`A brief history of the universe' by J. P. McEvoy - excellent
By William P. Palmer
Review of `A brief history of the universe' by J. P. McEvoy published by Robinson of London in 2010.

CITATION: McEvoy, J. P. (2010). A brief history of the universe. London: Robinson.

Reviewer: Dr W. P. Palmer

This book is another in the Brief History series. I found it very well written with well developed connections between the events covered. The book is 300 pages long with suggestions for further reading and an index. The copy reviewed was a paperback at a reduced price so the comparative lack of illustration was to be expected. J. P. McEvoy is an established researcher and writer in this area having previously written about Stephen Hawking and also on quantum theory.

McEvoy starts his history of astronomy with the old Babylonian period from about 2000 BC, moving on to Greek astronomy and Ptolemy's important role in astronomical theory. Part 2 is entitled `Newton's Universe' and starts with Nicholaus Coppernicus. I have always been very fond of Koestler's `The Sleepwalkers: A History of Man's Changing Vision of the Universe (Compass), but McEvoy points out one of Koestler's errors where Koestler claimed that De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestiumwas not widely read in its first edition. McEvoy dedicated his book to Kepler and Einstein, so it is not surprising that he gives a very full and positive account of Kepler's life and discoveries. Galileo and Newton get high praise for their contributions to astronomy, but the author details the flaws in their characters. He is particularly interesting on the terrible way in which Galileo ignored Kepler's letters.

Part 3 is entitled `Einstein's universe' and this brings the reader up to date with 20th and 21st century astronomy. In some ways, this is the least well-known story in astronomy, perhaps because the story-line diversifies so much and there is so much information to record. McEvoy gives one set of connected events well, but omits others. For example I would have expected Subrahmanyam Chandrasekhar, Stephen Hawking and black holes to receive more attention, but the author is only writing a `Brief History'. I did feel the last section may have less well edited as `Sir Hermann Bondi' was referred to as `Sir Hermann Biondi' on several occasions and even in the index. A few small typos also crept in and the author has a great fondness for using the dash as a substitute for the correct punctuation mark.

Overall it is an interesting and worthwhile book providing the ordinary reader with `A brief history of the universe'

Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books (The IVP Bible Dictionary Series)From IVP Academic

Edited by Bill T. Arnold and Hugh G. M. Williamson, the Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books is the second volume in IVP's Old Testament dictionary series. This volume picks up where the Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentateuch left off--with Joshua and Israel poised to enter the land--and carries us through the postexilic period. Following in the tradition of the four award-winning IVP dictionaries focused on the New Testament, this encyclopedic work is characterized by in-depth articles focused on key topics, many of them written by noted experts. The history of Israel forms the skeletal structure of the Old Testament. Understanding this history and the biblical books that trace it is essential to comprehending the Bible. The Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books is the only reference book focused exclusively on these biblical books and the history of Israel. The dictionary presents articles on numerous historical topics as well as major articles focused on the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, Ezra and Nehemiah. Other articles focus on the Deuteronomistic History as well as the Chronicler's History, the narrative art of Israel's historians, innerbiblical exegesis, text and textual criticism, and the emergence of these books as canonical. One feature is a series of eight consecutive articles on the periods of Israel's history from the settlement to postexilic period, which form a condensed history of Israel within the DOTHB. Syro-Palestinian archaeology is surveyed in one article, while significant archaeological sites receive focused treatment, usually under the names of biblical cities and towns such as Jerusalem and Samaria, Shiloh and Shechem, Dan and Beersheba. Other articles delve into the histories and cultures of the great neighboring empires--Egypt, Assyria, Babylonia and Persia--as well as lesser peoples, such as the Ammonites, Edomites, Moabites, Philistines and Phoenicians. In addition there are articles on architecture, Solomon's temple, agriculture and animal husbandry, roads and highways, trade and travel, and water and water systems. The languages of Hebrew and Aramaic, as well as linguistics, each receive careful treatment, as well as the role of scribes and their schools, and writing and literacy in ancient Israel and its environs. The DOTHB also canvases the full range of relevant extrabiblical written evidence, with five articles focused on the various non-Israelite written sources as well as articles on Hebrew inscriptions and ancient Near Eastern iconography. Articles on interpretive methods, on hermeneutics and on preaching the Historical Books will assist students and communicators in understanding how this biblical literature has been studied and interpreted, and its proper use in preaching. In the same vein, theological topics such as God, prayer, faith, forgiveness and righteousness receive separate treatment. The history of Israel has long been contested territory, but never more so than today. Much like the quest of the historical Jesus, a quest of the historical Israel is underway. At the heart of the quest to understand the history of Israel and the Old Testament's Historical Books is the struggle to come to terms with the conventions of ancient historiography. How did these writers conceive of their task and to whom were they writing? Clearly the Old Testament historians did not go about their task as we would today. The divine word was incarnated in ancient culture. Rather than being a dictionary of quick answers and easy resolutions readily provided, the DOTHB seeks to set out the evidence and arguments, allowing a range of informed opinion to enrich the conversation. In this way it is hoped that the DOTHB will not only inform its readers, but draw them into the debate and equip them to examine the evidence for themselves.

