Great practical companion to Racing Weight

I purchased and read racing weight and then this book, which I believe is more of a companion and not a stand alone product. If you want to get the most out of this book, read Racing Weight first. Racing weight provides a very sound evidenced-based rationale for how and why shedding extra pounds can help improve performance. The quick start guide provides very concrete steps for how to put that into action. Since I already had a fairly high level of cardiovascular fitness, I followed a hybrid version between the low and high volume plans for runners for 8 weeks and had excellent results. Since I am a runner and I only really closely read and followed the plan for runners, my review will focus on that aspect. I will also mention that I am an exercise physiologist and am reviewing this from not only that perspective but that as a consumer, since as a runner, I'm always looking for new ways to augment my training and have struggled to loose the weight I have expected to while training. Nutrition is also not my area of expertise, so I am always looking for good resources in this area.

I modified the plan to fit my needs but I really followed it very closely. As stated in the book it was VERY hard to get 30% of my intake in protein every day - I mostly hit the 20-25% mark, however. I also did not give up diet soda. I drew the line there! I did follow just about every other aspect very closely. I never did actually calculate my DQS, but rather shot to get the prescribed kcal with the correct protein% and take in as many high-quality foods as I could each day. Had I followed that part more religiously, I likely could have lost a bit more weight, but I struggle with carbohydrate cravings so I was still thrilled with the results. In the end over 8 weeks, I lost 10 lb of pure body fat and my running performance has dramatically improved. I don't think it can be overstated the importance of just focusing on weight loss rather than performance and implementing this plan during an off-season training cycle.

Among the stand out aspects of the book are promoting what I call "strength intervals" or doing hill work rather than speed work to build strength without risking injury and fasted long runs. Although I'm not sure it really helps you loose weight per-se, I think it helps boost beta-oxidation capacity and promote glycogen sparing when you do hit your performance training cycle. Also doing some high intensity work on the cycle as a cross-training tool is an excellent, excellent tool to boost high-intensity training volume without putting yourself and increased risk of injury.

My primary criticisms and where I didn't give this book 5 stars is that Mr. Fitzgerald failed to mention all the other physiologic and metabolic factors that will work against one loosing weight and the pitfalls of that (compensatory lower spontaneous activity etc.) and failed to provide any strategies for overcoming these factors. Its not just a simple math formula (kcal in - kcal out) as he would leave one to believe however infinitely more complicated! In addition some of the exercises described did not make sense in the progression he provided and have no gender specificity. For instance there is a leg curl exercise and inverted pushups exercise that I still cannot do nor can anyone that I've asked to perform these exercises, and they were introduced in week 1 of the program! I'm wondering if he did any test cases of these exercises with recreational athletes?

That being said if you are a runner or other endurance athlete and you've been struggling to loose weight, thinking it will just come off as you increase your mileage, STOP, read Racing Weight and follow this guide and you will have some very positive results. Going through this process will also help shape your thinking moving forward about nutritional choices beyond the weight loss cycle.

Not as good as the original, but still helpful

The original Racing Weight is a phenomenal book with an incredible amount of information backed up by hard data. This book starts off with a watered-down recap of Racing Weight, followed by a few meal plans and advice for losing weight. It is designed for the "off-season" which I did not know at the time of purchase, and is probably part of the reason I didn't find it too helpful. Additionally, I would have loved to see more vegetarian plans. The author admits to finding it difficult to get enough protein (30%) without overdoing calories in his one vegetarian plan; providing a bit more guidance would have been even more useful for me.
I'll probably go back to this book in the winter, when I'm not training quite as hard as I am now, and maybe it will help me even more than the original book already has. However, if you are thinking of purchasing this book and have not already read Racing Weight, I *highly* recommend buying that one before (or instead of) this one.

Awesome book

I'm a long distance runner/cyclist and struggle with weight loss. While I am not overweight, I do find it difficult to lose weight while maintaining high mileage(who doesn't want to be as light as possible for better performance?). This book is great. While I understand what I need to do to lose and how to balance my nutritional needs, this guy tells you EXACTLY what to do in this book- no thinking required. You can just follow a selected meal plan and training regimen and bada bing: weight loss while maintaining fitness. I love it. I've already lost 4 pounds after two weeks. I'm following the plan to the letter. If I could give this book 6 stars I would. The only thing I would recommend is adding a section for duathletes. But I was able to create a hybrid training regimen from the book's high volume cycling and high volume running chapters and it is working great. Thanks so much for writing this companion to the other Racing Weight book.

