Not worth the $ and frustration

I returned to college to further my education this year after working as a High School Chemistry and Biology teacher for the last 5 years, and your text "Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac) 8th Edition" is the required text that we are using for my Quantitative Analysis course. Myself and numerous other students in the class have found ourselves completely exasperated with the text for numerous reasons. Some of the reasons are as follows:

1. Formulas written incorrectly, while the definition/derivation is written properly right next to it, or vice versa.

2. Incorrect answers to the end of the chapter questions given in the back of the book.

3. The end of the chapter questions will often have no previous examples shown in the chapter, or in the chapters prior to it. Essentially there is no guide or basis to begin a question.

4. Asking for something in a way that is so convoluted that one has no idea what is being asked.

5. Suddenly using or asking for a term that has never been used in the book. Such as asking for "molar solubility"...nothing in text as to referred, nothing in the index, and nothing in the glossary.

6. Your solved examples within the chapter are atrocious, in that they are of virtually no use when trying to use them as a guide to the end of the chapter questions. And thank you for skipping/not showing steps or assuming things in the problems when they are shown.

These are great given that one comes to consider the questions, Did I make an algebraic error in solving? Was the formula given the correct one, and was it even given correctly? Did I do it correctly, and is it just the wrong answer given in the back of the text?

I have taken into consideration that I have been out of school for a while and that I may not be as sharp as I used to as far as some of the more complicated calculations, because I have not had much practice recently, however, when one is trying to learn from a book that makes it so hard to do anything with it, it makes it about as useful as a paperweight, which is about the best use I have for it now. A $100+ paperweight.

I thought that the mistakes were due to an early edition text, but with a simple view of the front of this book one can readily see that this is the 8th edition...the EIGHTH edition! One would think that after writing the same book 8 times, these errors and some general refinements may have taken place; thank you for the exception to the rule.

In all my years of school, I have come across many books, both used to learn from as well as ones to teach from, and I have never found a more poorly done text.

We, the students and professor, have created a website solely dedicated to the errors or oddities that we have so far found in the text: Needless to say, it continues to grow.

I will say that it is nice to see you incorporating Excel and other software into the text, which is beneficial in its use in Industry and presentation.

Work carefully and check the author's math if perplexed

Overall, the book is average. Towards the end when you start reviewing different techniques like voltammetry, potentiometry, spectrometry, and seperations the author explains the material fairly well (and has the least in text problems). I noticed a lot of errors in the book for the in text examples so be careful when checking your answer. I bought the solutions manual to this book and a couple of questions in the manual actually stated that the answers in the back of the book were incorrect. Be very careful from chapters 9-20, as I noticed a few examples had math errors. Also, at least for me, the mathmatics were derived, but not explained as to understand why they add a new term or perform an operation. I would have liked to see them relate the math to the concept better than they did. If you sit with this book (I mean really sit with it) you'll do fine. This is not a text nor a course that you can cram for. It has to be studied everyday of the week.

Lousy textbook, Chemistry students beware!

I have had nothing but problems with this book. The practice problems in the chapter do not reflect the ones at the end of the chapter, which pretty much leaves it up to you to figure out what is going on. The chapters are not well written in the first place! Very hard to follow! There is no supplemental solution manual to follow along with so you can see how the practice problems were solved. I could go on and on. In general, possibly the worst chemistry text I have ever had to use.

Lamott's suggestion on the craft of fiction is down-to-earth: worry about the characters, not the plot. But she's even better on psychological questions. She has learned that writing is more rewarding than publication, but that even writing's rewards may not lead to contentment. As a former "Leona Helmsley of jealousy," she's come to will herself past pettiness and to fight writer's block by living "as if I am dying." She counsels writers to form support groups and wisely observes that, even if your audience is small, "to have written your version is an honorable thing."

