The book is intended as a textbook providing a deliberately simple introduction to finite element methods in a way that should be readily understandable to engineers, both students and practicing professionals.

Only the very simplest elements are considered, mainly two-dimensional three-noded "constant strain triangles," with simple linear variation of the relevant variables.

Chapters of the book deal with structural problems (beams), classification of a broad range of engineering into harmonic and biharmonic types, finite element analysis of harmonic problems, finite element analysis of biharmonic problems (plane stress and plane strain). Full FORTRAN programs are listed and explained in detail, and a range of practical problems solved in the text. Despite being somewhat unfashionable for general programming purposes, the FORTRAN language remains very widely used in engineering. The programs listed, which were originally developed for use on mainframe computers, have been thoroughly updated for use on desktops and laptops. Unlike the first edition, the new edtion has Problems (with Solutions) at the end of each chapter.

About the Author
Robert P. Murphy earned his Ph.D. in economics from New York University . A former professor at Hillsdale College , he is now an adjunct scholar with the Ludwig von Mises Institute and an analyst at Laffer Associates. He has worked as both an economics scholar and lecturer, as an investment/business analyst, and as a writer of popular journalism on economic topics. He lives with his wife and son in Nashville , Tennessee .

A fine analysis and defense of capitalism

Dr. Murphy valiantly crushes prevalent anti-capitalist myths, misunderstandings, and lies in this book. He also explains and defends capitalism, showing how-among other things-capitalism actually defeats things such as slavery, pollution, and racism, even though common accusations against the unregulated free-market are that it allows-even engenders-such things. Dr. Murphy also shows how when the government tries to take the place of private individuals and businesses, it operates without market incentives, is free from the punishment that bad economic choices incur on businessmen in the free market, and often fails miserably. There are also some valuable insights into major historical economic crises and issues, such as an analysis of the Great Depression and the New Deal that shows the absurdity of some of the views the Hoover and Roosevelt administrations had on economics. This is a great book that I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about economics and the free market.

Excellent Overview

Excellent overview of the capitalism/socialism argument. Has lot of good points one can use in a disagreement. I would like to have seen more of the foundation of capitalism in the Bible, for that is more where the argument lies than in just economic theory. People do not realize that the main thrust of socialism is a religious one, and that is what give it so much impetus.

The whole series is great and more information that most would get in school, both High school and college. I was already a fan of subject matter, and after this book I knew even more about it and the history of capitalism and the hidden gems of its application that are usually not covered in the history books or by the news.
If you want the TRUE history and lessons on capitalism or even if you think that capitalism is evil, read this book and learn what actually happens and how it actually works!

Excellent analysis of the methodology behind totalitarian regimes, with emphasis on the persecution of Jews. Personally the most redeeming part I found in this book was Timerman's personal methods to cope with the traumatic torture, and, most applicable to myself, an existence without tenderness and love. His words ring loud and true, his advice is sound, sound, sound.

I won't give a synopsis of the book b/c everyone else has already done that for you. What I can say about this book is that it is an impetus. After you read it, you'll most likely be hungry for more information about this brutal time in a seemingly well-developed country. Questions to consider: Why the silence of the press, with the exception of Timerman's newspaper 'La Opinion' and the 'B.A. Herald?' How could someone treated so horribly come out of it okay? Why did this happen after Pinochet's regime and the Nazi regime? This is post WWII, so why? Where was the rest of the world? The book is splendid, the first chapter gut-wrenching and beautiful. You will love it as much as Elie Wiesel's 'Night.'

Excellent analysis of the totalitarian mindset

Jacobo Timerman has written a gripping and terrifying account of his experiences at the mercy of Argentina's Peronist regime of the late 70's. A well respected, professional journalist in Buenos Aires, he was editor of the major newspaper La Opinión until he was kidnapped by the military for publishing articles critical of their terrorist tactics. He details how as a political prisoner, and more signifigantly as a Jew, he was held and tortured by a military carried away by their own delusions and rationalizations of violence - and by their virulent anti-semitism. Timerman displays a penetrating insight into the mindset of his captors and of a society that tried to ignore what was happening. A must read.

Richard M Reese

Richard M Reese has worked in both industry and academics. For 17 years, he worked in the telephone and aerospace industries, serving in several capacities, including research and development, software development, supervision, and training. He currently teaches at Tarleton State University, where he has the opportunity to draw on his years of industry experience to enhance his teaching. Richard has written several Java books and a C pointer book. He uses a concise and easy-to-follow approach to the topics at hand. His Java books have addressed EJB 3.1, updates to Java 7 and 8, certification, jMonkeyEngine, and Natural Language Processing.

Lots of useful information but also lots of typos

I've been reading the Safari Online version of this book and it contains a lot of useful information. I would have given the book 4 stars but for the fact that the book has many, many typos, which is not good for a technical book. There are minor mistakes like misspellings and not matching the plurality of subjects and verbs, but there are also more important mistakes, such as errors in the code examples in the book and in the specifications of classes and interfaces. For example, in Chapter 2, where functional interfaces are discussed, the book says that the functional method in the BinaryOperator interface has return type R, when it should have said T. Similarly, the book says that the getAsInt( ) method in the IntSupplier interface has return type R, when it should have said int. This book was not sufficiently proofread before publication.

