Great Six Sigma Roadmap

To non-believers, Six Sigma often seems to be a valhalla, inhabited by a mythic warrior caste (Black Belts) who communicate in a language few can devine.

Linsenmann and Harry take the mystery out of a Six Sigma deployment. They give real life examples with real life people to show how Six Sigma transformed the DuPont company.

This book does not dwell on p values or r squared correlation factors. And that is a good thing, since the specific tools of Six Sigma have been addressed in many other forums. Instead,the book addresses the more difficult question of how do you change the culture of a large organization to embrace Six Sigma. It addresses the organizational changes necessary for success and how DuPont in particular made those changes.

Low Budget Physics Book

The book has all of the information you need, with hand drawn diagrams. The author goes to great pains to thoroughly explain each concept. For the price, I would have expected a professional artist, with color pages and better paper quality, but when all is said and done, the author is good at explaining the concepts.

Different from other texts

When learning geometric optics, one usually learns concepts and equations using ordinary algebra. In this text, linear algebra is used. It gives the reader another way to manipulate problems than typically used. Highly recommended!

Nice but nothing new

As much as I like the author's "Building Construction", this book is not recommended. It is based on the premise that many construction details share common principles: shed water by using sloping surfaces, for instance. After a few such groupings are described, it turns into a tips and tricks collection, e.g., do rough work before finish work. It's not a comprehensive reference by any means. On the contrary, it's shamefully padded with many nearly blank pages. Enjoyable reading, nice drawings, just not nearly enough material to justify the price.

Concise and to the point!

This book is the recipe to designing architectural details. The book is divided into many small but concise sections each dealing with different aspects e.g, controlling water leakage, accommodating movements, providing structural support, forgiving details, etc. In each of these sections various solutions and stategies to deal with these aspects are shown with simple easy to understand diagrams accompanied by a brief explanation. A chapter at the end is dedicated to developing and designing the architectural details through choosing and combining solutions disscussed in the sections with illustrated examples.
This book is the essence to "designing" or merely to "understanding" architectural details. The structure and simplicity of this book makes it almost like a dictionary of architectural details. This book is suitable for students, practicing architects, and those who are interested in the detailing of architecture. Note: in my opinion this book is of a reference nature and not recommended for leisure reading.

Brilliant and indispensible

This book is the thinking person's "Graphic Standards" (no slight to that book intended). But in this case, instead of handing you details, it teaches you how to design your own details. It is not only a one-of-a-kind approach but incredibly well-done, well organized, and beautifully illustrated as well. It is a guide to knowing why details should be designed in particular ways. It explains, in depth, what to think about when designing at the level of the detail. And the three case studies in the back of the book are worth their weight in gold. This book truly makes the point that detailing is part of the process of design. Get it, and keep it.

Dark Angel - A pretty Good Read

This is my first book by Lynne Graham and I was pleasantly surprised. This book as already been written out in past reviews is about a really sharp up & coming young executive that got set up and shafted for embezzling funds from this family run wine company. After serving 5 yrs of prison term, he is freed and the course for revenge is set in motion. Part of his revenge is to reclaim the fiance that left him right before his arrest.
A lot of people don't like the hero, but I did. He is an alpha hero through and through, arrogant as heck, but very possessive of his woman. He did act like a jerk initially, but 5 years of prison, it kind of changes a person and he could have turned out a lot worst. In addition, he truly felt that the heroine may have known about his setup many years ago since her breakup with him was timed so perfectly. But after a few days of being together again, the chemistry and the feelings comes flooding back for the both of them. I also admire how the hero has risen up from poverty with a single mom and labeled a bastard child.
There were momemts where I felt the heroine was just too naive and should have "stood by her man". However, she too was searching for love of family and a sense of belonging.
The loves scenes were sensual but not burning hot. If they were kicked up a notch, I would have given the book a full 5 stars.

I actually like this book... ;0)

I actually like this book, i mean yes the heroe was a bit over shadowing, obessive & mentally abusive towards the heroine but i mean there is a good story underneath all of this and if you can bypass all of the qualities of the heroe then you will like this book, meaning most romance novels has a over shadowing, obessive & mentally abusive heroe at times but underneath it all you always have a good story....

intense story, just not my type of book

When I read Dark Angel I was curious because either people thought it was really good or didn't think much of it. I am from the second group.

Luciano de Valenza rescued the Linwood's failing wine business five years ago. In the process he fell in love with Kerry Linwood. Just when everything seemed to be perfect Luciano's life fell apart. Kerry's step-sister Rochelle told her Luciano had slept with her. To make matters worse, money was embezzled from the business and Luciano was convicted and imprisoned. For Luciano, the saddest part was Kerry believed he was guilty of embezzlement and sleeping with her step-sister. So much for true love.

Fast forward to the present time...Luciano is out of prison and seeking revenge at those who didn't believe in him. You'll have to read the story to find out more. For those of you who like alpha males, Luciano is über-alpha.

Now for the down side. For a contemporary romance I had a hard time believing Kerry was so naive about both her family and her sexuality. The constant addition of Italian phrases of endearment that Luciano said to her drove me batty after awhile. I just didn't believe the love was there. The story was not satisfying to me and I kept hoping for more. If you want to read the book save your money and see if the library has Dark Angel.