While discussing elements of the craft such as character development, plot invention, and rewriting, she presents much more than an instruction manual in this small text. Writing is by nature a personal and solitary trade, and Lamott offers thorough examples and anecdotes that explain how she copes with self-doubt, writer's block, professional jealousy, and the discipline necessary to turn thoughts into words on a page. Her work is an honest appraisal of what it takes to be a writer and why it matters so much. Collections supporting creative writing will want to include this because it offers unique inspiration to would-be and struggling authors.

Lamott is sarcastic and angry, difficult to learn from

I read Bird by Bird and found it depressing. I am not a naturally sarcastic or angry person but Ms. Lamott seems to be and I couldn't get into it. I know other reviewers think she is hilarious but I though she was mostly rude and unkind. If you enjoy a mocking kind of humor, maybe her messages on writing will get through better than what other's have published but, for me, I didn't get her. I did like one or two things she said (like her comment about why she has a 1 inch picture frame on her desk: to remind her to just write this scene or that dialogue or that little bit of character description, bit by bit, bird by bird. That helps her keep writing. This is pretty much the same advice on how to eat an elephant) and the story about her 3 year old son and his keys was funny.

I didn't read anything that Stephen King didn't say better, more clearly and more usefully in On Writing. When I read On Writing, I met a man who, in spite of all his failings as a human being, I liked and respected him when I finished reading. His book also helps with teaching writers the joy of and need for a good editor. He also gives some reasoned advice on how to get published whereas Ms. Lamott is kind of cruel towards her students who might have wanted to see themselves published. She is not an encourager whereas King is. I "met" Anne Lamott in the Bird book and, unfortunately, I only felt sorry for her and was ready to leave her company quickly. i did finish reading but barely.

Absolute must read! An author at any stage in their career WILL benefit from this!

I've listened to this book, (Audiobook) more than a dozen times. Her writing style keeps me interested, along with her topics. She brings personal stories into her book, and combines them with hints, suggestions and instructions to either start, better or further your career. She does this through personal stories. It’s clear from her book that becoming a successful author is difficult and time consuming. A person will have many rejections and not everyone will make it as an author. She often writes as if she were talking to a friend, which adds comedy to the book.

This book alone has made Anne Lamott one of my top three favorite authors. This was the first writing book I purchased. I took quite a bit from Bird by Bird and incorporated it into my books. This is the book I hold all other writing books to. Given her talent, it is impossible to compare any other books to hers.

It's okay. It wasn't interesting enough for me to finish.

It's a decent book. I was just looking for a product to give more details about how to teach students to write compelling essays for college. I needed more concrete activities and guidance. This book didn't provide that, but it was a decent read.

1 Star (I hate it!) : The lowest score possible. Definitely not worth the money and time and effort! should only use this when the product really does not reflect the product listing. If there are any positives at all to the product or its use, you should not give it 1 star.
2 Stars (I don't like it.): The product is not exactly as described, either appearance-wise or functionally. The product may still be usable but it’s very different to what was described. The product may have a few faults. I'm not a fan of this item as it is no where close to my expectations and I won't order it again, but I can imagine a few others might find it functional as it has at least one positive quality.
3 Stars (It's okay): This item has both positive and negative qualities. I can definitely see some people loving or liking it as it may work for them, but I would likely not purchase in future. While you might think a 3-star score equates to average, 3 stars counts against the product as a negative score. So if you’re not meaning to give it a negative score, rethink your 3-star rating!
4 Stars (I like it): The product is as described and functions well. There may be a few minor issues, but all in all, the product is solid. This item arrived and functions as advertised. I would change a few things about this, but is a good product overall. I would use this item.
5 Stars (I love it!): This item is AWESOME. I will use it and recommend it to others! I just LOVE it! It works as advertised and is an all-around great product. product is amazing! You love it! This is the highest of the highs. If you would recommend it to your friends, family — it’s definitely a 5-star score. Be unbiased here; if the product is exactly as described and meets expectations, but the product isn’t your personal favorite, it could still be 5 stars.

