About the Author

Bernard J. Mullin, PhD, is chairman and CEO of the Aspire Group, a leading global management and marketing consulting business focusing on the sport and entertainment industry. He previously served as president and chief executive officer of Atlanta Spirit, LLC, where he was responsible for overseeing all team and business operations for the NBA's Hawks and NHL's Thrashers and management of the world-class Philips Arena.

Mullin has more than 30 years of experience in the sport management industry involving executive positions with professional teams and leagues, where he specializes in start-ups and turnarounds, breaking numerous all-time league ticket sales and attendance records. In addition to his position in Atlanta, Mullin served as the NBA’s senior vice president of marketing and team business operations, president and general manager of the IHL’s Denver Grizzlies, senior vice president of business operations for the Colorado Rockies, and senior vice president of business for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He has also acted as the owner’s representative on major design and construction projects, including Coors Field and University of Denver’s award-winning athletic facilities.

Before and during his career in professional sports, Mullin spent several years in intercollegiate athletics and higher education. He served as vice chancellor of athletics for the University of Denver and as professor of sport management at the University of Massachusetts. Mullin holds a PhD in business, an MBA, and an MS in marketing from the University of Kansas, where he coached the varsity soccer program. He holds a BA in business studies from Coventry University in England, where he played soccer semiprofessionally for the Oxford City Football Club.

Stephen Hardy, PhD, was a professor of kinesiology and affiliate professor of history at the University of New Hampshire until his retirement in 2014. In 2003-2004, he served as interim vice provost for undergraduate studies. Hardy has also taught at the University of Massachusetts (where he earned his PhD), the University of Washington, Robert Morris College, and Carnegie Mellon University. Over three decades, he taught courses in sport marketing, athletic administration, and sport history as well as a popular introduction to the sport industry. Besides Sport Marketing, his publications include How Boston Played (1982, 2003) and numerous articles, book chapters, and reviews in academic presses. He is completing a coauthored history of ice hockey. His reviews and opinions have appeared in popular outlets such as the Boston Globe, New York Times, and Sports Business Journal. From 1995 to 1999, he was coeditor of Sport Marketing Quarterly. In 1997, he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. He has won college and university awards for excellence in research and teaching. Hardy has extensive experience in college athletics. He played hockey for Bowdoin College in the late 1960s and cocaptained the 1969-70 team with his twin brother, Earl. After coaching stints at Vermont Academy and Amherst College, he joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 1976, where he served as assistant commissioner and hockey supervisor until 1979. During that time, he supervised collegiate championships in venues such as the Boston Garden and Madison Square Garden, and he worked closely with the NCAA Ice Hockey Committee and its affiliated championships. He served on the board of directors of the America East Athletic Conference from 2000 to 2002. In 2003, he was selected by the Hockey East Association as one of 20 special friends to celebrate the league’s 20th anniversary. At UNH he served as faculty representative to the NCAA and chaired the president’s Athletics Advisory Committee from 1996 to 2011. He is a founder of the Charles E. Holt Archives of American Hockey, which are located at UNH’s Dimond Library. He lives with his wife, Donna, in Durham, New Hampshire.

William A. Sutton, EdD, is the founding director and professor at the sport and entertainment business management graduate program in the management department at the University of South Florida. He is the founder and principal of Bill Sutton & Associates, a consulting firm specializing in strategic marketing and revenue enhancement. Sutton has gained national recognition for his ability to meld practical experience in professional sports with academic analysis and interpretation.

His consulting clients cover a who’s who of professional athletics: the NBA, WNBA, NHL, Orlando Magic, Phoenix Suns, MSG Sports, and New York Mets. Sutton frequently serves as an expert on the sport business industry. His insights and commentary have appeared in USA Today, New York Times, CNBC.com, Washington Times, Fox Business, Orlando Sentinel, South Florida Sun-Sentinel, Advertising Age, and Brand Week. On the international front, Sutton is a contributor to the Italian publications Basketball Gigante and FIBA Assist.

