This book provides a comprehensive guide both to the techniques used to obtain radiographs of the horse, and to radiographic interpretation. The second edition has been significantlyenlarged to include new information and many additional illustrations. With over 480 superb annotated radiographs and more than 100 interpretive line diagrams, the book combines the best features of a high quality atlas with those of a detailed textbook.

It presents the normal radiographic anatomy of the immature and mature horse, with normal variations, incidental findings and details of significant abnormalities. About the Author
Jan Butler
Jan has specialized in equine radiography and has 30 years experience in this field. In 1975 she joined the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket where she gained considerable experience working with many internationally renewed veterinary surgeons. Since 1997 she has been working in private practice at the Willesley Equine Clinic in Gloucestershire.

Chris Colles
Chris Colles qualified from the Royal Veterinary College, London in 1971. After 3 years in mixed practice (where he obtained a Part I Diploma in Radiology) he joined the Animal Health Trust as a clinician in 1975. He was awarded a PhD for work on Navicular Disease in 1981, and has carried out research in many areas of Equine Orthopaedic and radiology, having a particular interest in the horse’s foot. In 1988 he returned to practice, where he is a senior partner in Avonvale Veterinary Group, specializing in equine orthopaedics. He is recognized by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons as a Specialist in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery. Chris was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Worshipful Company of Farriers in 2000 in recognition of his research into conditions of the foot, and involvement with farriery education.

Sue Dyson
After qualifying from the University of Cambridge in 1980, Sue worked for a year at New Bolton Center, University of Pennsylvania, and then spent a year in private practice in Pennsylvania. Sue then joined the Centre for Equine Studies of the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, where she has specialized in lameness diagnosis and diagnostic imaging. Sue is recognized as a specialist in Equine Orthopaedics by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons and holds the RCVS diploma in Equine Orthopaedics. She has published widely on lameness, radiography ultrasonography, nuclear scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging.

Svend Kold
Svend qualified in 1981 in Copenhagen. He then spent over 10 years at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, where he completed his thesis on femoro-tibial subchondral bone cysts. After a sabbatical year at Colorado State University he joined the Willesley Equine Clinic, Gloucestershire, where he is now a partner. He specializes in lameness and orthopaedic surgery and is recognized as a Specialist in Equine Orthopaedic Surgery by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. His time is spent mostly at the clinic seeing first opinion and referral cases. He published regularly on orthopaedic subjects.

Paul Poulos
Following graduation from the University of California at Davis in 1960, Paul founded a private practice. In 1972 he returned to Davis to specialize in radiology where he was awarded Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiology. He moved to the Royal Veterinary College of Stockholm, Sweden and was awarded a Veterinary Medicine Doctorate (PhD) for his thesis on osteochondrosis in 1977. He was Associate Professor at Radiology at the University of Utrecht, and on return to the USA, was Professor of Radiology at University of Florida. From 1983, he was chairman of the Department of Radiology. In 1990 Paul left academe to establish his own consulting practice, Poulos Veterinary Imaging, based in Ukiah, California. He has published widely on osteochondrosis, navicular disease and diseases of the fetlock.

A MUST FOR EVERY EQUINE VETERINARIAN

I am a private Equine veterinarian whom has been actively involved in Equine practice since I graduated in 1986. I have gone through this book in various places as I have not been able to own one for some unknown reason and my first impression of it was it is a must for every Equine Veterinarian. It contains alot of valuble information.Now thanks to the Distance Learning Programme in Equine Surgery, conducted by the Post-Graduate Foundation, University of Sdyney under Dr.Nick Kannegieter, I was able to get this book as it comes highly recommended in this programme.

Reading is good, however typical Kindergarteners cannot usually read this much ...

These are not worksheets the average kindergartener in public school can do by themselves. Especially in the beginning of the year. There are multiple problems on each page with different directions to follow for each one. They need to read quite a bit to solve the problem. Reading is good, however typical Kindergarteners cannot usually read this much within the first semester of school. If I was to pass this out, I would have to read each one aloud and we would have to go together or they would be coming up to me for every problem. This seems more like first grade to me. I sent it back.

Great for teachers and homeschoolers! !

I use these books for homeschooling to start off each of the required 180 days. It helps me to keep track of how many days we have done and it allows me to see what we have done in math each day. Each page has different types of problems, so the kids don't get bored. They are truly grade appropriate work. The additional CD is nice, so you can print out pages again and have a file on hand. These would be truly great for "morning work" activities for teachers.
Would definitely buy these each year. I just with they made them for spelling, language arts science. etc.

