Big Book For A Short Subject But Thought-Provoking

The story of how the unique culture of teenagers came to rise in the 20th century. Teenagers, the most gossiped-about, the most storied, envied, disliked, discriminated against, and misunderstood group of all modern western humans, finally have a book of their own that is sympathetic to their cause. (Although I doubt few will ever read it.) Palladino cites the social injustices teens face, reminds us how short a time the word "teenager" has been in our cultural lexicon, and studies the way teens have thought, spoken, acted, and influenced popular society throughout time. This is an unexpectedly scholarly yet interesting book that takes the time to go out on a limb and side with the rebellious youth among us, and also to speculate on how the teen years are changing and how they might ultimately be in the near future. I liked Teenagers: An American History well enough to buy a copy after I'd finished the one I happened to get from the local library.

A promising book that needs better fact checking

I am teaching a course on the history of youth this semester. I read Palladino's entertaining book when considering adopting it for my course. In the end, I passed on the book because of some sloppy research in the first chapter. For example, Palladino begins her book by telling the story of Alfred Fondler (age 23) a man who slapped "a teenage girl" at a movie theater. Palladino uses this narrative to stake out major themes of her book: the changing cultural meaning of "teenager" and youth culture and resistance. Yet, the facts are fudged in her opening anecdote. The woman in question who was slapped--Margaret Schultz--was 24 years old, a year older than her assailant. The newspaper articles that describe Schultz as a "girl" do so because adult women were often infantalized. Violence against Schultz, moreover, was sanctioned not because Schultz was young but because she was female.
Because a casual fact checking of Palladino's first footnote reveal this kind of error, I worried about what a more careful analysis would find. In the end, I used a series of articles.
I hope a second edition of this book will have more careful fact checking because this text has a lot of promise and will be a valuable resource for students.

Dr Thankamma V Ajithkumar MD, FRCP, FRCR, MBA is at present a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. Previous to that he was a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Bristol Haematology & Oncology Centre, and a Specialist Registrar in Clinical Oncology at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge. He has also lectured in clinical oncology at the Regional Cancer Centre in Kerala, India, and was employed as Assistant Professor there.

Dr Adrian Harnett MRCP, FRCP, is at present a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, having previously been a Consultant Clinical Oncologist at the Beatson Oncology Centre, Glasgow. He is very involved in teaching, having served on various committees of the Royal College of Radiologists for many years and at present is an examiner for the final part of the FRCR.

Tom Roques trained as a clinical oncologist in London and Vancouver. He has been a consultant in Norwich since 2004 and Clinical Director there since 2009. He specializes in head and neck and thyroid cancers and has particular interests in technical radiotherapy and in doctor-patient communication.

Culture of Wood Review

This book was recommended to me and I ordered it because the other reviews I read were quite good. This is a beautiful book. I traveled in Japan and saw a few of the things that are topics addressed in the book. When I saw these things, I did not always understand the background behind them. This book presents that, particularly for the architectural topics (bridges and temples, etc.). While it speaks of these wooden things and how they are made, the technical aspects of their fabrication are not dwelt upon extensively. The title of the book is quite appropriate. It is a discussion of the way that wood and the appreciation of fine wooden things weave their ways through Japanese culture. The topical elements (wooden objects) dealt with are generally held in high cultural esteem and enjoy almost a kind of reverence. The book deals with how similar items have been made historically and introduces artisans and craftsmen that engage in these activities today. It describes their work with grace. It is a gentle book and a peaceful read. It is not a book to necessarily read cover-to-cover but is enjoyable on a topic by topic basis.

Fighting against the Tide

In this modern age of plastics and exotic metal alloys along with mass production, the idea of creating a comb out of wood, or small storage boxes out of thin wooden slats, or carving a thin-walled bowl, seems quaint and even silly. We would expect furniture woodworkers and carpentry in constructing houses, but splitting wood by hand and trimming with small hand saws question efficiency. However, in modern Japan there are still handfuls of artisans engaged in such and similar crafts. They fight the tide of modernization by being the preservationists of Buddhist and Shinto temples, monuments and shrines, and tea houses. They also produce those traditional utensils still valued for form and craft.