Review
"DOTHB should be in the library of every Bible student and teacher, as well as every institution engaged in biblical education. IVP's series of dictionaries stands as a landmark accomplishment for biblical scholarship." (William D. Barrick, The Master's Seminary Journal, Spring 2008)

"A complement to the Dictionary on the Pentateuch and an essential resource for all serious students of the OT. This Dictionary along with its companion volume will reward all who want to explore the world of the OT in greater depth and be better informed for teaching others." (Ian Birch, Connect (Baptist Union of Scotland), December 2008/January 2009)

"This volume provides up-to-date scholarship not only on all the historical books but also world studies relevant to the material covered. An excellent companion for study of a section of the Old Testament canon often neglected." (Arie C. Leder for Calvin Theological Journal, November 2007)

"The quality of the articles is excellent. The articles were accessible, succinct and fair. This is a very helpful resource for students of the Bible at all levels, especially to those who are interested in historical books of the Old Testament, history and culture of ancient Israel and ancient Near East, and issues involved in reconstructing what happened in the past. I highly recommend it." (Uriah Y. Kim, Reviews in Religion and Theology 14, no. 2, 2007)

"Contains fairly even and well-balanced entries that provide a panoramic view of the present landscape in this segment of scholarly research on the historical books, the history of Israel, and relevant archaeological evidence. The contributors to the dictionary, however, do not merely present but also evaluate data. . . . This affordable reference work can benefit all who desire to gain something from its clear presentation of the material, whether undergraduates, graduate students, or scholars." (Steven J. Schweitzer, The Catholic Biblical Quarterly 69, 2007)

"This reference work is intended for an audience spanning the gamut from students and pastors to professors and researchers. . . . This volume is highly recommended." (Beth M. Sheppard, American Reference Books Annual (2006 Edition), volume 37)

"Quite simply, this is an excellent work of reference. Its list of articles has been carefully chosen, and includes all the important ones for understanding the Historical Books of the Old Testament in a wide range of perspectives: methodological, literary, geographical, archaeological, historical, religious, major personalities. Equally well chosen are the authors of the articles, who represent among the best in contemporary biblical scholarship internationally, many of them already well known for their work on the topics they here write about. The articles themselves are concise and yet comprehensive, presenting in lucid fashion the information about their topics, with very helpful bibliographies of relevant scholarship. But more than the presentation of information, the articles dig seriously into the problems of how that information has been and can be interpreted. They offer, thus, a real exposure to the challenges and debates that have made up the study of the Bible in the past and the present." (Peter Machinist, Harvard University, Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations)