Fun and engaging for budding scholars

Bought for my daughter - she loves doing the exercises, something I've had problems with in other activity books. Each page has a pattern of 6 activities that are consistent in their theme from page to page. Some are easy for her, but some are getting more challenging (which is good). Highly recommend.

This is a beautiful translation of India's great scripture.

The Upanishads, translated by Juan Mascaro, is a beautiful translation, which, like Mascaro's translation of The Bhagavid Gita, breathes simplicity and purity throughout. The Upanishads are maxims on the spiritual life, and are poetry, scripture, guidance all in one. "The truth is hidden by a circle of gold. Unveil the truth, oh God of light, that I might see!" "It is not for the love of the husband that the husband is dear, but for the soul that is in the husband." "Behold, all that lives and walks on earth. Leaving the transient, take refuge in the eternal, set not your heart on another's possession. Working thus, a man can wish for a life of one hundred years. Only actions done in God, bind not the heart of man." (I paraphrase). This collection is truly wonderful, and should be a part of everyone's spiritual library, along with the major scriptures of all the world's faiths.

A Purist Blushes

I first read the Upanishads at age 14, ploughing through the complete literal translation by Swami Nikhilânanda with its incessant footnotes and daunting commentaries. I had heard that the Brhadâranyaka Upanishad was the oldest, so I thought I should read that first. Bad choice. All the older Upanishads are packed with unexplained references to Vedic ritual, to archaic cosmologies and models of the body. I was fascinated but understood perhaps 1%.

A year later I found the Penguin Classic translated by Juan Mascaró and light shone on my mind. I suddenly understood what it was all about. His eloquent words opened a door for me, I went through and I have never gone back.

I now own 8 translations of the Upanishads, partial or complete, and I have read a number of others. Even with no Sanskrit, I can see Mascaró's versions for what they are: old-fashioned, Romantic, poetic paraphrases. My current Penguin says, First published 1965, but portions of these translations were printed under the title "Himalayas of the Soul" as early as 1938. Mascaró was writing in the era that gave us World War II, the Holocaust, Stalin's Purges, and yet in spirit he dwells with Wordsworth, Blake and Shelley, the Spanish mystics, Shakespeare and the translators of the King James Version.

I am known as a purist, a stickler, a nit-picker. Take the Mundaka Upanishad, 3:1,1. Mascaró translates, "Two birds, two sweet friends, dwell on the self-same tree". Others have, "Two birds, always united..." or "Two birds, close companions..." Mascaró has merely added the unjustified, unnecessary, weak and gooey word "sweet"... yet somehow I don't mind.

Useless for any scholarly purposes, this is still probably the best version for the general reader. Despite his atrocious liberties, Mascaró has got the heart of the matter. If you become deeply interested of course you will go on to read other translations: this book includes only short excerpts from the longer Upanishads. If you don't know these works, they are the world's oldest spiritual writings and have never been surpassed, or equalled. They are poetic, full of imagery rather than philosophy, and once read are never forgotten.

Nice to know that some things that you have, or may have, experienced, have been around for over 2,500 years. This mind expanding translation can help one to regain focus and balance in today's much too hectic living. Putting the trivial in perspective, this is one that is not only useful in everyday life, but will stick with you forever; and then some . . .

From the Author
Hans Weisshaar and I took on the big project of Violin Restoration because there had never been a comprehensive working manual written in our field. Nine years, 42 chapters of step-by-step instruction and 18 patterns later, it was available in the summer of 1989. We thought that the 2000 copies we printed would satisfy the world market for restoration. What we had not realized is how much of it can be applied in new making and in everyday "set up" work-- making bridges, planing fingerboards, etc.
So as the years have passed, proprietors of shops that sell trumpets as well as violins have been asked by their string repairmen to invest in this book. It is heartwarming to see that as we intended, our book is really turning out to be what we had hoped it would be--a gift to our craft.

A must have.

There are certain books in the world of violin making and repair that have become standard texts; Heron-Allen's "Violin Making as it was and is" being the most obvious. This book deserves to rank alongside these older works both because of the range of work covered and the consumate skill shown. This is a workshop book and not just armchair reading. The only caveat is that no single text can cover all the problems that may be encountered in violin repair and this should not be treated as the last word on the subject, rather it should be used as a springboard for developing good technique and an inspiration for the repairer to solve problems in innovative ways that the indivdual job may require.

A must for any restorer's library.

As a violin restorer and maker, I have found this book to be indispensible. The thorough, step-by-step instructions and crystal clear photos are the best reference material available to date. Contains all of the most common damage types and multiple methods for approaching each repair. The only drawback is that some of the methods and materials described are either dated or no longer available.