This fine illustated book honors the cottage industry and its aging craftmen, who maintain the skills and techniques and still train apprentices. Anyone familiar with Chinese interlocking wooden puzzles will appreciate how large buildings were and still today are constructed entirely out of wood, without nails. We see in detail how this is done, from securing the necessary timber, to its aging in lumber yards, to carving and fitting. From bridges and buildings to wooden dolls and wooden sandals, to musical instruments and game boards, we learn the complex techniques and soon appreciate the patience and craftsmanship. Japanese design, both ancient and modern, is renown for its elegance. This book, a survey and sampling, gives us greater understanding. We also discover that these works and projects in wood are expensive, due in part to the rarity and specialization of such skills and the intricate steps of labor and the time required. The book would be of interest to woodworkers, those interested in Japanese arts and crafts, and anyone who loves wood.

About the Author
Gary Thibodeau is Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. He received his Ph.D. from South Dakota State University as well as an M.S. in Enzyme Kinetics, and an M.S. in Anatomy also from South Dakota State University. His B.S. is from Creighton State University. Gary is widely published in addition to his McGraw-Hill text, Athletic Injury Assessment. Gary enjoys teaching and encouraging learning.

A Huge Help With Homework

This is a heavy book. Even though my son's school provided a copy for him, we
are glad to have the this extra copy at home for his use. As for content I can't really
rate this but I do like the way this book is written and organized, especially the vocabulary.
Also, the diagrams are well detailed.

Apologia has published yet another excellent science textbook. This is a thorough study of anatomy at a high school level with full-color photos, labs that actually work, links for extra study, and an easy conversational tone. My students prefer the Apologia science books over other home study books we have tried (Abeka, Glencoe, Harcourt, BJU).

Monsters, witches, magic...what's not to love about Halfway Dead?! This is the first book I've read by Terry Maggert and definitely, DEFINITELY, won't be my last. I found Terry's characters to be original and his story to be both charming and unique. I think the one thing I'd like to point out is that his writing is what I consider "smart" writing, my favorite kind. There are brow-raising references, eloquently-written paragraphs and laugh out loud lines that make this book a page-turner. Please do yourself a favor and check this one out. Magic, Waffles, and Vikings.

Magic runs in Carlie McEwan's blood, literally. In the tiny town of Halfway, deep in the Adirondack mountains, Carlie carries on the family tradition, never coming right out and saying she's a witch, but accepting the letters asking for help from the townfolk - as long as the envelope and paper is handmade and plain and the ink from the forest or natural world, and they must mean no harm.

When she's not helping people with beneficial spells, Carlie makes the worlds best waffles and kills things that go bump in the night, like Wendigo's.

When Carlie is approached by a stranger looking for a guide into the woods, her first instinct is to say no. Until she's shown the picture of a half circle of American chestnut trees, a variety thought to be extinct. That's not what holds Carlie's interest. There's something about that half circle. Something familiar about the tumble of stones behind it.

And it's Carlie's gran who knows why. It's an old family story, one past due to be wrapped up.

The magic in Halfway Dead is more in line with the natural world. Enough so that I was surprised when a vampire turned up with talk of werewolves and shifters. The forest teems with a full compliment of fae and that forest is every bit as much a character as the people in the story.

There was a potential bad guy and a string of murders that are mentioned, but never develop into anything Carlie has to worry about. The end of the story comes quickly and gives us a peek at what the direction the next book might take. Shifters, a missing girl, and an amorous vampire - oh my! I look forward to the next Halfway book.

Waffles and magic are a great combination!

I give this book a 5 out of 5 stars for characters, interesting plot lines, cover design, memorable lines, and for Terry writing such a memorable and amazing story!

