The Best Gift You Can Give

A few years ago I was introduced to this book as the new owner of a toy store. I can honestly say that this book has changed my life and the world around me. It is simply the best gift that you can give to someone. I have witnessed people pick up this book and shed a tear while reading it. It touches you. People buy it for newborns, children graduating from kindergarten,grandchildren,highschool graduation,college graduation,you name it. The painted rock fish in this book inspire the reader to look at life around them and see the world through new inspired eyes. It encourages you to make this world a better place. The children at one of our local elementary schools have lined the front entry to their school with painted rock fish dedicated to Linda Kranz and her book. The words from this book are etched in metal for everyone to read as they enter the school. How many books inspire this in a community? Only One You is truely the best gift that you can give.

Beautiful book for children with a great message!

I love this book! It has a great message about being an individual while not telling kids how unrealistically special they are. I don't like books that tell kids that they are more special than others, etc. This one talks about how sometimes you need to stand out and sometimes you need to fit in. I think it is the perfect balance of teaching kids that it's okay to be different and it's okay to be the same, so long as you stay true to who you are.

I liked this book so much that I bought Linda Kranz's other book You Be You. I love that one, too!

This is a beautiful book with reminders for your child that there is no one out there like them. That they are unique and amazing. I bought this for my daughter's teachers to sign at the end of the school year. She has just finished 7th grade, so we are getting a late start on this. I plan on giving this to her on the day of her 12th grade graduation.

About the Author
Kevin M. White has been an Apple Certified Trainer since 2000 and is a regular presenter at industry events. Kevin co-authored his first book in 2005 and has subsequently authored or co-authored several books including OS X Support Essentials 10.10 and Managing Apple Devices. Kevin also serves the Apple community through his company, Macjutsu Inc., which is dedicated to sharing knowledge of the “Apple way.”

Gordon Davisson has spent over 20 years working with Apple hardware and software and designing and implementing networking solutions. An Apple Certified System Administrator, Gordon has also been an Apple Certified Trainer since 2002 and is currently a consultant and instructor teaching multiple Mac and OS X courses. A thick book full of fluff.

The writing style is "wordy". The author writes like a high school kid trying to get a paper up to a designated word count. It is almost dizzying and I found my mind wandering trying to get to the meat of each topic. I'm only 1/4 of the way in and I'm wondering if I'll ever be able to separate all of this chaff from the actual information I need to get caught up after being out of this game for a few years.

I was captivated, and dismayed, while reading this story...which is true. My heart goes out to Mr. Kipling, and his family, living through such harrowing times. I cannot imagine the pain but come close by reading the words. It breaks my heart such a brilliant young man was lost so soon.

outstanding scholarship

Anyone who is seriously interested in the history of Zen should add this authoritative book to their own library of Zen books. Compiled,translated and annotated by a Western-trained philosopher, Victor Sogen Hori, it is impressive in itself, but the first one hundred or so pages consisting of the Preface and Introduction alone will take you on an authentic journey into Japanese Zen. I must also mention an added and a nostalgic note is that the book's shared dedication names the late Kobori Nanrei, former Osho of the Ryoko-in at the Daitoku-ji, who gave me my own initial instruction into the challenges of a Zen-life now almost forty years ago.

Something New Every Day

I use this book to find capping phrases for koan study under my Zen teacher. It is almost the only English translation of capping phrase collections. True to its origins, the phrases are arranged by their number of characters; not by topic or subject matter. At first, that seemed pointlessly cumbersome.

However, using this book feels much like thumbing through a dictionary or encyclopedia. Every few pages you find an insight into yourself and your practice, an insight you did not even know you were looking for. Don't try to make a list of your favorite phrases, every time you pick up the book, something new will catch your attention, something that fits just that moment, that awareness.

For a Zen student, this is an exceptionally valuable book.