Even in our internet age, there are some essential hard copy references that have a place on the diminishing bookshelves of most practising engineers and materials scientists. The distinctively yellow-bound Shell Bitumen Handbook, first published in 1949 and now issued in its sixth edition, is certainly one such valued book. It replaces the fifth edition of 2003 and is completely reorganised, thoroughly updated and expanded by around 50%. Three principal authors, led by civil engineer and expert asphalt consultant, Dr Robert Hunter, are supported by a panel of specialist authors, many of whom are with Shell Bitumen. Those familiar with the fifth edition will find the chapters rearranged somewhat, with a net increase in chapters from 20 to 24 and a doubling of appendices from 4 to 8. The new chapter sequence approximately follows the life of bitumen, from its origins and manufacture, through its properties and use in asphalts, then design, installation and performance of asphalt pavements, to durability and other applications for bitumen and asphalt. Two of the new appendices indicate an objective to make the handbook more international: Appendices 5 and 6, respectively, list bitumen and asphalt product standards across the world. In the former, different principles are used in various regions, with performance graded (PG) specification being used in North America and partly in China, whereas empirical testing is used elsewhere, such as penetration/softening in Europe, Africa and much of Asia, and viscosity in Australasia, the Indian subcontinent, Mexico and parts of South America (and for soft grades in Europe); unfortunately, there is some minor inconsistency between the text and the map in Appendix 5. A surprising omission from the previous edition was guidance on the design of asphalt mixtures. This gap is well and thoroughly addressed in the new edition, with a completely new, 50-page Chapter 12. In common with all the chapters in this book, Chapter 12 is clearly written and beautifully presented, being both easy and a pleasure to read, supported by full-colour diagrams of impressive clarity; there are no photographs in this particular chapter, but elsewhere there are plenty of good-quality images, as appropriate. This new chapter provides a grounding in the principles that underpin asphalt mix design, notably mixture volumetrics and aggregate grading , then explains the four most widely implemented design methods, all of which were developed in the USA: Hubbard Field , Hveem (or California ), Marshall (or Corps of Engineers , perhaps the best known) and Superpave (the most recent, resulting from a research programme initiated in response to increasing premature pavement failures). As well as reorganisation and the new chapter on asphalt mix design, existing users will be pleased to know that this new edition sets out to update the whole opus, and two splendid examples are the completely new Chapter 7 on rheology of bitumens and the extended Chapter 8 (formerly Chapter 5) on polymer-modified bitumens and other modified binders. The former is a most valuable 30-page addition on a critical property, especially with the growth in the use of polymer-modified bitumens, authored jointly by specialists from Shell (Dr Richard Taylor) and the University of Nottingham (Professor Gordon Airey). A potentially complex account of the science of rheology is handled with skill and clarity, then the rheological behaviour of bitumen is considered first in terms of a low-temperature linear elastic region , then a high-temperature viscous region and finally an intermediate temperature visco-elastic region . --Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers Construction Materials 169 February 2016 Issue CM1

Best VB book out there!

For the price, this book is incredible! If you are a beginner or an intermediate to VB, this book is it. I bought this book three weeks ago, read up to the 26th chapter out of 34 and I am now already writing complex code for a satellite corporation. I'm using Class Modules, ADO objects, and communicating with MS Access for data storage. Excellent book, as Sheriff goes through the material with short, but concise chapters using good code examples. He lets you know what you should and should not do in current and future code development. Excellent examples in using ADO with SQL or MS Access. Only one thing he could improve upon is using and passing arrays which I had to experiment for myself, but again the best book I've seen in VB to date.

Amongst the best of hand-holding/reference VB books

I am a programmer/consultant in another language and have purchased many programming books over the years. In the VB world (as other languages) I've encountered difficult to understand authorship in many of the books out there.
Paul Sheriff's style is not only easy to understand, but the material gets to the heart of the matter in each topic with excellent examples. This book is for all levels of VB programmers as it can be used as a beginners book, yet as a good reference book for more advanced programmers. You don't need the index cards with this one.
Hat's off to this one! It's about time! (No, I'm not one of Paul's friends :)

Starting VB6 programming? Pick this up !!!

First, the PROs: This is an excellent book for any persong wishing to learn the basics of VB6 programming. It starts up with the basics, such as forms, controls, programming logic, etc. Then as you read on, the complexity of code increases. Each chapter builds on previous one, introducing the reader to new ways of programming. By the time you reach section II, you have a good understanding of basic programming principles (that is if you follow all exercises, and create few additional ones to practice new concepts). This book touches briefly on classes and object development (but this is a beginners book after all). ADO programming includes some very useful information for the new VB6 students. Overall, this is a pretty good tutorial style book.
Now, the CONs: The writer's style seemed to change a couple of times. Most of part I was an excellent guide to VB6 programming. I had a problem with several chapters (expecially in the 2nd section). It looked like the author did not pay as much attention to teaching. Mr. Sheriff talked about a new topic without serious attempts to clarify via example demonstrations. It seemed to me almost as if these chapters were written by another person. Other than that, I was really satisfied with the book, and would recommend it to others. If you want the basics (including good instruction on proper coding standards), this is the book you should invest in.