A great tale of Colonial America

This is a fantastic series by Donald Clayton Porter that describes the life of "Renno" the fictional Seneca Warrior that is also a "white" man. The series begins in the 1670's when Colonial America was beginning to branch out from the American Coastline.
Renno, becomes the adopted son of the great "Ghonka", the main Chief/Warrior of the Iroqouis Confederacy. Renno grows to become a skillful warrior, leader, and emissary between the Colonial Americans and his people. Porter may have simplified and added some "tall tales" to this fictional series, however, it does not distract the reader one bit.
Renno's adventures, dealings with his Indian family and his relations with the Colonial Americans is interesting and I dare say "quite a page-turning". This is the first novel in a large series that tells about Renno's life and the generations after him.
The early books are long out of print, however if you ever have an opportunity to find the books, I can tell you that you will not be dissapointed in the least! This is a series that needs to be re-issued so other fans of historical fiction can enjoy this fine author's tales.

The Colonization of America series is a gripping tale of the beginnings of America. Over all the story spans many generations of particular families.

The story is fast pace but flows seamlessly from event to event and is very well written. I would strongly recommend this book and this series to everyone interested in the historical fiction genre. This is a powerfully moving series that only gets better as you move along and get further engrained in the story.

Remarkable

I read 10 of the Series when they first came out in the 80's and thourghly enjoyed them all! The books give a great description of our country and the Seneca Indians and the horrific lives they lead. I highly recommend the "White Indian Series". Although I enjoyed all of the books that I read of these series my personal favorite,as I recall, was "Renegade". Donald Clayton Porter, the author, did a fantastic job on his description of the Indians. I hope that everyone that reads these books will get as much enjoyment out of them as I did. Cleanwaters06

About the Author
Carol Ptak, CFPIM, CIRM, is a partner with the Demand Driven Institute, and was most recently at Pacific Lutheran University as Visiting Professor and Distinguished Executive in Residence. Ms. Ptak is a past president of APICS, and has authored several books on MRP, enterprise resource planning (ERP), Lean, and TOC.

This is what the Material and Production planners were waiting for !

Demand Driven MRP is not just another book about old concepts, it is a study book to become a Certified Demand Driven Planner (CDDP). The book shows the long journey of Chad Smith and Carol Ptak in dealing with problems of traditional Material Requirements Planning (MRP). I was caught by the message of DDMRP during the APICS conferences in the US.

Although I have read white papers and other materials about DDMRP, this book gives a comprehensive view of managing the flow of materials and products inside the company as well as between nodes in supply chains.
The authors start with a brief reflection on traditional MRP as it currently is still part of numerous Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to control the production processes aimed at delivering the right products on time to the customers.

The main problem with MRP in traditional environments is that it is not compatible anymore with increasingly dynamic environments (such as shorter product life cycles, more severe competition, longer transportation lines, more demanding customers, more diverse customer segmentation). The problem with traditional MRP is that it makes all items below the master scheduled end items dependent on variations in demand for individual products. This means that on the different levels of the structure of a product, demand becomes dependent on the volatility of demand for end items. When companies have many individual products, each with their own variability, the complexity may explode to lower levels of the bill of material.

The effect of volatility is that it changes from speeding up deliveries of lower level components to delaying production or purchasing because of shifting priorities. All variation comes with a cost of expedited shipments, material shortages that hinder production processes and delays that contribute to high levels of work in process. This variability is the main cause of the bi-modal distribution of inventory: too many of the wrong products and too little of the goods you need for servicing your customer.

This book makes clear how inventory could be strategically placed on the lead time line (manufacturing lead time and purchasing lead time) in order to create buffers. It clearly demonstrates how lead time for end products and components can be decoupled, so they cannot have a disturbing effect, often called; the bullwhip effect. The book shows methods to how inventory can be located at strategically defined places, and at the same time save money that is invested in inventory. As inventory is the operations management contribution to the amount of working capital employed, lower inventories can directly contribute to the higher return on working capital. At the same time, lower levels of working capital give the opportunity to invest the savings in more profitable activities.
Demand Driven MRP shows that the concept is about planning availability of materials, but it is also an instrument for execution, by showing what materials are actual to be ordered at suppliers or manufacturing. DDMRP planning works with management of buffers (decoupled items) and management of lead times for the non-buffered items. Each buffer consists of three zones, colored red, yellow and green. The red zone consists of safety, but is very different from safety stock in MRP, because all levels of inventory, including safety are dynamically updated and actively used by the planners and purchasers.