Sutton served as vice president of team marketing and business operations for the National Basketball Association. In addition to working at the NBA, Sutton was past president of the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), a founding member and past president of the Sport Marketing Association (SMA), president of the Southern Sport Management Association, a special events coordinator for the City of Pittsburgh, a YMCA director, vice president of information services for an international sport marketing firm, and commissioner of the Mid-Ohio Conference. He was inducted into the College of Education Hall of Fame at Oklahoma State University (2003) and as an inaugural member of the Robert Morris University Sport Management Hall of Fame (2006), and received lifetime achievement awards from the Southern Sport Management Association (2012) and the Sport Entertainment & Venues Tomorrow conference at the University of South Carolina. He lives with his wife, Shana, in Tampa and Clearwater Beach, Florida.

A Reminder to Love Yourself and Understand Human Nature

I read a book almost every week, but this is my first book review. I felt that if my review were the reason any woman (or man), who might otherwise be put off from buying this book by the Cosmo-esque title, actually went ahead and bought it and changed their relationships and lives for the better, well then the benefit (improved lives) would have vastly outweighed the cost (the 15 minutes I spent writing this that I could have spent working, eating, conversating). Ergo, my review.

First, the most important thing to recognize is that this book is not for every woman (or man). If you meet some of the following (related) criteria:
1) Your parents had a loving, respectful, stable, reasonably equal partnership or you were otherwise exposed to such partnership
2) You have high self-esteem and consider yourself secure, inside or outside of relationships
3) You are already in a successful relationship or don't tend to have much trouble in relationships
...then you've probably already internalized the essence of the book. You don't need it. At best, employing its strategies would be redundant, at worst, disingenuous.

Onto those to whom the book is intended, and who would most benefit, in addition to those who do not meet the criteria above:
1) You've gone on a few dates with the guy, and you thought things were going well, and he started to slowly fade out or suddenly disappeared.
2) You've been dating a guy for a while, but he doesn't want to commit.
3) You're in a relationship, and your boyfriend was so sweet in the beginning, and he slowly or suddenly stopped. You feel taken for granted.

It's like the clouds opened up and God slapped some common sense into me. Somewhere between my parents' divorce, my mom's emotional unavailability, The Notebook (the book AND the movie), memes about "love is hard work" and "love conquers all", in the name of finding the love I so desperately wanted and needed, I had not only forgotten about number one (myself!), but I had forgotten some very basic tenets of human nature.

In a nutshell:

1) Above all, love yourself and love your life. Fill it with people who matter. Fill it with passions and interests. Fill it with memorable experiences. Constantly seek to be challenged and learn and fail and grow.

2) When a man enters your life, don't over-invest your time or your mental real estate. Make him a part of your life, just like every other part. Don't lose your rhythm. Especially if he is not chasing after you, but EVEN IF HE IS. Human nature reminder: People are myopic - they see the fun in seeing you all the time, but not the disinterest and contempt that such continual contact will breed. You have to keep the balance. If you fail to balance his part in your life, you lose your rhythm, you lose track of what it is that fulfills you - and you start to seek it from him. You become needy.

3) If at some point, you have not followed 2), you've showed him that you need him, and it will follow that he will become complacent. He'll be less affectionate, stop taking you out, etc. etc. Human nature reminder: People are pragmatic and somewhat lazy - if they can do less or more, and still get the same result, they will do less. Always. Maybe you'll try to talk to him or start to nag him. But he's putting less effort, you're still around and you still care (because you're nagging him), he has no incentive to change. People don't listen to words, they listen to action. So if he's not treating you right, stop putting yourself in a position to be treated not right. Stop showing affection. Stop contacting him. Stop being available and accepting last-minute invites to the guys' house.

I suppose I can see how people might perceive this as "game playing" or being inauthentic. Because really, you like or love the guy, you want to hug and kiss him and offer him backrubs, even when he's not treating you right. In your head (as was in my head), if you were the perfect girlfriend, if you did everything you could, maybe he'd see it and turn himself around. So in a way, to withhold affection or to say "no, sorry, I'm busy" when you're not actually busy is inauthentic. But only at first. I promise, after that, it becomes easier. Because slowly, you are empowering yourself. You are saying that you love yourself enough to do the thing you don't want to in the moment (to say no) to gain the thing you deserve long-term (to be treated with love and respect). And then it's easy, and it's real.