Victor Sogen Hori knows of what he speaks. A graduate of Stanford, and a Rinzai priest, he has expanded upon his fine article in Stephen Heine's book on Koan. The first hundred pages is Victor Hori writing about the Rinzai koan curriculum, how koans are used, and some very needed clarification on what satori and kensho are all about. He makes it clear that zen is not about "pure consciousness" and that there is cognitive activity in the so called enlightened state, although not what we would think. Victor Hori's narrative is easy to follow, backed by his experience with various teachers, as well as literary citations. The introduction alone is worth the price for serious practitioners of zen

Prior to its first publication in 1990, author and investigative journalist William M Johnson spent five years researching The Rose-Tinted Menagerie. His research took him to big tops, menageries and dolphin pools throughout the length and breadth of Europe, and to circus shows from as far afield as the Soviet Union and the United States. "The Rose-Tinted Menagerie" is a top-notch expose not to be missed. Spending almost five years traveling worldwide from across Europe, into the former Soviet Union and in the United States, William Johnson interviewed circus owners, dolphin dealers, law makers, councilmen, former trainers and workers, to get answers behind the curtain of the circus industry, the traveling sideshows, and ever-popular marine parks and dolphinariums. Nor does he cut any slack for the exploiters and the lawmakers, unable to live up to their duties to prevent such abuse from happening.

While the original printed copy was published in 1990, and several facilities followed in the novel have closed since, it still remains as a damning - if not haunting - testament to humanity's inclination to exploit any living creature for the sake of the almighty dollar. Additionally, the investigative piece remains relevant due to the parallels mentioned in the pages continue to run rampant in the circuses and marine parks of today.

While most animal rights-themed investigations would try to sucker punch the reader with an overflow of emotions and exploitative drama, Rose-Tinted Menagerie does not. Johnson proves his point through available reports, documentation, interviews of the proponents and opponents of the circus and dolphinarium industry, as well as logical questioning of how and why these `freak shows' are considered acceptable in society. From the account of the Swiss entrepreneurial dolphin dealer that abandoned his own dolphins at an Egyptian hotel pool, to the reports of CITES and other fauna management organizations standing idly by as the animals plucked from the wild and into the confines of captivity, Johnson leaves no stone unturned as he untangles this web of questionable morals and ethics, animal abuse, "edutainment" and corruption.

For those who seek for the bitter truth on the other side of the performing stage curtain, look no further: this book is just for you. While occasionally overwhelming with information in some pages, it is worth your time. Hasta no Verte Jesus Mio, es la historia contada por una mujer comun y corriente. Elena Ponietowski hace un trabajo excelente con la literatura testimonial dando a conocer la historia de Mexico. Jesusa Palancares ,la protagonista, es una mujer tipica mexicana en en un mundo donde el machismo sobresale y en otros aspectos, ella es feminista, con gracia y mucho humor. This novel is a most. It is not an easy novel to read because uses typical mexican words, and slang but you will enter to a world most of us are not too aware of it.

Esta novela me parece que está bien organizada. Tiene una secuencia cronológica y es fácil de entender.
Narra la vida de Jesusa Palancares y su participación en la revolución mexicana.
Es la historia de una mujer pobre sin amor a los bienes materiales, que a pesar que tiene la oportunidad de poseerlos, siempre elige vivir el día a día; donde nunca sabe si tendrá para comer al día siguiente.
Su narración transporta al lector a la vida en México durante los años revolucionarios, narrando las injusticias sociales desde el punto de vista de una campesina analfabeta. Pero trabajadora y decidida a salir adelante a pesar de las circunstancias.
Jesusa representa el estereotipo de la mujer mexicana de principios de siglo.Una mujer muy orgullosa, trabajadora, leal y sencilla.
La novela también muestra la realidad social vivida, debido a los conflictos armados y la inestabilidad de una nación en crisis.
Esta novela maneja un lenguaje típico de las áreas rurales mexicanas que prevalece hasta hoy día, y que no aparece en el diccionario. Un aporte significativo a esta pubicación definitivamente sería, incluir un glosario de estas palabras, como parte de la publicación. Ya que es necesario leer esta novela tal cual para captar el mensaje que Elena Poniatowska su autora, quiere transmitir.
