Very well written with plenty of examples and R code ...

Very well written with plenty of examples and R code. It contains some theoretical background (providing proofs and derivations) as well as applications. However, since it covers a wide spectrum (it provides both frequentist and Bayesian perspectives) it doesn't duel deeply in some subjects. At the end of each chapter there are bibliographical references for those interested in further reading. Very valuable resource.

In Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, psychology professor John Gottman explores the emotional relationship between parents and children. It's not enough to simply reject an authoritarian model of parenting, Gottman says. A parent needs to be concerned with the quality of emotional interactions. Gottman, author of Why Marriages Succeed or Fail, and coauthor Joan Declaire focus first on the parent (a "know thyself" approach), and provide a series of exercises to assess parenting styles and emotional self-awareness. The authors identify a five-step "emotion coaching" process to help teach children how to recognize and address their feelings, which includes becoming aware of the child's emotions; recognizing that dealing with these emotions is an opportunity for intimacy; listening empathetically; helping the child label emotions; setting limits; and problem-solving. Imagine if your own parents had read this book...

There are many parenting books out there that are as controversial as they are popular. You use what you find helpful and ignore what doesn't fit in with your own personal parenting philosophy. I found most of Goleman's techniques in this book to be insightful and invaluable.

Too often, we may find ourselves giving in to venting our anger or frustration at our children for our own emotional benefit, forgetting that they are not adept at reading their own feelings much less yours. It is too easy to discount our little ones' cries as merely manipulative attempts to get what they want. (The author DOES recognize that children DO try to manipulate adults in this way and recommends not using emotion coaching in those instances.) This is a realistic, practical, and easily read book told from the perspective of a father who also relays helpful instances in his own life where he'd used emotion coaching.

One benchmark that I often use to judge parenting books are their philosophies on punishment, particularly time-outs. Goleman believes in the proper implementation of time-outs. They are to be consistent and respectful, not opportunities to emotionally berate or humiliate children. He believes that it is best used for children aged 3-8 and should last about a minute. You may want use Amazon's search-within-a-book feature and search for "time-out" to get a better idea.

The author sites studies showing that emotional intelligence is linked to higher reading and math IQ's, social competence, and physical health. We all wish the best for our children, and reading this book will help you to be the best parent you can be. More than that, you've probably noticed, that our children have a lot more benefits available to them than we did (baby care gadgets, nutritional food, innovative schooling, etc.) and yet, if I were to choose one benefit of our present to have as a child, I would have wished that my own parents had read this book. How wonderful that would have been!

Grade 7 Up-- A succinct biography of the black novelist whose spirited use of dialect occasioned criticism from other prominent black writers, and who until recently was largely forgotten. Raised in Florida at the turn of the century , Hurston was indefatigable in her pursuit of self-improvement and an outlet for her acknowledged storytelling gift. Although it took many years, she put herself through Howard University, and then went on to Barnard for an advanced degree in anthropology. During these same years, her short stories made her an award-winning contributor to the literature of the Harlem Renaissance, from which she went on to write novels and compile collections of black folklore. Lyons is fond of her subject, and attempts to gild the lily--but Hurston, prickly as a cactus, refuses to gild. Her self-promotion, flamboyance, and inability to maintain stable relationships come through clearly. But so, thanks to the inclusion of generous passages from her various books, does her shining literary gift. While the cover does not grab, a 30-second booktalk using Hurston's traumatic family life or her experience with zombies in Haiti, a telling of one of her folktales, or a quick look at any of the excellent black-and-white photographs that grace the book will catch readers. Even on paper, whether it is in her words or her image, Hurston is a vibrant presence. Young adults who encounter her will come away enriched. An extraordinary opportunity awaits humanity

“Inventing the Future” by Nick Srnicek and Alex Williams offers both a practical strategy and hopeful vision of life beyond neoliberalism. The book is a collaboration between Mr. Srnicek, who is a progressive thinker, educator and author with Mr. Williams, who is a brilliant PhD student. The author’s breakthrough analysis suggests that a post-capitalist future is possible.

Srnicek and Williams critique the “folk politics” of today’s Left for its failure to offer a systemic challenge to capitalism. The authors believe an equivalent to the Right’s Mont Pelerin Society is needed to articulate an expansive Leftist vision for a better future. An astute analysis supports the author’s contention that a Euro-centric capitalism must necessarily yield to a new, more encompassing concept of humanity whose “synthetic freedom” will know no boundaries.