Stitching, Not Stamping "How-To"

If you are looking for a "how to" guide to leather stitching and molding, this is the book for you. If you are looking for a "how to" book on leather stamping and tooling, keep looking. My interests lie mainly in the latter. That being said, this is a valuable book for anyone working with leather because it provides wonderfully complete information about what leather is, how hides and skins are processed for various types of leather crafting, and how to select and choose leather for various projects. I am happy and pleased to have this valuable resource book and do not regret, in the least, buying it. I am sure that I will refer to it often!

Really great book that is exactly what it says it is

I am new to leatherworking. As a disclaimer, I have not used most of the techniques taught in this book yet. But...
I started leatherworking by learning how to tool with a swivel knife and stamping tools. Once I got the hang of that I realized I needed a better understanding of how to construct the items to be tooled. Most of the resources I found online (and from Tandy Leather) had to do with western-style tooling. I had not found a reliable and comprehensive source for the techniques of leather goods construction. Most of the advice or instruction I found online was pretty haphazard. I ended up spending good money on tools I didn't need based on patchy advice.

This book lays it all out for you: The different types of leather and the best applications for each; the best needle/thread gauge for each application; the different types of hand-stitch and when to use them; a good overview of all the tools you'll need to make just about anything. And then it shows you three levels of projects to take you from beginner to (hopefully) competent leatherworker.

There are many resources for how to tool leather, but this is by far the best I've found for how to make the goods you may want to tool. It's a shame that this book seems to be out of print.

Super useful tips. I'm not sure you can learn from this book alone--I've consulted a variety of sources, this book and others, and most importantly my local leather store. But when learning a new technique or skill, this is the book where I *start*, and it always gives me the information I need to get started and good tips on where to go from there. I consult this book constantly.

An excellent story

This is the only Brenda Joyce book thus far that has made me cry.

I thought Violet Cooper was an endearing heroine. She never had opportunities for education and such, but when they were offered to her she didn't turn them down. Her goal throughout was to better herself. Some of the situations were implausible, yes, but isn't that why they call it fiction?

I was somewhat surprised by the ending although it was hinted at several times throughout the story.

I have enjoyed all of Brenda Joyce's books thus far, my favorite being "The Third Heiress," but I especially like the time and place of books like "The Finer Things."

Rags To Riches Romance

Brenda Joyce redoes the always fun Pygmalion tale in her newest novel THE FINER THINGS.

Violette Cooper is a child of the streets. Abandoned by her drug addicted Father, she struggles, stealing when necessary, in order to survive. She wants so much more out of life than what fate has handed her. When Sir Thomas, a kindly old Knight, offers her his hand in marriage she sees it as an opportunity to better herself and agrees to become his wife.

Sir Thomas introduces her to his friends', the Harding family, who immediately become enamored by the mix of beauty and innocence she presents and aren't offended by her heavy Cockney accent and her social faux pas. Violette finds herself drawn to the younger, handsome Harding son, Blake, but will not do anything to hurt her good-hearted husband/savior.

When Thomas dies and his hateful daughter begins to throw around accusations that Violette may have murdered him Blake feels compelled to help the innocent beauty. She falls in love with Blake and comes to the realization that he will never reciprocate her feelings unless she becomes a real Lady so she decides to take some lessons and succeeds in transforming herself. Unfortunately, no amount of lessons are going to soften Blake's hardened heart. Eight years earlier the love of his life shattered his dreams and he's made a vow that he will never open his heart again. Besides this little obstacle there are many other things conspiring to keep these two apart: murder charges, stubbornness, miscommunication, insecurity, another suitor, a tragic accident involving a family member and some more miscommunication.

Readers will admire the way Violette struggles to pull herself up out of the dregs of society and become a real Lady but may tire of some of the choices she makes and the lack of communication between this couple. The hero is sweetly protective of the heroine and a man devoted to his family but he has one heck of time admitting to his feelings when it comes to matters of the heart. The sexual tension and love scenes are tamer than the previous Joyce book I've read so readers looking for a sweeter story will not be disappointed with this gut-wrenching and tear-jerking read

About the Author
Mark Evanier met Jack Kirby in 1969, worked as his assistant, and later became his official biographer. A writer and historian, Evanier has written more than 500 comics for Gold Key, DC Comics, and Marvel Comics, several hundred hours of television (including Garfield) and is the author of several books including Mad Art (2002). He has three Emmy Award nominations, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award for animation from the Writers Guild of America.