About the Author
Boaventura de Sousa Santos is Professor of Sociology at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) and Distinguished Legal Scholar at the University of Wisconsin Madison. He is director of the Center for Social Studies at the University of Coimbra and has written and published widely on the issues of globalization, sociology of law and the state, epistemology, social movements, and the World Social Forum. He has been awarded several prizes, most recently the Science and Technology Prize of Mexico, 2010, and the Kalven Jr. Prize of the Law and Society Association, 2011. Among his many books in English are The Rise of the Global Left: The World Social Forum and Beyond (Zed Books 2006) and Law and Globalization from Below: Towards a Cosmopolitan Legality (co-editor; Cambridge University Press 2005).

Delightful & Inspiring

I got my copy of Lighter As We Go at noon and read straight through all afternoon. Greenstein and Holland are a terrific team. They’ve woven a wonderful blend of personal stories and fascinating research. The word that comes to mind is wisdom. For all the silly people who think they have to lie about their age, this is a great book, and for all the people who are happy to tell their age, this is a great book as well. The perfect birthday present. The book is as delightful as the cover!

Growing Older Without Getting Old

Much has been written about lately regarding how to stay youthful looking, acting and feeling, no matter how many candles you blow out on your birthday cake. While I'm all for staying as active and engaged as possible as I age, I'm more interested in learning how to accept with grace and good humor the fact that I'm growing older, without getting old, and to live each day of my life with gratitude and joy—all the way to the very end of my life. This small volume is interesting, easy to read and filled with heartwarming stories and solid advice and wisdom about how to remain young-at-heart while growing older, in spite of the challenges. I am sure I'll reach for it again and again in the future when I feel I need an attitude adjustment about frustrations related to aging. I do wonder, though, why the publisher decided to put the type in such a small font size when the targeted readership are into their 70s, 80s and 90s!

Not worth your money

When I bought this book I thought I would be getting a lot of great tips to apply to my classroom... oh what a dissapointment! Really, this book is sooo complicated that if you already know NLP, I think you will find more techniques and examples (which the book does not have) in your head and in your heart.
I would rather highly recommend: "How to talk so kids can learn". This book although it doesn't explicitly talk about NLP and how to apply it, it does use NLP and it has lots of examples I am sure you will like!.
Save your money. Do not buy this book, in fact I wouldn't give it one star...

Though 12th-century mystic Hildegard of Bingen began receiving visions at the extraordinarily young age of five, she was in her early 40s before she revealed them to the public in her writings, artwork and music. Not so for Idaho-born Akiane, a media star who, at the age of 10, confidently reveals her divinely inspired artwork and poetry to the wider world. The book is divided into three parts, the first section being the story of Akiane's life and her visions (which first began at the age of four) as told by her mother—a kind of hagiography of sorts. It's well meaning, but generally stilted and flat in its prose. Most interesting are parts two and three, the second section devoted to full color depictions of Akiane's paintings (vivid, fantasy-like portraits in color and scene), and the third a selection of her poetry. Even more interesting—yet unfortunately left unexplored in any real depth—is the question of how to understand Akiane in the context of Christian spirituality. Is she a mystic? Akiane Kramarik is a ten-year-old internationally renowned artist and poet. She created her first drawing at age four and at the age of eight sold her first painting for $10,000. Akiane speaks four languages and wants to use her God-given talent to raise money to help needy children all over the world. She lives in Idaho with her parents, three brothers, and a big-hearted golden retriever.

An amazing artist!

Akiane Kramarik has captured my coworkers and myself at our bookstore from the first moment we saw her book. The imagery is stunning and quite evocative. She is clearly mystically inclined and is hard to understand at times. Her mother's story of her young life, from birth to eleven years old, is compelling, even if not very professional. She's a mom and not a professional writer after all. The poems are breathtaking and profound, taking several readings to begin to "get" them. Though I suspect that if Akiane has gotten these from God, then they may not be "gotten" until we share her heavenly perspective. It seems that she is a prophet of sorts. We'll have to await what comes to pass in the coming years to see if she is really of God or not. One thing is for certain however, and that is her talent. Whether it's her painting, sketching, or poetry, it's no overstatement to call her a genius. I just hope she can stay humble in such an environment. I look forward to what her future will bring to us!

This is a great thing to see. We are seeing someone who is born with this talent and we get to see her progress with this. I think people get caught up in the "Christian" aspect of it and seem to be negative about her.

What is she? She's an 11 year old who paints what she sees in her mind. Does it matter if it not stylized as people think it should be? Again, when you hear this artist talk, she paints her dreams and what she sees in her mind. I think that's true of a lot of artists.

And for the people who are negative about her, it has drawn their attention too.

Is this artist looking to be taken seriously in the "art world?" It does not seem that way. This artist is painting what she wants to paint and seems to love it.

Children, even those called "prodigies", have something to teach us and we put them off because they're "just kids."

I love this and take it for what it is.

Especially good coverage on instruction flow and branch prediction

As with most Computer Architecture books, this book covers a wide range of topics in superscalar out-of-order processor design. But what made this book stand out is a chapter dedicated to discussing advanced instruction flow techniques. The book had a very thorough review of many branch prediction algorithm, various types of target predictors as well as high bandwidth fetching mechanism. The book also has a very thorough coverage on the P6 micro-architecture.