"The publisher of DOTHB, the latest volume in the comprehensive series on the Old and New Testaments and their backgrounds, is to be commended on this magnificent achievement. The editors have distinguished and well-deserved reputations in biblical studies, while the authors, some better known than others, are uniformly well-qualified and in the forefront of our field. The list of contributors and articles is comprehensive, if not exhaustive, and those read by the present writer, across the spectrum of history, archaeology and theology, are first-rate both in terms of fair-minded scholarship and reader-friendly literary quality. Authors and editors alike are to be congratulated for a stellar accomplishment. As a person with some experience in the reference work business, I can recommend the new arrival with utmost enthusiasm." (David Noel Freedman, Editor-in-Chief, The Anchor Bible Project)

"One of the best dictionaries I have encountered, this volume on the Historical Books of the Old Testament is a veritable gold mine of information, clearly and competently presented. The treatments are rich and complete, accessible to any reader. Some of them provide as fine a concise guide to the topic under consideration as can be found. Not only does the volume take up obvious and important topics, such as the main historical figures, historical issues and biblical books; it also engages hermeneutical, theological and linguistic matters. In some cases, while the essay is focused on the Historical Books, it will serve as a way into the topic within the whole of Scripture. The authors come from a wide spectrum of points of view, but they all work to present a broad and full picture of the issues under discussion. A valuable reference tool for anyone working in the Scriptures." (Patrick D. Miller, Princeton Theological Seminary)

"It is quite a testimony to a dictionary to say I could hardly resist the temptation to read it through from "Aaron" to "Zerubbabel." History, archaeology, everyday life, theology, religion, geography, critical theories, hermeneutics--it's all there, in articles written by a very wide range of top scholars and younger experts. It is a marvelous volume." (John Goldingay, David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament, Fuller Theological Seminary)

"With entries ranging from 'agriculture' to 'Zion traditions,' DOTHB attempts a 'total context' treatment of the Historical Books of the Old Testament. Since these books are concerned with much more than 'history,' this approach is absolutely right, and is admirably carried through. I am particularly pleased to see the level of awareness of recent developments in biblical and archaeological study in many of the articles. This is a very valuable addition to the IVP dictionary series." (Robert P. Gordon, Regius Professor of Hebrew, University of Cambridge)

"An invaluable guide to the Historical Books which sums up current thinking on all the major issues. Readers can rely on this work for the best in today's scholarship." (John Barton, Oriel and Laing Professor of the Interpretation of Holy Scripture, University of Oxford)

"Given the dramatic developments in the study of ancient Israelite history and historical writing over the past two decades, the publication of an up-to-date dictionary is a most welcome development. Arnold and Williamson have assembled a well-respected international team of scholars to provide readers with clear, concise and helpful overviews of a variety of relevant topics." (Gary N. Knoppers, Head, Classics and Ancient Mediterranean Studies, The Pennsylvania State University)

"This dictionary clearly recognizes the distinction between history as what happened in the past and history as a written record of the past, and gives sustained attention to each. Students will profit immensely from concise statements of the historical issues and from the fair presentation of all major points of view. The bibliographical references should stimulate those who want to dig deeper, and the dictionary format will surely please those who want to and/or need to focus their reading. At a time when so many issues in Israel's history are contested, this dictionary provides a reliable and competent guide." (Ralph W. Klein, Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago)

Great source to begin research!
By LOTR Librarian
Over 150 articles comprise the Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books, which covers the books of Joshua, Judges, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, and Nehemiah.

Each entry is concluded by an extensive bibliography and useful cross-references to other articles in the Dictionary Of The Historical Books.

A unique feature that enhances the readability and usefulness of this dictionary is that the entries are in reality "macro-essays" on larger categories or topics instead of separate smaller essays on the component parts. For example, "Absalom" will be found in the discussion
of "David's Family," and "Anat" under "Canaanite Gods and Religion."

The entries discuss and evaluate many of the key interpretative problems and the relevance of comparative data from literary, cultural, and archaeological sources that pertain to these biblical texts. Archaeological studies are used extensively throughout the entries, with numerous sites being treated separately in addition to their citation within other contexts.

With a wide range of backgrounds and points of view among the 120 contributors, this dictionary contains fairly even and well-balanced entries that provide a panoramic view of the present landscape in this segment of scholarly research on the historical books. It must be noted, however, that the contributors to the dictionary do not merely present but also evaluate data. While some readers no doubt will take issue with some of the interpretations of the various contributors, the entries articulate the state of the question for these issues and topics and offer new directions and interpretative possibilities for the future.