I loved this book! Minor spoilers.

Let me preface this review by saying the hard core Jack Kirby fan may not be that impressed with this book; if you have more than a handful of the Jack Kirby Collector issues, you may be familiar with most of the text and images that this book presents.

For the neophyte or moderate Kirby fan, this is really an outstanding book. The 2 page spread of pencils for "Street Code" that begins on page 28 is jaw dropping and worth the price of admission. There are a lot of scans of Kirby's original penciled pages; you can see where he erased and touched up lines and it provided me with more than a few "wow" moments as someone who draws and likes to study others' work.

The text of Kirby's history can be a bit depressing and it is presented in detail here:

- (un)steady work in the 40s and 50s that doesn't bring steady finances.

- Break through characters, art and comics with Marvel in the 60s that do not bring recognition to Kirby among the public at that time.

- Editors liking Kirby's page layouts, but bringing in other artists to change faces of prominent characters with before and after illustrative examples.

Finally in 1978, Kirby got some animation jobs with "young artists who'd grown up on his work and old-timers who valued the hell out of him." Combined with the popularity of comic book conventions and demand for artists' work (though Kirby had to hire lawyers to get pages back from Marvel) finally brought him some well deserved recognition and finances.

Kirby's amazing, visual & historic impact

Reading about history is fascinating; seeing history spring to life can at times be even better. King of Comics uses words & images of various kinds to *depict* the life of Kirby: visual reproductions, photos, pencils, inks, colors, and original comic art are all represented here.

Highlights here for me...
*Vintage photos & scans- check out the early, black & white images on pages 34, 67, and 211. Photos like these go a long way to making history spring to life.
*Original artwork- I love Kirby's graphite & cream-colored army drawings on pages 66 & 67. I also like the Sandman sketch on page 10, the Popeye sketch on page 35, Kirby's Marines Toys for Tots poster on page 157, and the many scans of inked original comic pages. The Jimmy Olsen scans on pages 166 & 167 are particularly eye-grabbing & highly stylized. Many images in these pages are rare & highly collectible.

It's virtually a Kirby museum in print, at about 9-1/2"W x 12-1/2"L, and 220+ pages. Famous comics covers are also reproduced, like Action Comics #1, Marvel Comics #1, Captain America Comics #1, Brave & the Bold #28, Fantastic Four #1, New Gods #1, etc. These images are landmarks in comicbook history, and Kirby's impact in comics' Golden & Silver Ages is amazing to say the least. Objectively speaking, as far as I can understand, there can be only one, *real* King of Comics. Jack Kirby certainly gets my vote!

Until a comprehensive bio comes out, this will have to do.

Filled with phenomenal examples of Kirby's art, KIRBY: KING OF COMICS is a great primer to the work of one of comics' true legends. "Street Code," Kirby's look at childhood on the mean streets of NY, alone is worth the price of admission, but the book is filled any number of rarely published pieces, often from the original pencils. The text from Mark Evanier, a talented writer and longtime Kirby associate, proves to be a bit of a disappointment. Evanier does a fine job of encapsulating Kirby's life, focusing on the high and low points of Kirby's storied career, but the work is simply lacking in the depth that I have come to expect from current biographies. Simon and Kirby, the Marvel years, the creation of the "Fourth World" are looked at, but it's little more than a cursory glance. Less than half the book is text, and even with the oversize pages, (Great for the art repros!) it still feels skimpy on details. Maybe, at some point in the future a definitive bio will come out; until then fans will have to make due with this loving tribute.