An excellent guide and foundation to repairs for violin makers, but I wouldn't rely on it completely

A great book for an experienced luthier who wants to do complicated and professional repairs, however some of the information is misleading and in a few cases downright bad. Just forget about removing a violin neck in the first way the book suggests, by hitting the scroll with your palm. And some of the ideas presented for set-up are pretty strange, like using complicated jigs to discover the optimal height and slant for a cello's fingerboard position. And don't use sandarac as a crack filler, it will craquelure very badly in the near future. And don't remove stubborn glue with highly-toxic-varnish-dissolving-you-need-a-permit-to-get-it compounds.

That said, this book really is filled with a lot of wisdom, and makes for a great foundation for high-quality repair work. Just be careful, because I don't think I would rely on all of this 100%.

Like all books on metrics, PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security makes the statement that "you can't manage what you can't measure".  The authors claim that other books on information security metrics discuss number theory and statistics in academic terms. This title promises to be light on mathematics and heavy on utility and is meant as a how-to-do-it guide for security metrics.

As to the title, PRAGMATIC is an acronym for the basis of the method of the book, in using metrics that are predictive, relevant, actionable, genuine, meaningful, timely, independent and cost. After reading the first chapter, PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security looks like it may live up to its promise of being able to use metrics not only to track and report performance but to identify problem areas and opportunities, and drive information security improvements. If so, this could be the metrics book a lot of information security professionals have been waiting for.

A wealth of tools and inputs for anybody having to deal with metrics.

In the last few years the term "security metrics" has developed somewhat into a holy grail. Everybody wants them, everybody seems to know that they are necessary, but how the devil is the CISO or the IT department able to get them? As a result we were presented with ISO 27004, some NIST papers and others and the time of writing the term "security metrics" generates over 2.4m hits when googled and "information security metrics" over 990'000.
As a CISO I am need of security metrics myself but was always a little bit hesitant of delving deeper into the matter as some of the books I read about the topic seemed arcane and rather impractical for daily use. And now this book comes along, making the whole matter in my opinion much clearer and easier to handle.

In the first few chapters Brotby and Hinson provide an overview of the status quo and the why and how of security metrics. They deal with great insight with the differing methods and concepts, and the purpose of and audience for security metrics. Chapter 5 deals concisely with points actually to be measured and where one can find them. Throughout the language is very accessible, making this book a pleasure to read and work with.

In chapter 6 the authors then provide us with a thoughtful introduction to their PRAGMATIC approach which is followed by a chapter with over 150 information security metrics. All these metrics are explained in detail, are easy to understand and thus provide a practical tool ready to use for anybody in need of reference points what and how to "measure security".

The next chapter deals concisely with the "how to". The authors provide a clear and concise explanation of how to design an information security measurement system using their method. In just about 20 pages they manage to make clear what has to go into the system, which reference points are to be considered and how everything can be pulled together in order to be able to create a system which can be easily handled and worked with as required.

The final chapters then provide the readers with more information about using metrics in general and the system of Brotby and Hinson in particular. A case study shows the practical application of the PRAGMATIC system and the final pages provide once more a wealth of helpful tools.

In summary I would like to give the following verdict: Until now I have not come across a book about information security metrics that was so clearly and concisely written. The book is easy to understand and provides a wealth of tools and inputs for anybody having to deal with metrics.

The sample metrics and the very thoughtful insights regarding the creation of an information security metrics system tailor-made for the individual organization hopefully will make this book a standard work. It is clear that the authors have thought a lot about the subject and also have practical experience in the matter, as otherwise this tome would have turned out turgid and technological, something which it clearly is not.

Good guide for to develop an information security metrics program

Like all books on metrics, early in PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security authors Krag Brotby and Gary Hinson state that “you can't manage what you can't measure”.

The authors claim that other books on information security metrics discuss number theory and statistics in academic terms. This title promises to be light on mathematics and heavy on utility and is meant as a how-to-do-it guide for security metrics.

Based on that claim, the authors likely had a book such as Data-Driven Security: Analysis, Visualization and Dashboards by Jay Jacobs and Bob Rudis in mind. As Jacobs and Rudis do indeed use statistics extensively in their approach to security metrics.

As to the title, PRAGMATIC is an acronym for the basis of the method of the book, in using metrics that are predictive, relevant, actionable, genuine, meaningful, timely, independent and cost.

