Errors aside, the "model" essays would NOT get a great score - many of them suffer from faulty logic, or in the argument essays, do not even touch on some of the most glaring fallacies. Not working for ETS, so it's not really possible to pass judgment on them, but from the available scored samples, they seem mostly in the 4-4.5 range. They are significantly shorter than the high-scoring essays provided by ETS, and they break many common rules of academic English, such as not using emotional language (the essays are rife with exclamation marks and extreme language), all of which the author warns against in the preliminary chapters.

Still, it would be unfair to throw out the baby with the bathwater. There are so few books on the GRE essay on the market, that even one so flawed can still serve as a resource for some ideas, as long as readers are aware that they should not take what is written within as gospel.

I'm still amazed that a 2nd edition could be so full of obvious grammatical mistakes. This just goes to show that self-publishing can sometimes backfire.

Excellent book, look to no other

I took a chance on this book, as it had no reviews. However, none of the others were written by a PhD and this one has a lot more instruction than the all-in-one GRE books. It includes definite, rock solid advice with a minimum of fluff. I also used the ScoreItNow writing practice online for 20 bucks from the ETS GRE website. DO BOTH!

However, before reading this book and practicing like 20 times with the techniques in it, I had a 4. I just got my scores back after using this book, and I had a 6! Wow!

The Very Persistent Gappers of Frip is that rarity, a fable that appeals equally to literate adults and id-crazed kids. Its author, George Saunders, is a Thomas Pynchon-approved, three-time O. Henry Award-winning surrealist writer; its artist, Lane Smith, is the Caldecott-honored illustrator of The Stinky Cheese Man and film designer of James and the Giant Peach. Nothing could evoke Saunders's simple yet extravagant story better than Smith's strange, painterly depictions of the seaside town of Frip, a place of ornery eccentrics and oddball animals. Smith combines some of the virtues of George Grosz, Dr. Seuss, and the Japanese prints called Ukiyo-e ("pictures of the floating world").

Gappers are baseball-sized, burr-shaped orange creatures with a compulsion to creep up out of the sea and fasten themselves to goats, whom they love. "When a gapper gets near a goat it gives off a continual high-pitched happy shriek of pleasure that makes it impossible for the goat to sleep, and the goats get skinny and stop giving milk," writes Saunders. Since Frip survives by selling goat milk, the children must brush gappers off the herd eight times daily and dump them into the ocean. You simply must see Smith's picture of Capable, the book's plucky heroine, emptying her gapper-sack from a precarious cliff picturesquely menaced by subtly colored waves. You'll be torn between lingering over the gorgeous artwork and flipping the page to see how Capable will ever cope with the gapper invasion of Frip, her obdurately past-obsessed widower papa, and her dumb, mean neighbors (two snooty, boy-obsessed girls and a family of singers who are harder on the ears than a keening gapper attached to the goat of its dreams). This is a slim tale, but unquestionably one quite in keeping with Saunders's prizewinning books. The title story of Pastoralia, for instance, is also a fable involving class struggle and people who get snooty about the difficulties of working with goats.

Saunders's (Pastoralia) idiosyncratic voice makes an almost perfect accompaniment to children's book illustrator Smith's (The Stinky Cheese Man) heightened characterizations and slightly surreal backdrops in this unconventional fairy tale for grownups. Saunders describes the setting, the town of Frip, as "three leaning shacks by the sea," which Smith represents as oblong two-story towers in brick red, ocean blue and mint green situated on irregular plots of land with sinewy trees against a yellow sky that suggest a Daliesque eerieness. The 1,500 gappers, spiky little creatures with multiple eyes, feed on the goats that graze the shacks' backyards; by habit, they split into three groups to attack all three properties at once. One day, the gappers decide that henceforth they will concentrate all their efforts on the goats at only one house, the one closest to the seaAinhabited by a girl, Capable, and her grieving, widowed father. Soon, the two unafflicted families begin to tell themselves that they are superior to Capable and her father ("Not that we're saying we're better than you, necessarily, it's just that, since gappers are bad, and since you and you alone now have them, it only stands to reason that you are not, perhaps, quite as good as us"). Of course it's only a matter of time until everybody's luck changes. The Saunders-Smith collaboration is inspired. Smith adds witty touches throughout, and Saunders's dialogue features uncannily amusing deadpan repetitions and platitudinous self-exculpations. Saunders is much too hip to bring this fable to an edifying ending, but things do conclude as happily as is possible in the morally challenged, circumscribed world of Frip.