The struggle for acceptance by an immigrant

My Son the fanatic is a short story of an immigrant from Pakistan. The underlying theme of this novel is the struggle of the asian immigrants face in an alien society which refuses to accept them, treat them as equals and the ways in which they deal with the alienation. There is a sharp contrast in the way Pervez and his son Farid deal with the sense of belonging and being a part of society.
With all the compromises and loses Pervez suffers in his migration; he appears to take them as a part of his experience and adventure of life; to him it seems to be worth the price. He mentions how better his life has been in comparison to having stayed back. He refuses to acknowledge the cold behavior of the local British.
His son Farid on the other hand seems to have considerable anger and is not disillusioned by the British cold behavior. He finds the society constraining, limiting and degrading and feels to be a victim in his country. Having been excluded he is tempted to exclude others. He finds comfort with his own people and gets attached towards Islam. Having been brought up in secular Britan , he would turn the to a form of belief that denies him the pleasure of society in which he lived. Having devoted his life to pleasure: the pleasure of sex, music, alcohol and friends; he detracts and spends time in abstinence; for in abstinence he felt strong.
Hanif in his short novel has touched the conflicts a lot of asian families feel having migrated to a foreign country. He has outlined the characters brilliantly and this is most certainly a very entertaining novel to read.

WHO IS THE FANATIC?

My oppinion is that this story shows the real life of many Father-Son-Relationships. In this story are shown many different Problems. For Example: Father-Son-Conflict,Problems for immigrants or living with an other culture. The story is written very good and I think many people can identify with this story. In Germany I think there are not so many people who know this Problems. This story can informate people about the problems which many other people have.

About the Author
William Pike's background includes experience as both an equity and high yield bond portfolio manager at Fidelity Investments. He taught the introductory investment course sporsored by the Boston Security Analyst s Society for more than 20 years. The early editions of this book are the outgrowth of that course. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst with a degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from Columbia University. He has provided investment commentary on radio and television and has spoken before a variety of investment groups.

Patrick C. Gregory, CFA is an analyst and portfolio manager with 18 years of multi-industry experience. He is currently working as a Senior Equity Analyst for FM Global, where he manages the healthcare sector of a $4.8 billion portfolio. Prior to joining FM Global, Patrick was a full-time faculty member at Bentley College.  While at Bentley, he served as the Managing Director of the Hughey Center for Financial Services and was the recipient of the Davis Fellow.  Patrick has taught graduate and undergraduate courses in investments, risk management, and portfolio management for many years. Given his experience in industry and academia, Patrick has appeared on CNN and CNBC and provided commentary to a number of news sources, including the Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Boston Globe, and LA Times. He holds advanced degrees in both Finance and Financial Planning.  Patrick is a CFA Charterholder and member of the CFA Institute and Boston Security Analyst Society (BSAS).

Great Place To Start

I have been investing for over 10 years and read a number of investment books. When I got this book I was both skeptical and intrigued by the subtitle, "The Book You Need To Understand Other Investment Books", but after going through it, I can understand why the authors call it that. A lot of investment fundamentals are covered in depth that other books assume you know already.
Positives: 1. Good introduction to balance sheets and income statements without taking an accounting course. Numerical examples and calculation are well laid out and easy to follow. 2. Good discussion of cash flow and how it is used by investment analysts. 3. The last chapter is a case study of Abbott Labs. I found it really helpful in understanding what an investment analyst does.
Strongly recommended!

Textbook at best

I guess I didn't understand the purpose of this book before purchasing it. Calling this a "simple guide for beginning investors" is far from correct. It's complex and pretty bland, leaving me feeling reminiscent of the days of reading college textbooks. If you are looking for a very thorough, textbookish outline of business and investing, this is the book for you. If you're looking for a simple guide to investing and the stock market, turn away.

1-1. PURPOSE. Volume III of the Joint Oil Analysis Program (JOAP) Manual presents the methodology for
evaluating spectrometric analyses of samples from aeronautical equipment. The methodology enables an
evaluator to identify wear metals present in the sample and their probable sources, to judge equipment condition,
and to make recommendations which influence maintenance and operational decisions. Following these
recommendations can enhance safety and equipment reliability and contribute to more effective and economic
maintenance practices.