Fortunately, Srnicek and Williams offer a strategy to achieve a “post work consensus”. The key components of the strategy include: full automation (to free labor from routine work); a sharply reduced work week; and a universal basic income (UBI). The authors recognize that consensus-building must focus on persuading the media, academia and business of the necessity for change.

On that point, I found Srnicek and Williams’ discussion of the world’s surplus population to be very informative. Capital has no solution to intractable unemployment in the global south that has been caused by a process of proletarianization in an era of post-industrialism. However, the looming prospect of “full unemployment” spreading to the north should be welcomed: humanity has an extraordinary opportunity to break the work ethic and the suffering religiosity of its primitive past. With the benefits of technology freely shared amongst a humanity that has been freed of brutality, greed and competition, one cannot help but be excited about the new horizons that might finally open up for us.

I highly recommend this excellent book to everyone.

A Source for Hope

When I was reading this, lying in bed my wife asked me what I was reading now – the format of the book is enough that it shook her out of the idea that it was just another book and instead made her ask.

I told her it might be the most important book I ever read. So many books that strike a criticism of the existing world and a future that can come through the mechanisms recommended in the book just have so many holes and they leave me feeling hopeless. But I keep reading them, both in the “Destroy Capitalism” and the “Reform Capitalism” genres. But the authors here have a smart take that make me optimistic view of how we get from here to there. We need a party moving forward the invented future. We need emancipation, a universal income, and we need to watch the rise of the robots. But we need to leverage that rise. The program is incomplete, but it is a foundation. And it is a source for optimism. The kids are all right.

Reclaiming Modernity

In "Inventing The Future" S&W (Srnicek & Williams) show that the transition to a post-capitalist society is less an issue of means than of imagination. S&W help imagine a post-capitalist society, and develop a roadmap towards it. This roadmap is based on a Left-Accelerationist politics and a Laclauian formulation of hegemony. S&W's contribution should be seen as part of a larger debate on 21st Century politics, economics, and society. Proposing the need to break from 20th century versions of Socialism, S&W critique the contemporary Left's emphasis on temporal, spatial, and conceptual immediacy. This means moving beyond what S&W call "Folk Politics": a narrow commitment to horizontalism, localism, consensus, and prefigurative forms of action. S&W's post-capitalist vision is both different from previous experiments, and open-ended as to its establishment. While providing an analysis of the failures of Social Democratic parties, S&W delineate the decades-long work behind the establishment of Neoliberal Hegemony. For William Davies, neoliberalism can be understood as an effort to anchor modernity in the market, or make economics the main measure of progress and reason. S&W propose overcoming Folk Politics by paying close attention to the strategic rise of neoliberal intellectuals - with the 70's Stagflation Crisis as a turning point - like Milton Friedman and Friedrich V. Hayek, organizations like the Mont Pelerin Society, and think tanks like Cato Institute.

For S&W, the Left must "reclaim the future" and build a populist counter-hegemonic force founded on concrete demands. Such demands, which must have a utopian edge and be grounded in real tendencies, can shift the political equilibrium, and build platforms beyond traditional blue-collar unionism and socialist parties. Underpinning these demands is a strategy that envisions change in terms of decades (cultural shifts) rather than years (electoral cycles). S&W, looking at the phenomenon of Premature-Deindustrialization (Contemporary Industrial Societies) and Jobless-Growth (Post-Industrial Societies), show that technological unemployment can create the conditions for increasing "Synthetic Freedom". Achieving Synthetic Freedom, which requires the attainment of Formal Rights & Material Capacities, can be assisted by maximizing automation, reducing the working week (job-sharing), providing a UBI (Universal Basic Income), and adopting a post-work ethic. The outcomes of Premature-Deindustrialization and Jobless-Growth have a direct impact on society, and variations of basic income provision are already being proposed by mainstream policy makers and economists. UBI experiments in Finland, Holland, Uganda, Kenya, and by Y-Combinator, are investigating the effects of a UBI on assistance-efficiency, standards of living, creativity, and leisure time.

