The Stinky Cheese Man deconstructs not only the tradition of the fairy tale but also the entire notion of a book. Our naughty narrator, Jack, makes a mockery of the title page, the table of contents, and even the endpaper by shuffling, scoffing, and generally paying no mind to structure. Characters slide in and out of tales; Cinderella rebuffs Rumpelstiltskin, and the Giant at the top of the beanstalk snacks on the Little Red Hen. Grade-school irreverence abounds in this compendium of (extremely brief) fractured fairy tales, which might well be subtitled "All Things Gross and Giddy." With a relentless application of the sarcasm that tickled readers of The True Story of the Three Little Pigs , Scieszka and Smith skewer a host of juvenile favorites: Little Red Running Shorts beats the wolf to grandmother's house; the Really Ugly Duckling matures into a Really Ugly Duck; Cinderumpelstiltskin is "a girl who really blew it." Text and art work together for maximum comic impact--varying styles and sizes of type add to the illustrations' chaos, as when Chicken Licken discovers that the Table of Contents, and not the sky, is falling. Smith's art, in fact, expands upon his previous waggery to include increased interplay between characters, and even more of his intricate detail work. The collaborators' hijinks are evident in every aspect of the book, from endpapers to copyright notice. However, the zaniness and deadpan delivery that have distinguished their previous work may strike some as overdone here. This book's tone is often frenzied; its rather specialized humor, delivered with the rapid-fire pacing of a string of one-liners, at times seems almost mean-spirited. Ages 5-up.

Grade 2-6-- Scieszka and Smith, the daring duo responsible for revealing The True Story of the Three Little Pigs (Viking, 1989), return here with nine new exposes, all narrated by the ubiquitous Jack (of Beanstalk fame). Unlike the detailed retelling of the pigs' tale, most of these stories are shortened, one-joke versions that often trade their traditional morals for hilarity. ``The Stinky Cheese Man'' is an odoriferous cousin to the gingerbread boy; when he runs away, nobody wants to run after him. ``The Other Frog Prince'' wheedles a kiss only to reveal that he is just a tricky frog (as the princess wipes the frog slime off her lips); the Little Red Hen wanders frantically in and out of the book squawking about her wheat, her bread, her story, until she is finally (and permanently) squelched by Jack's giant. The broad satire extends even to book design, with a blurb that proclaims ``NEW! IMPROVED! FUNNY! GOOD! BUY! NOW!'' and a skewed table of contents crashing down on Chicken Licken and company several pages after they proclaim that the sky is falling. The illustrations are similar in style and mood to those in the earlier book, with the addition of more abstraction plus collage in some areas. The typeface, text size, and placement varies to become a vital part of the illustrations for some of the tales. My ultimate favorite-tist book ever

I remember this book being read to me in elementary school to this day. It has always been one of my absolute favorites (top 10). As cheesy as some of the stories are, its always fun to reread. I had a paper back copy that my parents got me sometime in my teenage years. When I was older in my twenties with children of my own, I still kept the book in my house. I read it to my toddlers several times even though they had no clue what I was reading (lol). One of my youngins decided one night that my book was better as a coloring book & I believe in fear of punishment of their artwork they decided to hide the evidence by tearing out several of the colored pages :(. My feelings were hurt & my spouse didn't really understand since it was just a book...Fast forward several years to my thirties my online shopping one day for my now preteen led me down memory lane. To my delight & pure joy a quick search revealed that I could fill a long void that I had (joking here). Nonetheless I snatched up a hard copy this time of my childhood favorite for a steal! Shipping was fast & before I knew it I was diving right back into the once corny fairly stupid tales that grabbed my attention so many years ago. The beauty of it all is my youngest child (a toddler), now swears that this is her ultimate favorite-tist ever book.

This is a delightfully stupid book!

I recall my teacher in grade school reading this to my class many, many years ago. I haven't thought about this book since then. After reading all the classics to my kid for bedtime, I got bored of what I was reading and wanted something...different. I reached back in my memory and pulled out The Stinky Cheese Man. It was everything I had remembered! The art is wonderful, I love the dark cartoony, with touches of realism pages. The book itself is dark humored, slapstick, stupid and a whole lotta AWESOME! My husband compares the humor to Monty Python (although I disagree, I don't care for M.P. but then again, I am a female) and he loves it too. I'm sure my kid would express his opinion, but he is not yet verbal :) Don't expect to get a moral or feel goody goodness out of this book. That is definitely NOT in this book, which I love. I'm a little tired of everything HAVING to be educational and have a point. Can't SOME things be pure entertainment? I think our kids need a little bit of stupid and a lot of humor in their lives to keep them from being dull. Love this book, picked up another by Jon Scieszka (The True Story of the 3 Little Pigs) and plan on getting more.

A Classic!

This picture book is timeless and never fails to entertain the reader. The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Student Tales contains classic folk tales retold with a very unique and hilarious spin. These tales include "The Stinky Cheese Man", "Chicken Licken", "The Really Ugly Duckling", "The Tortoise and the Hair", "Cinderumpelstiltskin", "Little Red Running Shorts", "Jack's Bean Problem", "The Princess and the Bowling Ball", and "The Other Frog Prince". All of these tales include the main characters from the original tale but altered in a comedic way to catch the reader's attention. Most of the stories include the classic "Once upon a time..." which will allow children to make connections with many stories they have seen or heard before, including Disney movies. All of the illustrations in the book are well drawn and complement the story perfectly.
This picture book is appropriate for most children as soon as they are able to read but also should not be taken too seriously. If you are going to use this in a school setting, make sure to remind students this book is not making fun of other stories, just providing an alternative storyline. Just to make sure that the students do not start making fun or harshly criticizing other's work. One of the best lesson plans that you can use this book with is exploring the idea of different points of view on a story or subject. You can simply provide the students with different versions of classic folktales and have them compare and contrast them. They can even rewrite the stories themselves and provide an alternative ending.
