When it became clear that they would miss the pole, Nansen and companion Hjalmar Johansen struck off by themselves. Racing the shrinking pack-ice, they attempted, by dog-sled, to go "farthest north." They survived a winter in a moss hut eating walruses and polar bears, and the public assumed they were dead. In the spring of 1896, after three years of trekking, and having made it to within four degrees of the pole, they returned to safety. Nansen's narrative stands with the best writing on polar exploration. 20 b/w photographs.

About the Author
Fridtjof Nansen made early contributions to neuron doctrine and was the discoverer of "dead water." He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1922 for his work as a high commissioner of the League of Nations.

Epic adventure, Epic read....

This is a long and hard read, with almost day by day coverage of nearly five years out on the Arctic ice.
But the fact that this is a true story of Nansen's incredible Arctic expedition keeps you going. No one could dream up this adventure.
Also, the realistic portrayal of life on the Arctic ice let's you experience an environment few will ever get to visit in real life.
A very long and arduous read, only for seasoned adventure readers. But if you take on the challenge, you will be well rewarded.

Farthest North: The Epic Adventure of a Visionary Explorer
For someone like me who loves tales of early polar exploration and adventure, it's a 'must read.' It's about 700 pages of Nansen's day-by-day diary of three years drifing near the North Pole. Many probably would find it incredibly boring. If survival among the polar bears, walrus' and -40F ice turn you on. . .it's a wonderful fireside read for you!

A satisfying read, filled with suspense. Will they survive? How far north can they travel? Amazing feat of daring and determination in an age of almost primitive knowledge and limited technology.
