Natasha's book is informative, well researched and transparent about her own bipolar and depressive disorder. She provides plenty of links to her research, explains the symptoms of each condition and discusses the manifestations of her own symptoms, leaving room for the individual experiences of those of us whose experience with these illnesses have taken a slightly different turn. Natasha also provides management and coping skills in clear ways to us and those of our family in ways that help us communicate about it perhaps for the first time. I highly recommend this book to those living with bipolar and depressive disorder, and to those family members of those coping with these disorders.

A Rare Book

Thank Heaven. As patients and loved ones, we are ill-served by our choices in reading material. Books that delve into the clinical and scientific and recovery issues from the viewpoint of the patient who has experienced it all are in extremely short supply. Unless we become our own experts, recovery is going to be extremely problematic. Accordingly, we need to be jumping for joy over the publication of Natasha Tracy's Lost Marbles.

Natasha takes you by the hand and walks you through the bipolar experience every step of the way - from unusual behaviors that set off alarms to the trauma of a crisis to the shock of receiving a diagnosis to the long hard road in reclaiming your life. Eventually, as you acquire your own insight and wisdom, you will be able to let go of Natasha's hand. You're in charge, now.

One example: We're used to hearing about meds from a doctor's perspective or from disgruntled patients with an anti-meds axe to grind. What is lacking is the viewpoint of someone who has come to terms with the reality that meds will remain a constant in her life. Once again, Natasha is walking you through the process. Some of you may feel that her analysis could have benefited from a more critical look at this topic, but here is the bottom line: Natasha genuinely cares about her readers. Bipolar is an illness that takes no prisoners. We have the right to make our own choices, but they need to be informed choices. In the case of meds, the more you know about them, the better they will work for you. At last, someone amongst us has taken the trouble to lay it out for us.

The meds part of her book will probably grab all the attention. What I find more important is her insights from having lived inside her own brain for the last 18 or so years as a bipolar patient. Doctors aren't equipped to write this stuff. Natasha is. We badly need more Natasha's.

Excellent Read - Very Accurate

Fantastic read. As I also live with treatment-resistant bipolar 1, I can attest that Natasha's account is accurate. Her honesty is refreshing having dealt with Doctor's that made me feel like I failed when treatments didn't work. Thank you for the honesty, Natasha. Thank you for taking the time and having the presence of mind to see the illness for what it is, and to being committed to living as fully as possible. I have read the ebook but will be purchasing a hard copy to share with my family.

Thorough, Detailed and Terrific!

I'll start by confessing that one of the many reasons I've been excited about reviewing Mastering Comics: Drawing Words & Writing Pictures Continued, is that I am a (very amateur) comic strip artist myself. And with graphic novels and new comics exploding, I'm certainly not the only one who wants learn more about visual storytelling.

Mastering Comics is a follow up book to Drawing Words & Writing Pictures: Making Comics: Manga, Graphic Novels and Beyond by comic artists Jessica Abel and Matt Madden. The first book is essentially an introduction course on comic creation, while this new book is a continuation of that course, offering advanced tips to help serious comic artists really hone their skills and to give teachers a great textbook for their students.

This beautiful book is a meaty 318 pages of detailed technique and creative homework assignments. The book starts with lessons about building stories by drawing pictures and working through the challenges of facing blank pages to come up with original ideas. In the section called Writing Words, there are detailed instructions on how to develop a story and write a script while thinking visually.

Readers will also learn how to create visual relationships with their comic panels, create comics for books vs. screens and choose the right style to tell their story. In addition, there's essential information on lettering and web comics and even an incredible section about using ink and making your own paint tools. The last sections of the book deal with gray scales, color, book covers and getting your comic ready for the printer. There are also a couple of vital chapters dedicated to selling your comics, whether on your own or through a publisher.

Reading this book is a reminder that being a true professional comic artist requires great skill and technique, which take time and hard work to develop. Mastering Comics is like having a private mentor guiding you through the learning process and challenging you to think in wonderful ways you never thought you could.

Excellent classroom in book format

Matt and Jessica have extensive experience creating and teaching comics and in their first book, Drawing With Words and Pictures, they shared a portable classroom. Now they come back to us with further lessons in this companion book. The book covers more advanced topics in creating a good comic, such as story composition; coloring and formatting pictures; and even more importantly it has a section on how to self-publish and getting published, surely to be helpful to young writers/artists just starting out. Just like the first book, this one is divided into easy to read sections so the book can be used as a textbook or for an individual course study, which is extremely helpful and makes the book very versatile.