One of the benefits of the book is that it provides a method to create quantitative methods for risk, and how to estimate which resources to use to mitigate those identified risks

The authors note that as a consequence of the way the field of information security has developed from IT security, current practice in security metrics seems to be driving by the availability of raw data from firewalls and other systems. But when it comes to measuring security, many organizations completely ignore the nontechnical factors that are often of equal importance to managing information security in a manner that supports the firm’s business objectives. And that is precisely the gap the book is attempting to fix.

Chapter 7 makes up the bulk of the book when it details over 150 different useful metrics in which to use.

For those looking for a book in which to develop their information security metrics program, in PRAGMATIC Security Metrics: Applying Metametrics to Information Security is a valuable reference.

More than metrics

This books makes you think about metrics. It is applied to information security, but the line of thinking can easily be extended to many other fields of management. Before offering a rated choice of about 150 metrics, the authors explain a complete methodology on choosing and rating candidate metrics. A must read for those that produce KPI's for senior management, or for senior manager that want to be informed by useful indicators.

Enter Scott Speck and David Pogue, who take out the unnecessary mystery, and offer an easy-to-swallow quickie education, ranging from Gregorian chants to contemporary composers such as John Adams and John Corigliano. If you can't tell an oboe from a bassoon, there's also a dandy guide to the instruments of the orchestra, and once you're through that information you'll know the difference between a concerto and a sonata. Though musicians and other music lovers continue to lament the lack of classical music enthusiasts, their concern may have diminished somewhat over the last 25 years. The "Hooked on Classics" recording series, Peter Schickele (a.k.a. P.D.Q. Bach), the Three Tenors, and the movie Shine are but a few of the media phenomena that have popularized classical music. Lately, some authors have taken a lighthearted approach to the genre, hoping to make it less intimidating; Barry Scherer's delightful Bravo! A Guide to Opera for the Perplexed (LJ 11/15/96) is an example not to be overlooked. It does appear, however, that with these two books from IDG's ever-expanding "For Dummies" series, classical music has finally arrived. Orchestrator, synthesizer programmer, music copyist, and vocal arranger Pogue and symphony conductor Speck have collaborated to make musical facts fun to peruse. In some cases, the information may seem oversimplified, but novices will come away with a fairly good idea of the important composers, the main periods of music, the instruments, the conductors, the artists, when to applaud at a concert or opera, and even what to wear to a performance. Icons throughout pinpoint tips, advanced information, listening guides, when to use the accompanying CDs, and stories to use in conversations. The book to read to understand and enjoy classical music!

I've always loved all kinds of music but never really listened to or understood what's going on with classical music. This book was incredible. Just playing the CD that comes with the book and reading the section that walks you through each piece of music opened up a whole new world of music appreciation. With each piece they present possible interpretations of what the composer was actually trying to do/say. This combined with an explanation of the musical forms that they used make you realize that it's not just a random collection of musical phrases. There's very interesting things going on there! There's also a great history section covering all of the big names of classical music and there are plenty of musical recommendations to listen to throughout the book. This is just a great education in music (I've been a musician for 20 years and I still learned something!)

The free CD is wonderful and humor is very entertaining!

I bought this because I have been listening to classical music since I subscribed to Sirius XM and wanted to learn more about the music I am hearing and enjoying. Even though it is a topic I am interested in, I can imagine that simply reading about music could be dull. Not so with Classical Music for Dummies. Somehow they manage to get a lot of humor into the text of every one of these books making any topic fun to learn! I have purchased several For Dummies books, but this one especially has had my chuckling as I make my way through it. The 80 or so pages of the history of classical music and a short biography of all the most famous composers was exactly what I was hoping to get from a book on classical music. Knowing something about each ones adds quite a bit to the enjoyment of their compositions. The book came with a CD with selected pieces to illustrate several various forms of music. The pieces are absolutely beautiful and great start or addition to a classical collection. Chapter 5 guides you through the CD one musical piece at a time explaining how the composer put it together and what to expect from the piece. If you are considering buying a copy, I highly recommend it. The CD alone and the notes on it are well worth the price. And the humor makes for a few lovely and relaxing hours of reading.

humor overpowers the content

You have to be careful with the Dummies series. Some authors use humor with discretion, others, as in this case, lard on so much humor that it gets in the way of learning and turns what should be a pleasure into an ordeal of extracting the useful information from the attempt at clever wise-cracks, puns and general satire.

Yes, there is information here if you are willing to work to get it, but a good 50% of the text is gratuitous laughs. There are other books, such as "The Classical Music Experience" by Jacobson, that treat the reader as someone intelligent who seeks to know rather than to be entertained.

The best advice is to go to the library and look in the music appreciation section. You'll find many superior alternatives to this book.