The volume concludes with three indexes: Scripture, subjects,
and articles. Whether you are a scholar, a graduate student, or a layman looking for a summation of scholarly opinion, this volume is for you!

A magnificent achievement
By Commentary Surveyor
Editors Bill Arnold and Paul Williamson have enlisted an international cast of scholars; each addressing topics within their specialties. In the past twenty years a burgeoning list of titles addressing the historicity of the OT has appeared, thus making it necessary for a dictionary that addresses these particular concerns. With entries ranging from "agriculture" to "Zion traditions," DOTHB packs competently presented information cover-to-cover. One of the best dictionaries I have encountered.

Quality Scholarship
By William White
IVP (InterVarsity Press) has a reputation for publishing quality scholarship in the fields of Theology and Biblical Studies. The IVP Bible Dictionary Series is no exception. Dictionary of the Old Testament: Historical Books is the second of IVP's series on the Hebrew Bible (the first: Dictionary of the Old Testament: Pentatuch). IVP mostly utilizes conservative Christian scholars for the articles that comprise their dictionaries. However, often material is gathered for those articles from sources throughout Christian and Judaic scholarship. Also, each entry provides a bibliography referencing a wide range of sources for further study. Those who are interested in New Testament studies should also check out IVP's New Testament volumes in this same series, The IVP Dictionary of Theology, and Dictionary of Biblical Imagery. I personally own all of these and am awaiting the remaining, yet to be published, volumes in the Hebrew Bible series.

“The TED Talk has reinvented the art of rhetoric for the 21st century. Goodbye to windy academese, scientific gobbledygook, pompous moralizing, powerpoint chloroform – we now know that “ideas worth spreading” can indeed be spread far and wide, and with clarity and panache. Behind this revolution lies Chris Anderson, who had a vision that powerful ideas can improve the world and has developed a coherent philosophy and a set of guidelines for compelling communication. This book may restore rhetoric to its time-honored place as one of the essential skills of an educated citizen.” —Steven Pinker, Johnstone Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of HOW THE MIND WORKS and THE SENSE OF STYLE

“Nobody in the world better understands the art and science of public speaking than Chris Anderson. He has nurtured, coaxed, and encouraged so many speakers over the years (myself included) — helping us to bring forth our very best performances onstage, even when we were at our most nervous and overwhelmed. He is the absolutely perfect person to have written this book, and it will be a gift to many.” —Elizabeth Gilbert, bestselling author of BIG MAGIC and THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS

“This is not just the most insightful book ever written on public speaking—it’s also a brilliant, profound look at how to communicate. If you ever plan to utter a sound, this is a must-read. It gives me hope that words can actually change the world.” —Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of GIVE AND TAKE and ORIGINALS

“Over the past 25 years, TED has revitalized the whole world of conferences and speaking events. Here for the first time, Chris Anderson and the TED leadership team set out all they've learnt about the dos and don'ts of public speaking. An essential read for all event organizers and speakers. Is there a single recipe for a great speech? Of course not. But there are some essential ingredients, which the TED team sets out here with concision, verve and wit (which are also some of the ingredients). An inspiring, contemporary guide to the venerable arts of oratory.”  —Sir Ken Robinson, best-selling author of THE ELEMENT, OUT OF OUR MINDS, and CREATIVE SCHOOLS.

“The TED Talk may well be the defining essay genre of our time: what the pamphlet was to the 18th-century, and the newspaper Op-Ed was to the twentieth. TED Talks is the guidebook to this new language, written by the man who made into it a global force.” —Steven Johnson, bestselling author of HOW WE GOT TO NOW

“Anderson shares the secrets behind the best TED presentations, believing that anyone can be taught the skills to deliver a compelling speech—TED-style or otherwise. It’s all presented very naturally and with an upbeat, positive tone …. readers will be able to use the techniques for any manner of public speaking.” —Booklist

“[Anderson] covers important topics such as making a personal connection with audiences, explaining complicated subjects to laypeople, priming people to accept counterintuitive ideas, and cultivating a sense of showmanship. He also addresses aspects of preparation, such as knowing what vocal styles to avoid, planning attire, and managing nervousness. This is an invaluable guide to effective presentations, and catnip for all the TED fans out there.” —Publishers Weekly

From the Inside Flap
For anyone who has ever been inspired by a TED Talk ...