This text is heavily illustrated with examples to help guide readers on seeing the lesson in action. Jessica and Matt use examples, not just from their own works, but examples from other professionally published artists so that readers have an extensive bibliography of images to look at (and look for.) They also supplement the text with "further reading" sections, which allow a reader/student to continue their learning and more importantly to get an additional point of view from other working artists. I also really like how they've broken down homework assignments in the book. Not only do they put assignments at the back of each chapter to help readers learn the concepts that they've been reading about, but they also put some right after they've talked about a particular aspect, such as scriptwriting. They walk the reader through how to start the process step by step and offer examples of things to do along the way.

My favorite section in this book might just be "The Horror of the Blank Page," which lists ways to overcome the fear of a blank page and getting some ideas on where to go next. It's helpful to know that even the authors, experienced artists that they are, still struggle sometimes with overcoming that scary empty white page. And I think that's something else that is helpful, that Jessica and Matt share some of their own personal experiences in this book, which for me helps make reading the book easier knowing that yes, they've encountered some of these same issues that have plagued me. An important addition to this book Matt and Jessica talk about webcomics, even encouraging the students to give them a try to gain experience with not only how they work, but to help artists/writers improve upon their skill set.

This this is a great book for providing practical lessons that will be useful to readers whether they are doing a self study or in a class. Even more so it's a great book for fans of comics/graphic novels to see what type of work goes into creating the these items that they enjoy.

If you are serious about making a comic book, this is the book for you. Be warned: it is not for the half-hearted, or those with the attitude, "I might want to do this." Mastering Comics: Drawing Words & Writing Pictures Continued will eat up your free time and require a strict work ethic, but it will help you start and finish your comic book. From drawing practice to scriptwriting technique, inking, coloring, and even binding, authors Jessica Abel and Matt Madden take you step-by-step through the process with explanations, examples, and exercises. They even take you beyond the final product, giving tips on finding publishers and distributors.

Make no mistake, Mastering Comics is a great book, but only if it is used properly. If you are willing to commit yourself to completing the activities, to truly studying and working on your craft, Mastering Comics will help you improve your skills.

Hooked on Cryptics!

I have always been intrigued by the British cryptic crosswords, but also intimidated by the indecipherable clues. But thank the spirit of words that Emily Cox and Henry Rathvon have written this great book which explains clearly the types of crptic clues in an entertaining and informative fashion. With plain language the authors point out the types of cryptic clues (anagrams, homophones, containers, charades, deletions, hidden, reversals, etc.) which are cleverly disguised to trick you away from the answer. I highly recommend this book to all those who are curious about cryptic crosswords. I only hope the authors follow up with their own volume of cryptic crosswords.

Get ready for a challenge

For those of you who are getting bored with conventional crossword puzzles and want to try something different, try a cryptic crossword. It combines the grid and clues of a regular crossword with a bit of wordplay to make it tougher and more interesting. This book provides excellent instructions on how to solve one, with plenty of examples and 8 warm-up puzzles. Next come 15 standard block cryptic puzzles for you to practice on. Then comes the type of cryptic puzzle that Cox and Rathvon are known for: their variety cryptics. These puzzles have a extra twist to them, such as missing clues or grid letters, words changing direction or position in the grid, modified letters, and other devilish permutations to keep you on your toes. These 50 variety cryptics are taken from the pages of the Atlantic Monthly. Finally, Cox and Rathvon provide a couple of chapters on the rules and strategies for creating your own cryptic puzzles.
Once you get the hang of it, solving cryptics is like eating potato chips... you simply can't stop. So you will be happy to know that there is a companion book to this one, called "Atlantic Monthly Cryptic Crosswords," that picks up where this one leaves off and provides another 45 devilishly difficult variety cryptics for you to enjoy.

Easy to digest best practices and landscape summary book

If you are not sure where to begin with APIs, or you are having trouble putting all the pieces together in planning an API specification, then this book will help you a lot. It also acts as a launchpad, directing you out to various tools and services on the internet that can assist you in creating and managing an API specification. The main tool used here is the RAML (RESTful API Modeling Language) specification.

