Da Chen was born in China in 1962. The grandson of a landlord, he and his family were treated as outcasts in Communist China. In school, Da was an excellent student until a teacher told him that, because of his “family’s crimes,” he could never be more than a poor farmer. Feeling his fate was hopeless, Da responded by dropping out and hanging around with a gang. However, after Mao’s death, Da realized that an education and college might be possible, but he had to make up for the time he’d wasted. He began to study–all day and into the night. His entire family rallied to help him succeed, working long hours in the rice fields and going into debt to ensure that Da would have an education. When the final exam results were posted, he had one of the highest scores in the region and had earned a place at the prestigious Beijing University. Now his family’s past would not harm their future.

Born in 1962 in southern China, Da Chen had monumental hurdles to overcome before he could even walk or talk. Mao Tse-tung's Cultural Revolution was in full swing, and the descendents of landlords, who were despised, were routinely stripped of their wealth, beaten, humiliated, and sent off to labor camps. Da Chen, the grandson of a landlord, lives several parallel lives: he excels in school but then gives up studying in the face of unbearable pressure and harassment from teachers, students, and administrators. He is a self-taught musician but also a member of a gang of toughs. His siblings, banned from school, work from before sunrise to sunset in the muddy, backbreaking rice fields. But eventually all the dichotomies in Da's life come together, and he makes a break for a new life, with higher education as his foundation for future success.

Da Chen's engrossing memoir, adapted for younger readers from his book Colors of the Mountain, paints a colorful, painful, sometimes humorous picture of life during the 1960s and '70s, when formerly privileged Chinese families were at the mercy of Chairman Mao and his ruthless Red Guard soldiers. The writing is at times jerky, other times poetic, and Da Chen's time frame can be confusing. Adapted for young adults from Chen's memoir (Colors of the Mountain), this coming-of-age tale traces the author's boyhood in Maoist China. Born in 1962, Chen grows up in privation and humiliation as the grandson of former landlords. His family has been stripped of property and is cruelly treated by fellow villagers and politicos. Chen's siblings must quit school to become farmers, his father is fired from his teaching job and repeatedly hauled off to labor camp, and his grandfather is publicly beaten. Chen's only recourse is to excel at his studies ("I shone, despite their efforts to snuff me out"). The pacing here lurches a bit; what may have worked well for adult audiences could throw younger readers. However, humor and unflinching honesty inform the narrative, which is shot through with lyrical descriptions ("my fate stood undecided, wavering in the wind like a blade of grass along the Dong Jing River"). Some of the most involving scenes revolve around the boy's gradual inclusion in a Huck Finn-esque gang that cares little about his privileged background. Young adults interested in this area of history may wish to read Ji-li Jiang's recent Red Scarf Girl, which chronicles her adolescence at the time Mao was taking power. Chen's reminiscences add another intriguing perspective on this turbulent time. Ages 12-up.

Gr 7 Up-China's Son is a retelling for young readers of Da Chen's memoir, Colors of the Mountain (Random, 2000), a book easily accessible to older middle and high school students without adaptation. During the Cultural Revolution, even people living in remote villages like Yellow Stone in southern China felt its effects. The author grew up in this small village, and because his grandfather was a landlord, his family was persecuted. Though he was a bright boy and remained in school for most of this period, he was mistreated by students and teachers alike. He eventually began hanging around with a gang of young gamblers and soon abandoned his lessons altogether though he continued to attend school. The Cultural Revolution ran its course, and college became an option. At this point, Da Chen realized how limited his future would be without an education, but by now, he was woefully behind his classmates. He and his older brother began a rigorous course of study to prepare for college entrance exams. Da Chen's admission to Beijing First Foreign Language Institute is the culmination of a powerful but dry coming-of-age story about a young man struggling to figure out just who he is in a society whose very structure is undergoing massive change. China's Son joins Ji-Li Jiang's Red Scarf Girl (HarperCollins, 1997) and Song Nan Zhang's A Little Tiger in the Chinese Night (Tundra, 1993) as part of a growing body of literature about children living during this difficult period of Chinese history.

China's Boy-Definately an engrossing read!