This is an insider s guide to creating talks that are unforgettable.

Since taking over TED in the early 2000s, Chris Anderson has shown how carefully crafted short talks can be the key to unlocking empathy, stirring excitement, sharing knowledge, and promoting a shared dream. Done right, a talk can electrify a room and transform an audience s worldview; it can be more powerful than anything in written form.

This book explains how the miracle of powerful public speaking is achieved, and equips you to give it your best shot. There is no set formula; no two talks should be the same. But there are tools that can empower any speaker.

Chris Anderson has worked behind the scenes with all the TED speakers who have inspired us the most, and here he shares insights from such favorites as Sir Ken Robinson, Amy Cuddy, Elizabeth Gilbert, Salman Khan, Dan Gilbert, Monica Lewinsky, and dozens more everything from how to craft your talk s content to how you can be most effective on stage. This is the 21st century s new manual for truly effective communication, and it is a must-read for anyone who is ready to create impact with their ideas.

Painless Learning for Great Public Speaking
By JamesMcRitchie
TED Talks reminds me a little of a book I read decades ago… Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess. As I read that book I kept thinking, yes, interesting idea – and another. When I finished, I thought ok good pointers but will it make any difference? Then I played someone who I had never won against in dozens of opportunities and I beat them.

Bobby Fischer’s book was one of the first popular books I read that used programmed learning… stepping the reader through a series of painless exercises. I’ve also seen that technique also used in a book that teaches math by setting up the problems faced by Euclid, etc. and giving readers enough clues so they too can reach their own aha moments.

While TED Talks doesn’t use programmed learning, it is very painless reading, packed with lots of good ideas. You may not come away and be able to deliver a TED Talk right away but you will come away with at least several new ideas on how to improve your ability to get your message across in group settings.

Anyone who has seen several TED Talks knows there is no one way to deliver the talks but the book has plenty to say about what generally doesn’t work and what does. I’ll just hit on a few that struck me as helpful:

• Don’t give a sales pitch. The speaker’s job is to give to the audience, not to take.
• Sometimes it takes a little demolition before changing minds. Example: In ancient societies, a third of men died violent deaths. Modern media plays up violence because that’s what sells. We've changed. After crushing their stereotypes, now you can go onto your points.
• Take your audience down your own path of discovery. By asking them to join the process, they get more involved.
• Make sure your words and images work together.
• Don’t leave a slide up once you are finished with it. Better to put up a blank screen to avoid distraction.
• Transitions in Keynote should be kept simple. Cut when shifting to a new idea. Dissolve when slides are related. Dazzle distracts.
• Most TED speakers memorize and then practice so much it sounds spontaneous.
• Wrinkled clothes telegraph you don’t try. If you don't care, why should they?
• Breathe deeply, take your power pose. Be sure to hydrate.
• Keep your notes by your water. When you grab a drink, you can quickly glance at where you are. Notes can be there if you need them. Hopefully, you won't.

I’m sure you’ll come up with your own list of tips from this very helpful book.

TED Talks
By Michael Taylor
"TED Talks" by Chris Anderson is a helpful title for anyone wanting to become a more effective public speaker. The book is around 250 pages and covers such topics as:

1. Getting appropriately personal in your talk.
2. Simplifying difficult to explain concepts.
3. Suggestions for using slides.
4. Pointers on preparing for the presentation.
5. Making an impression.
6. What to wear during your presentation.
7. Using/not using notes while presenting.
8. Suggestions for calming your nerves during the presentation.