With an orientation towards the Future, S&W aim to reclaim the "Empty Signifier of Modernism". Doing so involves reviving Modernist ideals such as freedom, universality, and reason, while decoupling such ideals from their relationship with, for example, colonialism, patriarchy, and imperialism. As expressed by Mark Fisher, much of anti-capitalism has anti-modernist tendencies, and easily slides from anti-statism into anti-politics. For S&W, this requires, as part of a Left modernising project, decoupling desire and technology from Capital, and reclaiming the value of freedom from the Right rather than only focusing on inequality. Synthetic Freedom, already mentioned above, is synthetic in the sense that it is "artificially" produced through the provision of socio-technical infrastructure, rather than through the elimination of social interference. Formal Rights are meaningless without the material capacities needed to exercise them. Following the likes of Paul Mason and Toni Negri, S&W believe that the subject of post-capitalism will emerge in the development of a new "mode of production". This new mode of production is based on a system of technologies such as Allende's bold Cybersin Project, additive manufacturing, automated logistics, social media, alternative currencies, etc. For S&W, such socio-technical infrastructure, which can facilitate "non-market" forms of production, distribution, deliberation, and ownership, can make new ways of seeing ourselves and relating to others possible.

With this book, S&W have influenced important debates we will be having for years to come. S&W's work should be read alongside the work of people like Paul Mason, Mariana Mazzucato, Yochai Benkler, and more. Shorter complementary texts include Bertrand Russell's In Praise of Idleness, David Graeber's "On Bulls*** Jobs", Karl Marx's "Fragment on Machines", John M. Keynes's "Economic Possibilities For Our Grandchildren", Oscar Wilde's The Soul of Man Under Socialism, Yochai Benkler's "Complexity & Humanity", Alex Williams's "Escape Velocities", and Roberto Unger's "Beyond The Small Life: A Letter To Young People".

Unusual but entertaining tale

About the only reason I do not give this a five star review is because a couple of the themes explored are not particularly my "cup of tea", though all the ideas explored in this quick but quite fun little tale are well-written. The author is very skilled at turning out this sorts of short urban-fantasy-with-erotic overtones stories. The events experienced by the main character are describe quite vividly and with flair; an enjoyable read for any fans of the genre(s) explored.

I've taught thermo dozens of times out of four textbooks. Koretsky is the book that the students have appreciated the most and with enthusiasm. I'm very excited about the much clearer grasp of the concepts the students have obtained with this book this semester. The writing is very informative and clear, the choice of topics is perfect and the examples are wonderful. Futhermore, the sophistication of the topics is also at a high level, but is approachable for the students, as the concepts are explained so well. First edition, but oh well

This text is good for exactly what it claims: the undergraduate. If you're looking for a good general text on thermodynamics that you can use throughout your career (even as a graduate student), this is NOT it. But if you're looking for an easy-to-approach and helpful book that spoon-feeds you the (admitedly difficult the first time) concepts of thermodynamics, this is the text for you. Koretsky himself is upfront about this in the preface. There are a lot of funny errors in this printing (look in the front cover to see that the units for gravitational acceleration are m^2/s and that a m^3 is only 10^-3 L. That would be a LOT of Coke). But hey, even BS&L (the hailed transport phenomena text of chemical engineering) is full of them (if you don't believe me, check out the correngia on Bird's website at U of W). The charts in the back are somewhat complicated to use, at least a lot more than my favorite textbook of all time, Felder and Rosseau's Introduction to Chemical Engineering. In conclusion, good for the confused and undergraduate, of little value to the graduate and practicing.

Great Text. A Realistic Read.

I received my B.S. in chemical engineering (2005) at OSU and studied this text, in part, under Dr. Koretsky. The text was split into two undergraduate courses. I recently entered a PhD program at Texas A&M and reviewed almost the entire text in preparation for the qualifier. The text information was more than sufficient to pass the thermodynamics portion of the test at Texas A&M.

In reviewing some of the other comments, I noticed that there is an indication that the primary problem is a lack of detail. I believe this text has more than enough detail for 99.9% of thermodynamics students. If you know the material in this text, you will have the required thermodynamics background for most graduate courses in chemical engineering. Additionally, you will be ahead of most other graduate students.

I believe the text is excellent because it is clear and practical. It covers, what appears to me, to be the important topics in a clear way. It can be realistically reviewed in its entirety in two undergraduate courses, plus maybe a couple of self study weeks afterward. I reviewed nearly the entire book in about 1 month during the summer before starting graduate school.

This is a very nice book for undergraduate thernodynamics. I decided to use it for teaching this class for sophomores. The material es very well presented and developed, with lots of examples. The set of problems at the end of each chapter is also interesting. Definitely a good purchase.

About the Author
Stephen Arterburn is a best-selling and award-winning author with over 8 million books in print. He has authored or coauthored such great books as Every Man s Battle and Healing Is a Choice. He has also been editor of 10 Bible projects including the Life Recovery Bible. Steve founded New Life Treatment Centers in 1988 and is currently host of the radio and television show New Life Live. In 1996 he started the most successful traveling conference, Women of Faith, attended by over 4 million. He and his wife live with their 5 kids in Fishers, Indiana.