It's like telling you to do this

Extremely negative book. I didn't get to finish. Actually the author see the relationship from the surface, rather than seeing it through why women are doing those things. It's not from a holistic perspective, but a narrow personal view. It's kind of depressing to read. It's like telling you to do this, don't do that. It's hard. You know those rules, but if you really live on them, you're not being yourself. If women having difficulties dealing with relationship, then it's more important to look into self and learn to self love. Grow from it rather than following these rules. The author is saying how the women magazines give so many bad advices on relationship. But he's doing the same thing, while he just think his opinion is "right".
Wish could return the book and get refund. Waste of money. I would really like to see something that's enpowering and positive

Initially, with sporadic fighting between different parties for the control of N'Djamena, the Chadian capital, this conflict eventually turned into a major war when Libya invaded the country outright. The LAAF deployed not only French-made Mirage but also Soviet-made fighter-bombers of MiG and Sukhoi design, Mil-designed helicopters and even bombers of Tupolev design, to establish her dominance over the extensive battlefield of the Sahara Desert.

Because of the Cold War but also due to confrontation with Libya over a number of other issues, France - a one-time major arms supplier to Libya - and the USA gradually got dragged into the war. Deployments of their troops and intelligence services in Chad, Egypt and the Sudan never resulted in a full-scale war against Libya, but time and again culminated in small-scale aerial operations that proved crucial to developments on the ground, several of which are still a matter of extensive debate.

Detailing not only the aerial operations but the ground war and the geopolitical background of these conflicts, and illustrated with over 100 contemporary photographs, maps and all-new color profiles, this volume provides a unique insight into an otherwise completely forgotten conflict that raged from the skies over the southern Mediterranean to southern Chad and northern Sudan, yet one that not only represented a formative period of the LAAF, but which also prompted a number of crucial modifications and developments in France and the USA.

About the Author
Born in 1970, Tom Cooper is a native of Vienna, Austria. His travels in Europe and the Middle East have enabled him to establish excellent contacts with many informed sources in Iran, whose experiences can be found in his books and articles. An early fascination with military aviation post-World War 2 has narrowed down to an interest in smaller air forces and conflicts, particularly the Arab and the Iranian air force and the Iraq-Iran war, about which his researches date from the late 1980s.

Libyan air wars volume 1, Very well written book covering this part in history from the French in chad to the American navy off the coast of Libyan. Many pictures and line drawing help this book along the way. Easy to follow and understand book also shows the different countries that trained the pilots of this air force some of the countries did not do a good job according to the Libyan air force which the book tales about. Can’t wait for the next addition to arrive if like this volume well worth the wait. Still waiting for next volume

Needs an English editor

I enjoy the subject matter of this book and the information gathered and presented within it is excellent. However, similar to Tom Cooper's other titles, the composition and grammar is really lacking. If it wasn't for my interest in the subject, I would have put it down almost immediately. That's exactly what happened when I handed the book to my wife, who is a professional writer, and asked her to critique the first two paragraphs of the first chapter. She couldn't get past the first paragraph. I understand Mr. Cooper is Austrian, so, if I had to guess, English is not his primary language. I think it would be highly beneficial for him to hire a good editor that can improve and finesse the composition and presentation of his writing and make it more readable.

A Good Book For Young Children - a review of "The Story of Thanksgiving"

My five year old daughter (and to some extent my 3 y.o. son) is ready for a more advanced book than this one, but before we move on I thought I would say something about this sturdy little book that has been our foundation in Thanksgiving Day preparations for the last four years.

"The Story of Thanksgiving" begins with a question about why we celebrate Thanksgiving. It then goes on to depict how the pilgrims left England to come to America. It shows pictures of sad Pilgrims boarding the Mayflower, followed by a rough ocean (at least by toddler standards) and then the thankful travelers arriving at Plymouth. (They are thankful to be on land again-LOL)

After that the Pilgrims are shown briefly struggling with snow and cold, followed by a more cheerful picture of them planting. With Squanto's arrival they learn new things about the new land of America. Squanto shows them how to plant pumpkins, corn, and squash. And the book ends with a picture of Native Americans and Pilgrims at their feast; followed by a modern family at their feast.

"Thank you, God, for our families, our food, and our homes" the author writes.

Five Stars. A sturdy little book with child friendly artwork. The text is simple and easily understandable without needing many explanations from mom or dad. The religious aspects can be emphasized or not.

The Pilgrims lived in England.

They could not have their own church,

so they left their homes for a new land far away.

Nice clear pictures, short, simple, interesting story with appropriate emphasis on God's role in the pilgrim's lives (without being a "religious" book). My favorite thanksgiving book for little kids.