Adult/High School-Life in Frip, while not necessarily pleasant or fun, was at least predictable. Every day, the gappers would inch out of the sea, attach themselves to goats (which they love), and begin to shriek happily. The goats (who don't love the gappers) would get thin and nervous, and stop giving milk. To save them (and the local economy), the children of Frip would remove the gappers and cast them back into the sea. And so it went, until the day that one gapper figured out that there was no need to split themselves among the three houses in the village. Instead, they could lavish all their affection on the goats of the house closest to the sea. This decision eventually leads to bad blood among neighbors, lots of money for the strong men from Fritch, a restructuring of the local economy, and a resolution to the gappers' sadly unrequited love. This delightful story is lavishly illustrated and the text and the pictures complement one another perfectly. It is a parable of sorts, and one could probably even find a hint of a moral. It is also a wickedly funny, entertaining, and engaging read. Oh, and if at this point you are wondering what a gapper is, close your eyes and picture a bright orange burr about the size of a baseball, with many eyes and one mouth, with which to shriek happily.-Susan Salpini, Purcellville Library, VA

Let me put it this way...

This very evening I discovered the joy of reading George Saunders...
"There were approximately fifteen hundred gappers living in the sea near Frip. Each Frip family had about ten goats. Therefore, there would normally be about five hundred gappers per yard, or fifty gappers per goat."
What is a gapper?
Well, it is this baseball-like, Velcro-type crustacean with multitudinous eyes, that crawls out of the ocean at night along with (give or take) 1,499 of its buddies, all intent upon attaching themselves to local goats in a burr-like fashion. Side effects? Serious immediate goat-lassitude followed by actual withering, and depletion of milk supply!
Exactly! Of course!
It's fabulous.
Oh man... it's been a long while since I got so caught up into one of these child/adult books, the last time being Salman Rushdie's excellent "Haroun And The Sea Of Stories."
This one is every bit as good, or better. And every bit as crazy.
Let me put it this way... I stumbled across this book in the store, sat down with it... read the whole thing, laughed... laughed some more... thought of many people I want to give this book to... and ended up purchasing five copies. One will be for my own re-reading.
It is hilarious, and meaningful all at once... as the slipcover says, it's an "adult story for children, a children's story for adults."
The illustrations are superb, and the quality of the book is impeccable... a work of art.
It is a flawless imaginative work, that... while it makes you laugh at every second sentence, makes you realize that resourcefulness in the midst of undeserved adversity can really save the day! That selfishness is ugly... that neighbors ought to be... neighbors.
This little girl named Capable... she is a terrific role model for children.... and adults!
A brilliant work, and recommended without reservation. When you read this story to children the only question will be, who will love it more, you or them? Neither one loving it is simply an impossibility!

Brilliant adult allegory masked as children's tale

Saunders' brilliant, hilarious adult allegory is masked as a children's tale but is really more of a profound critique of American social Darwinism and the false idea currently held by many rich and privileged that they are rich and privileged due to their own superiority, hard work, or God's election, and not to pure luck. The book is also a thoughtful, funny response to libertarian myths of radical individuality that currently infect American politics like those Gappers of Frip. Older children might enjoy the book as well. I could imagine teaching this book, with wonderful illustrations by Lane Smith, to intelligent ten year olds, but might also integrate the book into a high school English course.

An excellent fable that can be enjoyed on multiple levels

The "Very Presistent Gappers of Frip" is a wonderful fable that adults will love and that kids will enjoy as well, but on a different level. (Much as "the simpsons" has many layers.) The illustrations are also great. Lane Smith's artwork evokes the surreal quality of Saudners prose perfectly. The tale is typical of Saunders' short stories in his earlier books, although without any perversity or "unsuitable" language. The story is bizarre and endearing; the characters live in a world so different than our own, yet they seem so familiar anyway. This book is expensive considering its brevity, but is worth it just for the illustrations, let alone a funny story by George Saunders. In short: Buy it! Buy it now! Buy extra copies to give as gifts!