Throughout the book Anderson effectively uses the experiences of several people to make his point. The narrative is very readable and smoothly transitions from chapter to chapter. Will be an often used future reference.

Ted Talks
By Alla S.
I’m always interested in improving my public speaking skills and I’ve heard a lot about TED, so I was curious about this book. The book is split up into the following sections: “Foundation,” “Talk tools,” “Preparation process,” “On stage,” and “Reflection.” Some of the advice discussed included reducing the range of topics to a single connected thread that can be properly developed, using metaphors, the different talk tools (connection, narration, explanation, persuasion, revelation), ways to start strong (delivering a dose of drama, igniting curiosity, showing a compelling slide, video, or object, teasing without giving it away), ways to end with power (call to action, personal commitment, linking back to the opening, etc.) and much more. Also discussed was the physical set up of the talk (memorization versus notecards versus slides versus teleprompter, etc.), wardrobe, props, the different formats of presenting a speech, etc. My only suggestion is not a content-related issue, but a format-related issue: some of the chapters were made up of big chunks of text which could have been broken down some more to avoid losing the main ideas. However, the occasional appearance of bullet points and separate headings within the chapters help resolve this issue. Overall, a helpful and informative resource for public speaking.

Brain Rules (Updated and Expanded): 12 Principles for Surviving and Thriving at Work, Home, and School, by John Medina

Most of us have no idea what’s really going on inside our heads. Yet brain scientists have uncovered details every business leader, parent, and teacher should know—like the need for physical activity to get your brain working its best.

How do we learn? What exactly do sleep and stress do to our brains? Why is multi-tasking a myth? Why is it so easy to forget—and so important to repeat new knowledge? Is it true that men and women have different brains?

In Brain Rules, Dr. John Medina, a molecular biologist, shares his lifelong interest in how the brain sciences might influence the way we teach our children and the way we work. In each chapter, he describes a brain rule—what scientists know for sure about how our brains work—and then offers transformative ideas for our daily lives.

Medina’s fascinating stories and infectious sense of humor breathe life into brain science. You’ll learn why Michael Jordan was no good at baseball. You’ll peer over a surgeon’s shoulder as he proves that most of us have a Jennifer Aniston neuron. You’ll meet a boy who has an amazing memory for music but can’t tie his own shoes.

You will discover how:

Every brain is wired differently
Exercise improves cognition
We are designed to never stop learning and exploring
Memories are volatile
Sleep is powerfully linked with the ability to learn
Vision trumps all of the other senses
Stress changes the way we learn

In the end, you’ll understand how your brain really works—and how to get the most out of it.

Introduction

Go ahead and multiply the number 8,388,628 x 2 in your head. Can you do it in a few seconds? There is a young man who can double that number 24 times in the space of a few seconds. He gets it right every time. There is a boy who can tell you the precise time of day at any moment, even in his sleep. There is a girl who can correctly determine the exact dimensions of an object 20 feet away. There is a child who at age 6 drew such vivid and complex pictures, some people ranked her version of a galloping horse over one drawn by da Vinci. Yet none of these children have an IQ greater than 70.
The brain is an amazing thing.

Your brain may not be nearly so odd, but it is no less extraordinary. Easily the most sophisticated information-transfer system on Earth, your brain is fully capable of taking the little black squiggles in this book and deriving meaning from them. To accomplish this miracle, your brain sends jolts of electricity crackling through hundreds of miles of wires composed of brain cells so small that thousands of them could fit into the period at the end of this sentence. You accomplish all of this in less time than it takes you to blink. Indeed, you have just done it. What’s equally incredible, given our intimate association with it, is this: Most of us have no idea how our brain works.

12 Brain Rules
My goal is to introduce you to 12 things we know about how the brain works. I call these Brain Rules. For each rule, I present the science, introduce you to the researchers behind it, and then offer ideas for how the rule might apply to our daily lives, especially at work and school. The brain is complex, and I am taking only slivers of information from each subject—not comprehensive but, I hope, accessible.