The subject matter is delivered fluidly, making this book an easy read. There are many instances where topics are repeated in different verbiage, but for the most part I felt this was helpful to solidify the knowledge.

What the book is lacking in is granular details, or other various "gotchas" when it comes to writing and maintaining actual code projects. While it does give solid advice and best practices, these were not enough for me to feel comfortable jumping directly into writing a RAML representation for my own API. There simply wasn't enough "code walkthrough" for me to get started directly from this book.

Overall, this is a good place to start. It is a best practices and landscape summary book. It will get you thinking in the right direction.

Hey, I am not complaining the content, but I the kindle version is mediocre. It seems like a pdf version instead of epub. The resolution of the figure is low and blur. I would not recommend Kindle version until they get the book full converted.

A Rush Job that Simply Restates the Adobe Help File

Photoshop CC has a completely different look than previous versions and has many more menus and options. If any app cries out for the "missing manual," this is the one. Experienced Photoshop users can quickly find most of the familiar tools and settings, but it would be almost impossible to figure out how to utilize the full power of the CC on one's own. I learned almost everything I know about Photoshop from my 10-year old, dog-eared copy of "Photoshop 6 for Dummies," and so I assumed that this book would provide the same kind of help. Wrong! Deke McClelland, the author of the old manual, was a lively and opinionated writer who could steer you through the maze of tools and menus by pointing out which were essential and which were repetitious or of little practical use. The CC manual, on the other hand, is a sleep-inducing compilation that adds little or nothing to what is available for free from Adobe's help file and online tutorials. There's not one opinion in this manual nor any other indication that the author has actually USED CC for work or pleasure. I suspect that when the Wiley Corporation,a giant publisher of technical books, acquired the "Dummies" brand they replaced the editors and writers who gave the books their distinctive character, I'm sure that they will find their way to innovative publishers. I just hope it will happen soon.

only a real dummy would buy this

i bought this book when i bought photoshop cc thinking that it would teach me how to use the product. what this book does is elaborately tell you what photoshop can do without actually telling you how to do anything. i read the first 5 chapters and couldn't even begin to work with my photos. i gave up after that. if you want a tome of nearly useless facts, this is the book for you. But if you want to work on your photos, don't be a dummy and buy something else. In all fairness, the author states that this dummies book is a "reference" volume -but do you really need a dictionary when all you want to know is how to fashion a basic sentence?

If you dont understand Photoshop CC dont buy this book.

I am a long term amateur photographer and a reasonably proficient lightroom user. I have played around with many cheaper editing tools (eg PSE and GIMP over the years) I plumped for the LR and PS cc package when they came out so I was looking for a book to allow me get to grips with PS. I was very impressed by the dummies series of books - especially the recent exceptional "digital photography lighting". However "Photoshop for dummies" is nowhere near this standard and I cannot recommend it for the following reasons:

- I am guessing that most readers will be upgrading from basic editing tools like me. For such a readership the first third of the book is wasted - if we need to know what a pixel is in the 21st century then we've bought the wrong program let alone book.
- Likewise the authors enslavement to presenting balanced content for me leads the the last third being wasted too. I think he tacitly admits this by saying things like "it's a reference book". So the last third is non photographic uses of Photoshop and how to use a $2500 pen and tablet combo, 3D and video...
- Finally the middle of the book - probably the main reason people move to Photoshop: layers, selecting, masking, enhancing... This is a disaster. The matey tone is great but not for, lets face it, a software manual ... It's hard to follow the thread and practise what he is describing. I'm afraid we need clear step by step worked examples and clear pictures (see below). Stop describing the benefits and features and options.. .show us one good set of instructions and we will learn by doing.
- Did I mention the pictures? They are muddy and way too small. Important menu selections supposedly being described take up about a millimetre on the page. Whats weird is that the tiny pictures are surrounded by acres of wasted white gutter and margins etc or whatever its called in DTP.

In summary the author has tried to cover everything and fails completely in my opinion. The first third is too basic. The second third is just badly explained and formatted. And the last third is wasted on most people - probably way too little info for someone who needs it. I wish the author had researched what most people in the dummies bracket look for and help them through those tasks - the rest we can then figure out by practising, from the manual that comes with the $2500 tablet and on youtube.