Carlie is a white witch. And even though I know absolutely nothing about witchcraft, I found myself enthralled by the descriptions of how her magic was a piece of herself. She didn't come off as entitled or uppity because she had power, but instead loved being a down-to-earth cook at the local diner. She really reminded me of Dean Koontz's "Odd Thomas," which is one of my favorite books of all time.

The story was enthralling and drew me in immediately. If I didn't have a job, husband, or kids, I would've read the story straight through! Curse you, responsibilities!

Memorable lines were placed naturally throughout the book. I won't spoil any that relate to direct plot points, but these are a few of my favorites:

"Even sitting, he towered over me, but not in threatening way, unless you consider good customer service to be a menace to your person. I did not, so I smiled."

"when my hair gets crazy, it becomes an alien life form that can threaten cities."
Carlie is full of great lines and passion for her craft. Imagery of the moon and scenery puts the reader directly into the story.

SO, to sum up, if you like waffles, magic, evil, the moon, love, deceit, and just an all-around great read, pick up "Halfway Dead" by Terry Maggert!

What's not to love??

Monsters, witches, magic, a super cool heroine, a witty grandmother and food references…what’s not to love about Halfway Dead?! This is the first book I’ve read by Terry Maggert and definitely, DEFINITELY, won’t be my last. I found Terry’s characters to be original, well fleshed out and relatable, and his story to be both charming and unique. I think the one thing I’d like to point out is that his writing is what I consider “smart” writing, my favorite kind. There are brow-raising references, eloquently-written paragraphs and laugh out loud lines that make this book a page-turner. Please do yourself a favor and check this one out. It’s an engaging story that has me waiting impatiently for book 2! Bravo, Mr. Maggert!

About the Author
Daniel J. Giaccio, MD is the Program Director of Residency and the Medicine Clerkship Director at Lutheran Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.

Carla McWilliams, MD, attended medical school at Medical University of the Americas in Nevis, and graduated in 2006. She has worked at Kaplan Medical in the Curriculum Department as an Associate Director of Curriculum for the past year and a half, running various projects with a leading role in the Step 2 CK revision in 2007. During this time she was a contributing author to the Pediatric Step Two Lecture Notes and a contributing editor in both the Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Internal Medicine Step 2 CK Lecture Notes. She is currently an Internal Medicine Resident at Lutheran Medical Center in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, an affiliate of SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She took the USMLE Step Three Exam in April 2008 and scored extremely high.

White Coat Pocket Guide (Giaccio, McWilliams) vs. Master the Boards (Fischer, Reichert)

I'm sure many of you are wondering which book to choose: White Coat Pocket Guide or Master the Boards. Both are very good books and make great reviews for both Step 3 as well as Step 2. Nevertheless, White Coat Pocket Guide wins! The helpful algorithms and stronger focus on mechanism of action makes this book amazing. This book is also great for Step 2 because it incorporates pathophysiology, diagnosis, and next step in management, whereas Master the Boards only incorporates diagnosis and next step in management. Master the boards is also lacking strength in such things as arrhythmias and hematology/oncology, whereas this book pulls through strongly in both! White Coat Pocket Guide is overall very helpful and I would recommend it to anyone taking Step 2 as well as Step 3. In my opinion, I would choose White Coat Pocket Guide over Master the Boards.

I love this book and actually kept reading (to learn and not just to memorize) out of interest. This was golden for Step 2 and I will definitely re-read it for Step 3. LOADS better than First Aid...I cannot stress that enough!

Very concise and useful for quick review or quick reference

I bought this book recently as I'm going to prepare for step 3. I found this book is full of clear, concise, valuable and latest facts in 439 pages. Many thanks to authors and Kaplan to make such a useful book available. The size of printed words is comfortable to read; not too small like other pocket books. You can also have a few spaces at some pages to write down additional facts if you want to. This pocket guide will be also useful during on call and on duty for quick reference.