Here is a sampling of the ideas you’ll encounter:

• We are not used to sitting at a desk for eight hours a day. From an evolutionary perspective, our brains developed while we walked or ran as many as 12 miles a day. The brain still craves this experience. That’s why exercise boosts brain power (Brain Rule #2) in sedentary populations like our own. Exercisers outperform couch potatoes in long-term memory, reasoning, attention, and problem solving tasks.

• As you no doubt have noticed if you’ve ever sat through a typical PowerPoint presentation, people don’t pay attention to boring things (Brain Rule #6). You’ve got seconds to grab someone’s attention and only 10 minutes to keep it. At 9 minutes and 59 seconds, you must do something to regain attention and restart the clock—something emotional and relevant. Also, the brain needs a break. That’s why I use stories in this book to make many of my points.

Ever feel tired about three o’clock in the afternoon? That’s because your brain really wants to take a nap. You might be more productive if you did. In one study, a 26-minute nap improved NASA pilots’ performance by 34 percent. And whether you get enough rest at night affects your mental agility the next day. Sleep well, think well (Brain Rule #3).

• We’ll meet a man who can remember everything he reads after seeing the words just once. Most of us do more forgetting than remembering, of course, and that’s why we must repeat to remember (Brain Rule #7). When you understand the brain’s rules for memory, you’ll see why I want to destroy the notion of homework.

• We’ll find out why the terrible twos only look like active rebellion but actually are a child’s powerful urge to explore. Babies may not have a lot of knowledge about the world, but they know a whole lot about how to get it. We are powerful and natural explorers (Brain Rule #12). This never leaves us, despite the artificial environments we’ve built for ourselves.

What we know about the brain comes from biologists who study brain tissues, experimental psychologists who study behavior, cognitive neuroscientists who study how the first relates to the second, and evolutionary biologists. Though we know precious little about how the brain works, our evolutionary history tells us this: The brain appears to be designed to (1) solve problems (2) related to surviving (3) in an unstable outdoor environment, and (4) to do so in nearly constant motion. I call this the brain’s performance envelope. Each subject in this book—exercise, sleep, stress, wiring, attention, memory, sensory integration, vision, music, gender, and exploration—relates to this performance envelope. We were in motion, getting lots of exercise. Environmental instability led to the extremely flexible way our brains are wired, allowing us to solve problems through exploration. To survive in the great outdoors, we
needed to learn from our mistakes. That meant paying attention to certain things at the expense of others, and it meant creating memories in a particular way. Though we have been stuffing them into classrooms and cubicles for decades, our brains actually were built to survive in jungles and grasslands. We have not outgrown this.

Because we don’t fully understand how our brains work, we do dumb things. We try to talk on our cell phones and drive at the same time, even though it is literally impossible for our brains to multitask when it comes to paying attention. We have created high-stress office environments, even though a stressed brain is significantly less productive than a non-stressed brain. Our schools are designed so that most real learning has to occur at home. Taken together, what do the studies in this book show? Mostly this: If you wanted to create an education environment that was directly opposed to what the brain was good at doing, you probably would design something like a classroom. If you wanted to create a business environment that was directly opposed to what the brain was good at doing, you probably would design something like a cubicle. And if you wanted to change things, you might have to tear down both and start over.

Blame it on the fact that brain scientists rarely have a conversation with teachers and business professionals, education majors and accountants, superintendents and CEOs. Unless you have the Journal of Neuroscience sitting on your coffee table, you’re out of the loop.

This book is meant to get you into the loop.

A great overview of both findings in neuroscience as well as practical ways to apply them in everyday life
By Michael Schmatz
John splits the book up into twelve different sections, each with findings in neuroscience, as well as how to apply those findings practically. These sections are