As a 12 year old student, I was assigned to read China's Son as a class project. As usual, I took one look at the cover and felt discouraged. But as I worked my way through the book, I actually began to understand the meaning of Da Chen's words.
Growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution was difficult for poverty stricken Da Chen. The book shows how he deals with his hardships, going from top student to the child no one likes, just because of his social standing. Da even joins a gang of hoodlums in his neighborood, and slowly becomes disinterested in the school he once loved. After dealing with family issues, Da realizes that he wants more in life then to become an uneducated farmer. Determined to succeed, he studies to enter one of China's best collages. Da Chen leaves readers on edge, hoping and praying that Da will make it into collage.
Although the book started off slowly for me, I would most definately reccomend it to any jr. through high schooler. Reading about Da Chen's determination is inspirational!

China's Sons is the intensely personal account of Da Chen, born in China in 1962, is reviewed here for its importance to many an adult reader as well. Chen and his family were outcasts in Communist China, and Da had to drop out of school as a result. When Mao died, Da faced a long struggle to regain his education and go to college � and his entire family helped him succeed. China's Son is an inspirational, insightful autobiography.

Interesting child account of the Cultural Revolution

As an adult interested in China and the Cultural Revolution and having traveled many times to China, I read this book not really expecting to glean much from it. It was well written though and appropriately rated. I found Da Chen a character I could relate with (even as an adult) and discovered his account to be full of emotion: frightened, bitter, angry, excited, happy etc.. I think most of the "facts" were presented in truth.

About the Author
Philip George Zimbardo is a psychologist and a professor emeritus at Stanford University. He became well-known for his 1971 Stanford prison experiment and has since authored various introductory psychology books, textbooks for college students, and other notable works, including The Lucifer Effect, The Time Paradox, and Shyness. He is also the founder and president of the Heroic Imagination Project.

Nikita D. Coulombe is a writer and artist who worked with Philip Zimbardo for several years. Together they co-authored the TED eBook Demise of Guys. Passionate about understanding human nature, she co-founded the sex education blog, BetterSexEd.org.

A Very Important Book About Our Ignored Boys

This book touches on a very real problem in our society that has been heretofore ignored. Too many of our boys are floundering. They're not doing well in any aspect of life, and we as a society are going to pay a very high price for this.

Nearly every family in America has a boy or young man who is faltering. You know, the kid who has given up trying academically and socially in school, the one who nurses his depression in front of a screen in his room. There are millions of these boys out there, and no one really seems to care. Far from caring, most people mock these young men, labeling them losers for not being able to self-heal the problems that afflict them.

The authors do a creditable job of talking about the how and where, but I think they miss a bit on the why. The why has to do with depression and the general diminution of men in our society. Over the past generation, women have been elevated in our society while men have been turned into pariahs. The old roles--the protector, the provider, the adventurer--are considered laughable by contemporary opinion makers. That's why we see today's stereotypical man reduced to the caricature of the dopey fool. Turn on the TV at any point during the night and this is what you will see being presented. Young men can't help but absorb this message.

Not only that, but parents generally raise their boys with much less care than they spend on their daughters. I've seen this in my own family. Girls are nurtured and engaged in a way that the boys never are. Boys are still seen by most parents as problems-in-waiting, incorrigible mooks who need to be kept in line at all costs. Moreover, parents don't take their boys seriously the way they do their girls. They don't tell boys that they can achieve great things, and they don't tell treat them as budding adults, but rather as perpetual children. It's proven that kids will live up or down to whatever labels we assign to them, so it's no wonder that boys are largely living down to the unflattering tags that we've put on them over the last 30 years. We've treated them as problems, and that's what they've become.

Where the authors do a really great job is in detailing the dangers of porn and screen abuse in general. This is a very real issue, one that is not going away anytime soon. Moreover, it's an issue that isn't being widely addressed in society right now. The human brain simply was not engineered to deal with 500 channels of screaming HD content and high-speed internet. Effectively, this degree of stimulation is as powerful as a drug, one that has the power to alter the minds of all who are over-exposed. This issue presents a whole new set of challenges for society at large.

Some of the advice for raising boys is very good as well. Boys need a certain amount of structure and discipline imposed upon them. I think too many parents give up on their boys too easily. They worry about alienating them, so they don't even try to impose any structure in their lives. The authors strike a very appropriate tone here, advocating an approach somewhere between tough love and parental compassion. They point out, correctly, that boys develop self-esteem and pride through accomplishment, so the real path forward is through getting boys engaged in life. The other key point they make here is to get boys into the right environments to succeed, those in which academic achievement is lauded. When boys see that parents and classmates respect high achievement, they'll be more likely to devote themselves to their studies.

Overall, I highly recommend this book, though I do think it could've stood a re-write to polish it a bit more. The prose reads as though the authors were rushing to get this to press, and that does detract a bit from my overall impression of the book. But the message they're selling is spot-on. Definitely required reading for all parents!

