Disappointed

I loved her last book, Lets Pretend This Never Happened, so I was excited to find there was a new one out! Unfortunately I think she really dropped the ball here. The writing was repetitive 'victor yelled this so I yelled that then victor yelled this and I said something ridiculous and victor walked out of the room'. It was over the top, trying too hard. I really really wanted to like it, I did. It was just too much drama, too over the top, too much yelling. It was difficult to read. I highly recommend her last book, but this one was a bit of a train wreck.

I wanted to like this book; I really did. I loved the author's first book. It is rare that I don't finish a book, but I just couldn't make it through the Australia trip in this one. Lawson's humor, fresh and witty in her first book, becomes annoyingly stale in this one. She blathers on and on about the most ridiculous things that no one would believe or even fathom, so it fails to be funny. Telling me every thought you think isn't funny; some things are better left unsaid. Then to expand on those thoughts like a runaway train is where the book fails over and over again.
I was hoping this book would be about her mental illness- as promised. She did mention it a few times, but overall it was a glorification of her wild and wacky mind and her outrageous and always over-the-top adventures (unbelievable and mind numbing at the same time).
I will not be reading any more of her future work.

Funny look at lifing with mental health issues.

I read this book in an effort to better understand living with mental disorders from a first person perspective. I found it very useful for that purpose. The language would be disturbing to many as it did get a little outrageous at times, but it did seem to represent true thoughts and attitudes. While it is doubtful that one can realize complete empathy and understanding, the book has helped my understanding of issues that I found completely incomprehensible before. In addition, the stories were riotously funny. It was an entertaining way to better understand individuals I care about. After reading this book, I found that I am interested in her first book and also those of some of her friends she described in the book.
