Very in depth, but very dry reading. But, where else can you get this kind of information? If your trying to build any kind of machine or equipment, this series of books will show you mechanisms you never would have thought of on your own.

Dated and overly verbose and unexciting writing and illustrations

I have a rather complete collection of this type of books by many authors.
Many other series and individual books cover the same material but in ways which,
at least for my taste, are more interesting reads and reviews.
So this series of books just doesn't draw me to use it as review or reference information
as do some of the much more engagingly written books and series.
If other better competition did not exist, this would seem excellent.