Tired of banging my head against the wall

A while back, I received a tweet from PR by the Book looking for folks to read Steve Arterburn's new book, Walking into Walls.

Well, it just so happens, the forehead of my heart is pretty beat up from walking into so many walls over the course of my adult life.

So I replied to the tweet and asked for a review copy of the book.

The book was sent to me with no strings attached. They just asked that I write a review if the book resonated with me in any way.

So, here I am with my copy of Walking into the Walls: 5 Blind Spots that Block God's Work in You sitting beside me, bleeding with pink highlighter. It resonated alright.

Walking into Walls (Worthy Publishing, August 2011), identifies the five "blind spots" that cause us to make poor choices: stubborn resistance, self-centered entitlement, justifiable resentment, blind ignorance, and disconnected isolation.

Steve Arterburn doesn't just inform readers about the walls, he shares practical guidance on how to stop banging our heads against them.

Through his work with New Life Ministries, Arterburn encounters men and women who desperately want to be healed from their hurts and hang-ups but keep repeating the same toxic patterns over and over...walking into walls, if you will.

My initial response to Steve's introductory statement was a mixture of skepticism and hope.

Even if you were living in the worst possible abusive situation or the most neglectful and disconnected relationship, you may have built a wall that keeps you stuck in a dark place where you don't have to stay. Once you take responsibility, you will find new hope and insight as you get your life unstuck and move past your wall.
I've read a boat-load of Christian books, but consistent emotional health seems to continue slipping from my desperate grasp.

Of all the books I've read, Walking into Walls spelled things out the most clearly. Steve Arterburn's matter-of-fact style kept me reading. He didn't waltz around the hard things. He spoke the truth in love.

The walls that hold us back are often constructions built in our own minds from incomplete or misunderstood pieces of reality and combined half-truths woven together in a way that builds a false perception of the truth. In that sense, what often stops us are barriers that aren't really there.
Steve doesn't discount the very real pain many of us have experienced. His compassion and understanding are evident throughout the book. But he understands that we allow our past and present trauma to multiply by the way we think about it.

He provides insight on how to change the way we think about our hurts and the people who perpetrated those hurts.

From romantic relationships and family bonds to job growth and satisfaction to health and recovery, Walking into Walls covers all areas for "getting unstuck" and moving into the future. The book also takes great care to distinguish the differences between walls and personal boundaries and offers a study guide for continued future use. (PR by the Book)
A straight-forward read, I recommend Walking into Walls to any wounded soul who wants to move past the pain and experience a full life without walls.

Taking It to the Next Level

I am a licensed professional counselor and I was listening to the New Life radio show and heard Stephen Arterburn discuss this book. I made a mental note to call to get the book and when I walked to my office my first client gave me a copy of Walking into Walls after having already read it. What a confirmation that I was to read this book!! Within a day I finished it marking several sections that spoke to my life. Especially the wall of justifiable resentment. Oh, do I have justifiable resentment but I began to realize the stumbling block this has become in my life. I saw my life in a new and fresh way through this book. With a built in study guide and an easy to read format this book would be great for a Bible study or for an individual. So if you want to take your walk with God to the next level this book is just the tool needed.

5 Steps to tearing down the walls you have built

How many times have you said to yourself , I am not the one with the problem, my wife is or my husband is, I can handle this on my own, I deserve to be treated better than this. How many walls do you have standing between you and that person you think has the problem or the one that treated you unfair.

These walls stop us from having relationships, happiness and most of all keep us from doing the work that God has planned for us and to live a joyful life. We all need healing and break down the walls and make sure they are not erected again to block our way. We build our own walls even though we do not realize it at the time and we need to learn to deal with our wall and tear it or remain in misery . When one sees reality from a new perspective you are liberated to live with less pain and conflict in your life.

The five walls that the author has the reader dealing with are the Walls of , Stubborn Resistance, Arrogant Entitlement, Justifiable Resentment, Disconnected Isolation and the wall of Blind Ignorance. Can you picture yourself hiding behind one of these walls? I know I have seen myself in some of this book.

With an excellent study guide at the end of this book, I highly recommend this book and if you are like me have a pen, paper and marker handy as you will be using them. If you are familiar with the Women of Faith books Stephen Afterburner was the originator of this successful women's conference started in 1966.