Survival: How our brain is a product of our evolution, and some traits it has adopted as a result
Exercise: How exercise improves our cognitive abilities and staves off dementia
Sleep: What the brain does during sleep, how people are biologically predisposed to various sleep patterns, and how to use naps to improve performance
Stress: The various biochemicals involved with stress and how to have less stressful relationships and life
Wiring: How neurons interact, develop, and function
Attention: How multitasking works (or doesn't work), the relationship between emotion and attention, and the need for relaxation to enhance focus
Memory: How memory formation works and the optimal way to remember things
Sensory Integration: How all of the senses work together to provide a cohesive experience, and how multiple senses can be utilized to improve learning
Vision: How vision trumps all of the other senses and can be used to create more effective presentations
Music: How music can cause improvements in cognition, be therapeutic, and how music training can improve cognition
Gender: Differences between the genders in physiology, socialization, emotional reactions, and memory.
Exploration: How the brain is constantly exploring and looking for novel things

A lot of reviewers have pointed out that many of the tips that John gives are common sense - that may be true. However, I found that knowing the neuroscience behind many of the things which John advocates ensures their adoption into day-to-day life.

Overall, a great read that has caused me to change the way I give presentations, how much I exercise and sleep, as well as how I interact with people.

Great read!
By Carlos
Great book! I had to read this for a class that I was taking at my university and it changed the way that I approach my own learning. I have read this book twice now because of how much it interests me. It was a very easy ready read with a lot of stories and wasn't over complicated by big scientific words yet was able to get the big concepts across effectively. I would highly recommend this book to everyone because learning a few things about how we think can help in educational, professional and even personal life.

Good read and up-to-date on neuroscience
By Leadership Ed
I enjoyed the book and found especially valuable information on the newer discoveries about memory, I.e., each time we have a memory we infuse new data into it, so the only stable memory is one not remembered. I encourage the author and other readers to look into the science of Epigenetics as this would enhance some of the information.

Championing "the plain style" with a keen appreciation for the uses to which language can be put—including abuses to which it is prone—The Nuts and Bolts of College Writing is a guide that never fails to remind readers why good writing matters so much in the first place, in college and beyond.

The Cure for Mediocre Writing
By SCOTT A. MACPHEE
I use this book in my AP Language and Composition class. My Seniors suffer all the typical problems . . . wordiness, imprecise use of language, poor introductions and conclusions, and weak transitions. Nuts and Bolts addresses all of these, and does so in a clear, convincing manner.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to tighten his writing.

Haven't read it but if it's anything like the website...
By C. Sahu
...it'll be good. The Nuts and Bolts Website helped me turn a C minus literary criticism paper (I was devastated - I couldn't figure out what I had done wrong) into an A. My particular problem is structuring my ideas logically and building a solid argument. This site, along with an hour with a good tutor ("No, what you have here is NOT a thesis statement!"), and another hour with my eminently logical husband (he's an engineer who works a lot with lawyers) helped me finally understand that I had to, in effect, build a path with brick walls on either side of it, leading my reader along by the hand, rather than wandering all over the countryside to every distraction, expecting my reader to keep up with my desultory ramblings and then find his own way back to the road. And how to do it.

The site is, unlike me, clear, methodical, and understandable, which is very important when you just can't grasp something because it's in your Writer's Blindspot.

I'm buying the book in case the Website ever goes down.

"""If engineering were a religion, it would be the 5th most populous religion in India.""
In India, you become an engineer first and then figure out what you want to do with your life. On 4 October 2014, more than 300 individuals across the globe contributed close to 14,000 AUD and created crowdfunding history. This book became the highest crowdfunded book in India and the 6th highest in Asia. In a nation that is exasperatingly diverse, engineering seems to be one of the biggest obsessions. India produces more engineers annually than twice the population of Iceland.
I set on a backpacking trip across the country to unravel this massive phenomenon at the end of which I lost a camera full of images, but I found a story to tell the world. It is through this journey that I present to you the world's most interesting educational story.

The Saga of Engineering!
By Sneha
The author is on point when he mentions being surprised that nobody has ever tried to write a book on this subject before. I would've never thought that the saga of "Engineering" could be so entertaining. The credit goes to the author who put in a great amount of research to collect facts, figures and interesting stories from all around the country. This book made me understand the real reason of why me and millions of others like me are engineers today. If you are an engineer, from India, this book is a MUST READ. It will leave a mark in your heart!