The book focuses on the attention to maintaining flow from the perspective of materials and products including distribution inventory, but also involves capacity constraints (bottlenecks) in manufacturing, purchasing and distribution. For these, the method is about planning the material flow by using the ‘ net flow equation’, but also on controlling actual inventory per product and component in the execution phase.

The book gives tools to calculate the effect of strategically placed buffers and dynamic adjustments and compare this by the inventory investment using traditional MRP. This makes the method very trustworthy.

I agree with the authors that the concept is very intuitive for professionals in material and production planning. Implementing the thoughts and concepts in the organization requires an organization-wide acceptance in order to take full advantage.

Carol Ptak and Chad Smith continue to bring relevant methodology to the world of manufacturing and planning. This methodology and the principles of DDMRP solve many, if not all, of the problems we face in manufacturing. And, it extends to distribution and other industries as well. This book clearly illustrates what is wrong with the methods we are using today, then proceeds with a comprehensive solution that builds on many of the basic principles that we all use today. A must read for all those who are dependent upon MRP and for those manufacturers who think they don't need MRP.

The next step in Supply Chain evolution

Original MRP concepts were brilliant and revolutionized manufacturing, but the methods were never built to cope with the volatility of the modern world. This is a must read for those looking to learn more about DDMRP and how it can improve your supply chain. Expanding upon the ideas first set out in Orlicky's Material Requirements Planning 3rd Edition, this does a very good job of explaining how DDMRP works. It has a great chapter on linking DDMRP with S&OP. In 20 years, I believe most companies and software will have replaced traditional MRP methods with DDMRP.

Fire safety regulations in many countries require Fire Risk Assessment to be carried out for buildings such as workplaces and houses in multiple occupation. This duty is imposed on a "Responsible Person" and also on any other persons having control of buildings in compliance with the requirements specified in the regulations. Although regulations only require a qualitative assessment of fire risk, a quantitative assessment is an essential first step for performing cost-benefit analysis of alternative fire strategies to comply with the regulations and selecting the most cost-effective strategy. To facilitate this assessment, various qualitative, semi-quantitative and quantitative techniques of fire risk assessment, already developed, are critically reviewed in this book and some improvements are suggested. This book is intended to be an expanded version of Part 7: Probabilistic risk assessment, 2003, a Published Document (PD) to British Standard BS 7974: 2001 on the Application of Fire Safety Engineering Principles to the Design of Buildings. Ganapathy Ramachandran and David Charters were co-authors of PD 7974 Part 7. Quantitative Risk Assessment in Fire Safety is essential reading for consultants, academics, fire safety engineers, fire officers, building control officers and students in fire safety engineering. It also provides useful tools for fire protection economists and risk management professionals, including those involved in fire insurance underwriting.

More of an "invitation" than a "reference manual"

The Brown-Driver-Briggs is much more than a dictionary.

Although I agree with the reviewers who regret that this edition doesn't have the Hebrew-English index in the back, I never even thought to look for this in all my years of owning this dictionary until I read a review saying it was missing.

Here is a brief summary of what you get in the BDB, as it is most commonly abbreviated, and some things you need to know.

Learning to use the BDB is often included in many Hebrew coursebooks, since it is almost like learning a language in itself.

First of all, the words are NOT listed in alphabetical order. They are listed in alphabetical order under the HEADING OF THE ROOT. So, every word which is formed from the root "KTV" (such as Miktav, Ktav, and Ktovah) will be listed in alphabetical order starting with the root itself (prefixed by the "root" symbol borrowed from math), "√כתב," in the "Kaf" section. So knowing how to identify the root consonants of a word is a must before you can use this dictionary.

However, this is an essential skill for understanding any Semitic language anyway, since Hebrew, Arabic, or Aramaic word meanings are just vowel shapes and helper prefixes, with a consonant-based meaning.