About the Author
Sharon Rady Rolfes is a registered dietician nutritionist and a founding member of Nutrition and Health Associates, an information resource center that maintains a research database on more than 1,000 nutrition-related topics. She has taught at Florida State University and coauthored several other college textbooks, including UNDERSTANDING NORMAL AND CLINICAL NUTRITION, 10th EDITION. In addition to writing, she serves as a consultant for various educational projects, and volunteers on the board of Working Well, a community initiative dedicated to creating a healthy workforce. A member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Ms. Rady Rolfes received her MS in nutrition and food science from Florida State University.

Kathryn Pinna received her M.S. and Ph.D. in nutrition from the University of California at Berkeley. She has taught nutrition, food science, and human biology courses in the San Francisco Bay Area for over 25 years and has also worked as an outpatient dietitian, Internet consultant, and freelance writer. Her other publications include the textbooks Understanding Normal and Clinical Nutrition and Nutrition for Health and Health Care. She is a registered dietitian and member of the American Society for Nutrition and the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Ellie Whitney, Ph.D. grew up in New York City and received her BA and PhD degrees in English and Biology at Harvard and Washington Universities. She taught at both Florida State University and Florida A&M University, wrote newspaper columns on environmental matters for the TALLAHASSEE DEMOCRAT, and coauthored almost a dozen college textbooks on nutrition, health, and related topics, many of which repeatedly reappear as new editions. She spen three decades exploring outdoor Florida and studying its ecology, and then cowrote PRICELESS FLORIDA: NATURAL ECOSYSTEMS AND NATIVE SPECIES (Pineapple Press, 2004). Now retired, and more concerned about climate change than any other issue, she volunteers full-time for the nonpartisan national nonprofit Citizens Climate Lobby.

I had to give this book a 3 star rating for the ease of information it contains concerning the enzymatic pathways used by each vitamin or mineral. The book is also easy to read. Having said that however, this book is typical American Dietetic Association Clap Trap. I have both the 6th and 7th Editions of this book and with only small qualifications in the 7th edition, both books endorse aspartame and condemn stevia, regurgitate standard government misinformation about nutrition, knock dietary supplements, and actually list Steven Barrett's Quackwatch site as a reliable source of information on what is quackery and what is not! The chapters on Cancer and HIV and Nutrition are virtually useless. If you do buy this book for the basic information it contains on metabolic pathways and co-enzyme structures, then do yourself a favor and also get "Clinical Nutrition, A Functional Approach", put out by the Institute for Functional Medicine, and "The Real Vitamin and Mineral Book", by Shari Lieberman, among others. Find out the Real Cutting Edge science of Nutrition and why standard American Dietetic Association Fare with their Corrupt Corporate sponsors calling the shots in Government Nutrition information is not reliable.

I bought this book as a requirement for one of my classes. The school was selling this book new for a bit more than $400, I found it new on Amazon for less than $274. It was a great deal.

The book was very helpful to my class. But it was much more helpful to me personally 'cause it helped me understand how to choose my meals wisely. It is the kind of book that you want to keep forever as it has really helpful information that you can apply to your everyday life. I would recommend whoever is interesting in learning more about having a healthy diet to buy this book. It is an amazing guide on how to eat to live healthy as you learn how to choose food, snacks, drinks, etc wisely.

Good Choice for Students, Has Limitations

This book has very scientific explanations of all areas of human nutrition. It is a good choice for students, but not people hoping to get a good reference and go-to book. It gets a little dense on some subjects, and has too much on a few clinical dietetic issues, so overall it can be lopsided. For an inexpensive book for students, it is still a good choice.

I have waited patiently for 6 months and I am so glad to finally have it

I preordered this book way back in April after having purchased a few of Lisa's tutorials from Etsy. I have waited patiently for 6 months and I am so glad to finally have it!

Nitty gritty about the book: The tutorials are very well laid out starting with a brief description of the tools you will need, wire, their gauges, and which tempers she prefers to use in her weaving and why. She then teaches you about each weave she will use in the book as well as her method for teaching them to you. She includes recipes for both lump and gel liver of sulfur and while she does not show all of her projects finished with this patina, you can see what kind of beauty it can add to the depth of a piece when the steps she gives you are done. Some of her pieces are left to patina on their own naturally and look just as stunning. There is also a whole section devoted to some of the techniques she uses to finish her pieces (which you can see just on the one cuff on the cover as an example.) She shows how to make her style of "gooseneck" hook closures as well as the way she embellishes her jewelry with beads.