Secondly, you will need a reference grammar like Gesenius handy in order to understand what Brown Driver Briggs is telling you about the word. The grammatical information given is very specific and often includes unusual forms such as Hithpa'al and Hothpalel.

Thirdly, when you first look up a root, you will see it compared with its Semitic equivalents in Arabic, Aramaic, Akkadian, Syriac, and Ge'ez (ancient Ethiopian), as well as the occasional Ancient Egyptian or Coptic word. So knowing the Arabic alphabet is a good introduction to being able to use the Comparative Semitics tools the dictionary offers.

Right now I am learning the Ethiopian alphabet (called the Ge'ez Fidel) and the Syriac script (the BDB lists Syriac words in the Serto (western Syriac) script, as opposed to Estrangelo (eastern Syriac)). Akkadian and Egyptian words are not listed in cuneiform/heiroglyph form, but instead are written in English-letter transcription.

Fourthly, there are many, many abbreviations used in the dictionary. Almost all of these abbreviations are explained in the front of the book, right after the Preface. It might be handy to put a sticky marker there, or a bookmark, for easy flipping back and forth to look up an abbreviation.

Fifthly, Greek is used throughout the dictionary. The most common example is the letter "ψ" used to abbreviate "Psalms." However, words or phrases in Greek are not uncommon. Less common are Latin and German insertions or titles of books.

Sixthly, the dictionary is rife with Scriptural references illustrating the various forms and usages of the word.

Seventh, manuscript names are also included. This information can be ignored by the beginner (I do.) These are the funny looking symbols such as old Fraktur-style German letters in a big font sometimes followed by a Greek word.

Eighth, the definitions of the words are usually written in italics, interspersed among all the complicated symbols and Scriptural references found under each listing.

Because the BDB is so complicated, it is extremely useful. It is also just one volume, as opposed to 6-volume sets like some dictionaries, meaning it is accessible to the beginner.

Some people are overwhelmed by the complicated information presented in the BDB. They know the Hebrew alphabet, but don't know how to identify the root of a word. Or they don't speak any other Semitic or scholarly language other than Hebrew, so all the comparative Semitics data is useless to them. For such students, a pocket dictionary might be more useful and much easier to use.

I want a deep understanding of the Hebrew Bible. With all the raging controversies surrounding its origins and meaning, I find it extremely useful to have so much information accessible about the etymologies of words and the comparison with other Semitic languages. I feel like if I can learn to read these other languages, I will be able to understand the hidden story behind Scripture which has been so hotly pursued ever since the birth of High Criticism in Germany in the late 1800s. So the BDB feels like an invitation to me, showing me in an attractive visual format the various important elements of Comparative Semitics and textual criticism with which I must become familiar if I want to have a deep understanding of the Hebrew Text and form an opinion about its origins.

Missing Pages

I thought this was a good deal, and was very helpful in class, until today when we went to look up a word and found that pages 395-426 were miss entirely from the book. Of course, discovering this is far past the return date, so I can't really do anything about it. I would warn you to check to make sure all the pages are present and return it if it's missing any. Otherwise, it is exactly what it's supposed to be.

I ordered the in February 2014. I am very familiar with using the BDB Lexicon as a reference tool as I am studying and teaching myself Hebrew. I was cautious because of some of the 1-star comments that claimed the text was poorly copied and hard to read, or that a group of pages were missing. I finally took a chance and ordered the book.

I was very pleased to find the book has wonderfully printed pages - realize that the original is over 100 years ago so the type setting font is more compressed than currently preferred. The ink to page contrast is very readable; it is not hard to read. All the pages appear present. The missing pages comments must be from a particular printing mistake. All three indexes, Strongs # to BDB, Hebrew verb roots to BDB and Aramaic verb roots to BDB, are found at the back of the text. To top everything off, the tan and green hard cover looks beautiful.

This book is accurately represented. The price was incredibly affordable. I would recommend this to anyone wanting their own copy of the BDB Hebrew-English Lexicon.

So, I get it, this book was probably written with the young family in mind. Umm, I'm NOT! I love saving and finding better ways to stretch my budget. Come one, who doesn't need a lift to their lifestyle? Jill addresses ways to be more organized and how to save, how to LIVE within our means and make it work, never feel like you're doing without. I've take a couple of great tips from this book and adapted them into my life. I was referred to this book by a friend and really need to remind them I appreciate that they pointed me in this direction :)