The book is then separated into project chapters by difficulty (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) with each difficulty having 4 projects in each and the advanced one having 5 projects. Followed lastly by a smaller gallery showcase of her work. Now I do say "smaller gallery" of her work because in the 3 years that I have been following her work, she has amassed a crazy amount of work that could fit many, many more pages than they had included. I wish they would have included just a few more of her works as her work is just incredible.

For those that may be intimidated by the thought of trying this style of wirework out, let me say this: Lisa has made it very, very approachable! There are step by step pictures and thorough explanations for each tutorial. Each and every one of these projects is doable. There are projects that use cabochons and instead of using cabochons that you will never see that size of or a cabochon that you will never ever find, Lisa not only uses somewhat standard size cabochons, she tells you how to upsize or downsize the pattern of the wirework to make it fit the cabochon that you are using. This, to me, is highly important!

If you are just starting out and this is your first time wire working and you want to see results fast, I would recommend starting with Spiral Woven Hoops. It is the very first project in the book and it was one of the projects that I had happened to purchase from her Etsy store. They do not take long to make, but they look like you spent hours on. They also teach you some really great basics on weaving and controlling your wire.

There are not enough great things that I can say about the book and the author. There were not a lot of negatives I could say other than what I had pointed out, such as wishing there were a few more pictures of some of her work. I would have loved for them to include, for instance, a couple variations the "Mirror Image Bracelet." This bracelet has the ability to have so many variations depending on stone placement and weave placement based on just how you weave it. I learned that just by seeing some of Lisa's work on other sites.

I hope my review helps someone who may be on the fence on whether to get this book or not. For me, it was worth every second I waited for it. :)

My husband kept saying her wire work was sexy...

Fantastic book. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to learn wire weaving. I had to buy the book. My husband a jewelry artist of more than 30 years who does not appreciate wire wrap or wire weave, kept looking over my shoulder when I was looking at Lisa Barth's latest designs and uttering words like, "wow! I like that one, it's sexy!". A jewelry artist in my own right and a teacher, I was getting a little jealous. He always complimented me on my work but never said my work was "sexy". I had to do something! I bought the book and I would recommend it to eveyone. Bring the sexy into your wire work. Lisa Barth does introduce wire weaving to anyone who is willing to learn. Her step by step is easy to follow and soon your significant others will be saying, "wow, that's sexy" too.

Several months ago I discovered Lisa Barth's wire work and patiently waited for this book to arrive. It was well worth the wait! I've worked with wire weaving on my own for several years and, when I discovered Lisa's work, I wanted to learn more from her. She uses several weaving techniques I've seen elsewhere but never combined in such an elegant fashion. This book is well laid out with beautiful photographs of both finished work and the steps involved in making such work. In her introduction, she mentions that one of her goals is to take the "intimidation" out of learning how to work with wire; not all artists want others to know their secrets. This book covers the tools and materials needed, the basic weaves, and a series of projects from beginning to more advanced. Everything is clearly laid out and explained; very user friendly for a beginner or someone more experienced but wanting to hone their craft. I particularly love the step by step photographs; it's the closest you will come to taking an actual class with Lisa. Thank you for sharing your talent and expertise with the rest of us; I can't wait to get started!

Great book, Loved it !

This is a great book, I loved it !!! It really kept my interest from beginning to end. The main character just stole my heart , I won't say too much , but you can't help but to love this guy. This book is a good quick read and I can't wait to read more. I greatly recommend this book! !!!

Great Score at a Fair Price!

This score is the complete Broadway version of the show with all the incidental music etc. My Fair Lady is a classic Lerner and Lowe and students of musical theater need to have this. It contains pieces like The Ascot Gavotte...not found elsewhere. The Overture will take some careful fingerwork, but worth it. I'm a theater organist and find it easily adaptable.

This score is exactly what is provided when a theater company rents the performance rights to My Fair Lady. Studying from this score has been a great advantage while preparing to conduct performances of this show.

The score arrived in excellent condition and well within the advertised time frame.
It is clearly printed and well cued for the various instruments. However, the instrumental cues,as marked, refer to the original instrumentation of the 1956 broadway performance and are not of much value to amateur performances using the supplied smaller Orchestra versions most groups will need to use.
If you are luckey enough to be able to use the larger orchestration then it is a great help to the MD who does not have the benefit of a full Orchestra score (partiture).
